Death
Masami Eiri · 2018-05-08 09:24
So since I have never met anyone else irl that has also experienced this, I come here.
Has anyone else ever died in a dream and not woken up?
It has happened to me twice. Once when I was young. I had one of those dreams where you fall off a building. I used to get them a lot. But this time I did not wake up before I hit the ground. I hit and kept dreaming, floating up into the sky. It was only after I made it up pretty high that I woke up.
The second time I died in a dream I think reshaped who I was. I was in an all white room, strapped to a chair in one of the corners. A man broke down the door to the room and cut me down the middle with a chainsaw. I felt the chainsaw go in and down my head into my body. But I didn't wake up. I ended up at the opposite corner watching myself as the loop of the man breaking down the door and cutting me down with the chainsaw happened over, and over, and over again. I woke up feeling very cold and hollow. I cried. I don't know why but I just cried and felt so sad.

Are you sure the first dream wasn't influenced by Matrix or some other fiction where the protagonist falls off a building? The other dream could be mexican cartel beheading related.
William Holtzer · 2018-05-14 14:07
Sounds familiar, but I can't remember...
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2018-05-17 18:25
not me but when she was taking chantix my mom would have dreams about dying and being told that it's okay to go "to the light" by an angel.

falling off a high place is a quite common dream. I used to have them a lot when I was a kid.
The Oracle · 2018-05-18 23:51
Yeah, it's not uncommon for me but i've never met another person who it happens to. I've actually killed myself in dreams quite a few times. Usually it's more of a sacrifice thing than a straight up suicide, but I've also just shot myself before. Typically it just changes to a different dream like changing the channel, but I've also become a ghost and continued the dream, or just faded to black and continued on with a more abstract dream.

I have only dream that I was in a desert with someone suddenly the stranger sit down in the sand and I looked at him confused because of what he was doing I remembered him whispering to me "you hear that? is over" I look where the sound in the sky was coming from it was a line with a white trail passing right above us as soon as the object landed a big explosion ocurred and the debris of hot rock and flame hit me like a wall to the face
I have never seen a spacecraft in the sky when this happen it was terrifying when I saw elon musk's spacecraft in the sky being the white trail that I saw in that dream

This, I even get ones where I trip in a dream and wake up because of it.

Could there be some physiological reason for this? It's so common... maybe an inner ear thing?
Nell · 2018-05-30 17:55
Does anyone else have dreams in the third person?
I noticed that I'm never actually in my body in dreams. More like a camera following myself.

I had a weird one about a year ago. I was dreaming that I was laying in my bed bleeding profoundly from my chest and struggling to breathe. I was totally unable to move and I was staring at the ceiling with was beginning to fill with red lines like arteries. I think someone was present in the room, but I cannot recall. I remember realizing at some point that I had actually died in the dream, but I did not wake up into real life immediately. Instead I woke up while still inside my dream, in the same bed. But this time it was different; the whole room was very brightly lit and I could stand in my knees and look outside my window. I saw the same scenery of flats and balconies as when actually looking from my window, but this time there was a bright white light everywhere and every balcony was filled with white and purple flowers. I cannot exactly describe it, the feeling was simply magical, and it is one of the best dreams I have ever seen.

Yes, I did. I had a dream once in which the POV transitioned from first person to a wide general shoot while I was receiving a point blank shotgun to the chest.

I've died in a dream a few times, afterwhich I got the "vibrating" feeling of lucid dreaming. From then on the lucid part of my dream starts.
Eldon Tyrell · 2018-06-23 21:48
I rarely die in dreams, however I quite often keep falling forever. Endless pits reminiscent of fractal dives are a common theme for me. I am usually in terror of eventually hitting the ground or entering a even darker and less inhibited zone of the abyss, unable to reach the top ever again. At some point the dream is usually fading away into another scene or I stop dreaming and enter non-REM-sleep, if not waking up.
When actually dying, I feel a great relief. Well, it is hard to tell, whether you have died in a dream, if the pain and anxiety is just going on in the darkness or the great white of a nuclear flash. A simple switch into third person is also often the case, from where scenes switch more easily.
False awakenings may happen. Sometimes I even wake up in the room, where I actually went to bed. In any case death in dreams is a great entry point for lucidity.

