so ive been staying up at 4am playing town of salem and i admit there is a problem. I think its likely due to being a screen addict. What would be the appropriate steps to solve this issue and what are the side effects of sleeping late but sleeping in still getting those 8 hours

You need to start removing quick-fix temptations around 22:30. Set an alarm that reminds you to stop playing games, stop watching youtube, etc.
Start a podcast and turn off your screen.
You also need to install f.lux so your monitor isn't as bright as a lightbulb late at night.

There are programs like f.lux that let you only display warm colours on your screen, which don't have the same waking effect as cold colours.
If you're using windows 10 because you're scum, there's a built in app called night light.

I know some folks would disagree, but if you're still getting around 8 hours, this probably isn't a big deal.

I agree with >>747 If you're sleeping like that, and still getting stuff you need to get done, done while you're awake there isn't a real issue.
As >>274 and >>746 said get some thing that dims your screen. I use Redshift personally
I used to do much the same, I challenged my self on the decisions that led me to stay up so late, it was basically that I felt I was wasting time going to sleep and wouldn't get to do fun things.
