feeling like bugs are crawling on me at night
Shogun · 2017-12-07 19:56
It's been happening for the past couple weeks. I'll be just about to fall asleep and suddenly there's bugs crawling all over me, especially in my ears. I'll turn on my lights in a panic and see nothing on me at all. No bites, no evidence of bugs.
I think this is some kind of hallucination but i don't know what could be brinding it on. It's been weeks since my last acid trip and I had no issues immediately after that, this is more recent. It's really interfering with my sleep.
Anyone have similar experiences, or know what's going on?

Probably just hypnagogic hallucinations. It's natural, it's your brain being already in half sleep mode but still being awake. At least you don't have exploding head syndrome

Even though I have a lot of experience with hypnagogic hallucinations and have never had a hallu of that sort (mines are all very much visual rather than sensorial), it does indeed very much seem like that's what you are experiencing. Do you have a kind of time or delay during which you find yourself unable to move before being able to get up and turn the lights on? Or do you still feel in full control of your body when it happens.
Also try to think about anything you might have changed recently about your sleep habits or that could have affected your sleep hygiena.

not really.

nothing really. I go to bed and get up at the same times I have for the past three months.

My guess would be it isn't hypnagogia/hypnopompia related then. When you get them how much in control of your thoughts and rational mind do you feel you are?
By this I mean could you try to stay in bed and think eh it's the usual hallucination thing but I know there is no actual bugs and ignore it. Or you just can't help but be convinced there are bugs? Do you also just feel the bugs, see them, or both.
Are you an anxious person or prone to anxiety disorders too? I know for a lot of people anxiety can manifest weirdly when in bed and trying to sleep.
My personal experiences as far as I'm concerned are all very easy to identify as hypnagogic because of body paralysis and never being in control of my thoughts. No matter how much I read on it and understand what it is, whenever it happens and say I can see a silouhete slowly crawling on the bed and then onto me, I'll still experience massive panic and anxiety and be convinced it's real until it passes and I get what's going on.
Do you also ever feel it coming sometime? Like a few seconds before the bugs show up. I've had some weird sense that I was about to get to that inbetween hypnagogic state right before I actually do and lose my ability to think clearly.
Anyway as I said I don't think it's hypnagogic from what you say.

>When you get them how much in control of your thoughts and rational mind do you feel you are?
I feel like I can think rationally but I always get up to check anyway. I don't want to be some dumbass who gets bitten by bugs and denies it.
>Are you an anxious person or prone to anxiety disorders too?
Yes. Definitely. It can sometimes manifest as paranoia.

Yes. Almost always.

Overstimulation of your nervous system maybe. If you're smoking weed daily for a long time it can happen.

Aw soykaf I get this too sometimes, I was convinced I had bedbugs for a while but it seems like it's just my brain. After a while I think my brain just learned to stop perceiving it as a threat and now it doesn't really stop me sleeping. Washing my sheets helped I think it might have been a psychological thing still but that might be worth a try.

This was one of the first symptoms my ex noticed before she was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Good luck.

Chill OP, it's nothing.
Probably.

went away a month or so ago btw.
Ironically after a high-dose acid trip that was very uncomfortable.
I think I just needed to get it out of my system.