Many of my dreams are from the "outside", unfolding like a movie or documentary, but often enough I go into a character and then again out of them, or my point of view is switching directly between people.
Nguoi La · 2019-05-13 18:28
I had a dream in which I fell from a one of those tall electrical towers and died. God (or some masculine deity) brought me back because no one cared enough about me for it to matter if I was alive or dead, so he saw no harm in doing me a favor. There might have been more to it than that but if there was I've since forgotten.
If this is something you're interested in I recommend the movie Enter the Void.
Nell · 2019-05-14 02:00
I never die in dreams - I pull the trigger and reincarnate, emerge as a ghost, or where I walk into the afterlife - death is never a termination.
Chan Siu Ming · 2019-05-20 16:20
A lot really, sometimes my dreams reset after i die, and i start from the beginning, sometimes i do the same thing that made me die and sometimes i do something different.
Sometimes i just go to other dream and sometimes and some times i change the perspective of the dream and see from other persons eyes.
Ironically, what never happened to me is waking up after dying on a dream.

In one dream someone had shot me and I died. Being "dead" was just being conscious without any senses, which would be damn terrifying if that's what it is really like. I remember being able to just think, couldn't breathe or see or anything else, then I woke up.
Tyrell Wellick · 2019-05-25 04:25
I often had this one dream where I was running from a monster, usually a dinosaur. He always gets me, but before that I see people I know being eaten.
These are are really thrilling and I enjoy them, always think after waking up what I should did to survive a little longer.
Malfunction · 2019-05-30 16:14
I have died many times but only one dream I remember for a long time. That was cold evening. Somebody talk with me, then for some reason I look at the stars and on the next second that man stab me with a knife. I fell on the ground and stare at knife handle sticking out of the sternum. Than I just pass out and look at myself as I was that man. My body bleed and my eyes was eerily glass.
Chan Siu Ming · 2019-06-16 08:03
Once, I died and became a ghost. I wandered around the area that I died messing around with people. Eventually I came across my dad, and he asked me where I wanted to be buried. In the dream, upper-class people would be buried in Europe to show that they were wealthy, so that's what he suggested first. At that point it hit me that I had died and my life was over. I told him that I would rather be buried in my home country, even if that wasn't as prestigious.
Crazy Jake · 2019-06-16 20:34

I had a really similar dream as a kid.
Me and a group of people got chased by dinosaurs.
Eventually I slipped near a cliff but I somehow caught myself. Then the dinosaur peeked over the edge and bit my head off. Then it would transition into a 3rd Person view of the group of people taking of the cliff with hang-gliders.

I probably dreamed a few times about death but I can sincerely only remember one of them. Basically I was at school (during class), and there was this group of guys basically bullying me. I didn't even even try to fight back (if my memory is correct) and the professor started screaming at me for disturbing the classroom. Then I basically had enough, stormed out of the class and jumped from the nearest stair. I fell in my back an then apparently I broke by neck and died almost instantaneously. After that I discovered that death was just the continuation of life. Ghost actually built many things with immortal bodies, however humans couldn't see them and the buildings. And we could still interact with the material world, however we chose generally not to.

I had a dream where I had been shopping with a deceased friend. We set out to leave the shopping center. I was riding in the passenger seat of their vehicle. After being cut off by another vehicle, we plummeted from the top story of a parking garage. I remember thinking to myself, "This is it. Stay focused, you are going to die now." I emerged from the wreckage fully convinced that my physical body had died. I was alone and the shopping center was vacant. I began to walk around, trying to stay very focused on my surroundings, thinking that this was the afterlife and I best keep alert less I slip into some sort of disorienting bardo realm. I encountered some other people inside of one of the retail stores, interacted with them, and as I began to notice some of them behaving as NPCs something just didn't feel right. I began to suspect that I was not dead but dreaming. At this point I went through a routine of reality testing that I sometimes do to validate a lucid dream state. I began to playfully investigate my surroundings but was still slightly unsure if I was dead or dreaming or if there was even a meaningful difference between the two states. I willed myself to wake up at that point. I was relieved to still be alive, yet slightly disappointed that my uncertainty had led me to abandon a lucid dream state. In any other dreams that I have had where in I was mortally wounded or dying, I have always instantly recognized that I was dreaming and either willed myself awake or just immediately engaged in lucid dreaming without hesitation or confusion. In retrospect, I now look at this dream as a dress rehearsal for the death of the body and I am thankful that I demonstrated to myself that I could keep my wits about me in such a circumstance.

if you talk about that feeling of hitting your mattress from the fall: it's called morus reflex and has setging to do with how the brain learns control of muscles iirc

I remember a dream where I got shot dead in my living room. Instead of "just dying" and waking up, I remember having difficulties of breathing and being stuck in my body. My "soul" was inside my ribcage, and the ribcage was hurting me. I remember lying there for a while before waking up.
Nguoi La · 2020-07-14 18:51
I was in the point of view from a soldier or something. I got shot. I only found out after I woke up feeling like a great amount of time has passed, because during this time I was unconscious. It's hard to describe it, it was nothing. An absence of all thought or feeling
Dozer · 2021-09-07 22:04
Once. I died in a helicopter crash with a girl in my arms. I became a disembodied awareness in infinite black, suddenly realized I was dead, and was filled with horror. Then I saw the TV news projected on the void. A smoldering helicopter on TV, reporting my death. I scream (internally. I have no body) and then wake up. I suddenly realize it was a dream, I'm alive. Thank God thank God thank God thank God
Incognito · 2021-09-08 02:15
Only happened once. It was quite an abstract dream so don't remember the exact details but I believe I was in a spaceship either trying to escape a planet being destroyed or trying to get away from a black hole or something. Either way I was too late and that whatever caught up with me, causing a colossal noise and then a sudden cut to just numb blackness. I want to say it felt vaguely cold and like I was fully paralyzed but I'm not entirely sure if there was any sense of physical feeling. I don't think I was capable of thinking anything at that moment either, but there was definitely a sense of time, which after waking up was probably the most intense part of it: the idea of being stuck dead in absolute nothing with no senses, but still being able to perceive and understand a passage of time (presumably eternity?). The dream didn't last very long after that as I think I was already half-awake at that point, but definitely long enough to register as a "death" and "being dead".

I've had this happen a few times. Most common ones are when I'm falling from a high place and hit the ground. I've had one where I woke up and felt physical pain.

Happened only once. Everything went to black and I felt a strange mix of nothing and anxiety. I guess my brain didn't know what a lack of sensation would really feel like, so it filled the blanks in.
Yet Another Lainon · 2022-09-12 00:22
I want to remember that I saw things go black and white (or just black) and that I also saw a rainbow. I mostly remember waking up and thinking "huh, I guess you really don't die in real life if you die in a dream".
John Titor · 2022-09-19 19:35
Yes, whenever I die time freezes and I feel like I'm dissolving into nothingness. Once I am on the brink of nonexistence I wake up.

I used to think that's what it was, although I wasn't sure to what degree I would keep my sentience. It's likely beings like this exist (look up Boltzmann Brains).

I had a dream where a tiger wrapped its jaws around my arm earlier. It happened during a really short nap but the dream was very vivid. I had accepted that I couldn't pull my arm out and that if I fought the tiger, it would just further maul me. So I just accepted it and sat there while it ripped my arm off at the shoulder.
I accepted that I was going to bleed out and woke up and now I feel different. It may have also reshaped who I was.

I once had a dream where I was attacked by a large, dark animal in the woods and died. Afterwards I was stuck in the dead body while it gnawed out my thoracic cavity, then for a long time the dream was simply lying there insensate while I rotted and bugs crawled over me.

Have fallen to my death and not wake up a few times myself actually. I usually just roll about like a ragdoll a second or two after hitting the ground and then stay like that. Can't feel my body once that happens. Takes me a good while to 'wake up' into a sleep paralysis afterwards.

Technician · 2026-06-27 20:24
I had a sleep paralysis once. My heart suddenly increased in rate for some reason, and I hallucinated it as me having heart attack (but not being able to move). I suddenly had the "realization" I was going to die. I couldn't move. My heart beat faster and faster and faster. I felt so bad for whoever my family who would have to find my dead body, but there was nothing I could do. I died. I felt my body float up and get pulled through some sort of firmament, and fell that pit in the stomach feeling you feel when you fall. I thought, for sure, I had just died, and that this is what the experience was like. I was scared to see what came after, since I hadn't thought about the afterlife much. I was also sad my life was over, it wasn't very significant or special. Anyways, next thing I knew, the pit stomach feeling of falling changed to a rollercoaster. I was on a rollercoaster, I pulled and pulled. And eventually, pulled myself out of sleep paralysis. I woke up. I was not dead. I sat for a few minutes, and got a glass of water. I didn't fall back asleep.
TLDR: Sleep paralysis made me think I died.

Yeah, once I died in a car crash in the dream, and then I was in some sort of golden-yellow room with a tunnel my mom, some other people, I didn't know some kind of religious people. They told me to be brave and cross to the other side. I mustered up my courage and walked into the tunnel and opened the door. Once I opened the door I immediately woke up. I still remember it, it's been more than a decade since that dream.
