night hallucinations
Random · 2017-05-13 10:43
Anyone else here hallucinate at night, as in when awake and not sleeping? Im kind of active in my sleep so i sometimes wake up in the middle of the night.
Most of my experiences have involved things like having a red glowy spider floating in front of me or on the walls which disappears before i manage to light on it with my phone torch. Ive also had incidents where i got freaked out by seeing some kind of mix cat and monkey shadow creature climbing in through my window. Ever since that incident i always have my eyes closed if i wake up at night. Recently i didnt close my eyes when waking up and i think i saw a small spying thing fly out of my thinkpad. It looked like a black square with a red light in the middle of, typical thinkpad aesthetics. I got pretty pissed about how our privacy got undermined more and more and then realised it was just a hallucination and went back to sleep.
I talked with a therapist some time ago and he said its only schizo if it happens in the middle of the day.

Yes, I have a few times. Last time I remember I "woke up" to one of my acquintances shouting at my room's door about the apocalypse, I stood up and ran towards him and then he disappeared and then I woke up (for real) at my room's door.
Back when I was in grade school (9-11yo) I would have a nightmare that would repeat itself consistently for over 4 years (probably a lot to do with the irl situation at that time). This nightmare included my whole vision shifting aka everything suddenly going really far away, kind of like switching from 60 fov to 120 fov and then everything would suddenly come really close. While this is going on I would always run straight to my parents' room on the other side of the house, and here's the strange part: When I woke up from the nightmare and ran to my parents I would get the nightmare again whilst running there, usually when running past the kitchen and into a longer corridor. I think I remember me actually sometimes just crying on the kitchen floor because the dream was too intense. I still get this kind of vision or nightmare even when I'm not sleeping but when I'm under heavy social stress or just by myself in a stressful environment (or meditating in a dark livingroom).
If someone has any analysis on this I would be interested.

ive also had problems with waking and still dreaming. Had an accident where i got absolutely terrified of something and ran out of my house in my underwear in the middle of the night, scraped my toe against the pavement.

What is your sleep schedule like?
If its very uneven you might be suffering for it, I used to get hallucinations all the time when I was in the army from spending very long periods of time awake followed by short bursts of sleep and then a very long period of sleep after a few of those cycles
The thing with the creature flying out of your thinkpad sounds like the hallucinations I used to get after microsleeps, I would confuse objects in the environment for dangerous animals or things (snakes/mines) etc or confuse sounds like the wind with other things

I get something like this in the seconds after I wake up. Sometimes it's a spider, sometimes more like a tumbleweed. It's animated and then fades but it doesn't glow.

It's natural for the body try to combat viruses and bacterias while you are sleeping, so you might get fevers at night even if you feel okay while awake. That means your immune system is working fine. It's also normal to see things in the dark when your eyes are tired.

Since a few weeks ago when i'm really tired i get audible hallucinations of a womans voice whispering 'Hey... Hey...'.
The ''hey's'' are short in length and it really sounds like her mouth is right in your ear. It creeps the fuarrrk out of me. I checked multiple times if it were the neighbours having a conversation or if it was some static background noise with a pattern, with no results.
I think i'm slowly going schizophrenic Lains...

maybe you should get that checked out.

Try listening to the voice and write down what she says. Maybe she has something useful to say?
At the very least, if you do that, you'll have a log to show to a therapist.

often times at night I get minor visual distortions like you would coming up on a psychedelic, like carpets warping and stuff like that.

I hope this never happens to me. I had a scitzo episode when I was in middle school. It wasn't that bad though. I kept thinking I was getting gang-stalked, all It did was stress me out big time and affected my sleeping schedule.
Also when I was in elementary school I slept in the same room with my sister. I wake up in middle of the night and see a white orb floating above her head and when I get up all freaked out it swiftly moves away on one motion and escapes out of sight.

when I got really paranoid in the past I used to see open doors and old people smiling at me in peripheral vision, but since 4 years ago it stopped.

also, once when I was 9 I hallucinated while peeing in the toilet. I remember seeing a lot of paparazzi taking pictures of me peeing and I ran back to my mom telling her what happened but she didn't believe me.

I have a dream-awake state when I'm in the process of waking up, which includes mild lucidity. Fortunately I have not has any nightmares in this mode so far.
However, I've had some delusions at times that are reminiscent of when you are really high on weed and start knowing things which seconds later you discover are false. This happens only at night if I am very tired and not yet sleeping while sitting aimlessly in the kitchen, where I may even fear darkness again.

Sometimes when I'm walking around in a dark unpopulated region at night I'm gripped with a strong conviction that monsters will come get me. I can visualize them so clearly, but I never actually see them. I think if I didn't dismiss them I would actually see them.
Dozer · 2017-06-22 04:21
yeah actually. i often hallucinate seeing men under my bed, or crawling up from under it while im on it, or scratching at my door, or footsteps down the hall where there are none. sometimes i hear talking, but nothing is ever discernible, like hearing murmurs from several rooms over. also sometimes various bugs/spiders or shadow blob people.
Crash Override · 2017-06-23 22:44
Last year hallucinated twice in a month period that I had floated into the air and been tossed around like a ragdoll. Around that time I would also wake up and the furniture would be as in some other time of my life, and I'd panic to flip a light on but none of them would work; I'd go back into bed to hide under the blanket and then things would become as normal again.
Dox · 2017-07-07 02:16
When I fall asleep I remember one time I heard lots and pans and like, cafeteria sounds, I thought someone broke into my kitchen actually, then I realized I was just hallucinating

sounds to me like lilliputian hallucinations, or alice in wonderland syndrome
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Wonderland_syndrome
i get this occasionally due to my terrible sleep schedule, kinda fun once you recognize what it is. you see everything differently, but still see the exact same image. hallucinations like these give some insight into how your mind works too. I can induce this kind of hallucination by looking at piano keys, i think its due to the contrast in white/black.

That same thing with the orb happened to me.

yeah thats an onset of schizophrenia.
Unknown · 2017-09-18 08:03
I think its called Hypnagogic Hallucinations. For me, I would always see spiders dangling down right above my head. I would freak out and wake up getting out of bed. I have been trying to lucid dream but this seems to always stop me.
Mentat · 2017-09-18 13:58
man, i had another these accidents. woke up at 3am with a high heartbeat and paranoid as soykaf. hallucinated a robo bug on the wall which dissappeared as usual before i could illuminate it with my phone.
I also had another event where i woke up and made a run for it, thankfully i only got outside my room before i managed to calm myself down. Could have gone worse, once i ran outside my house in just my underwear and scraped my toe on the driveway.

I wouldnt listen to the people saying that is the onset of schizo, nothing degrades your sanity more than actively believing that you are losing your sanity. See a therapist, not because of this incident necessarily but because everyone should be trying to improve their mental health, nobody is perfect. I have similar stuff happen to me if im laying down for a nap but dont quite fall asleep, almost as though my dreams are beginning before I fall asleep. Often its people I know speaking to me or eachother, almost always a normal conversation. occasionally it will be someone (usually a woman) saying strange things, similar to the spoken parts of frank zappa's "lumpy gravy"
If it only happens when you are half-asleep I really wouldnt worry at all, but if it will help you then I strongly reccomend seeing a therapist

Thank god I thought I was the only one. I very often get visual distortions (like an LSD come up, carpets moving, walls breathing etc), auditory hallucinations (not as often, usually sounds like some unintelligible asmr whispering or sometimes someone whispering my name), and shapes moving out of the corner of my eye (look like small bugs or mice). I think it's related to my anxiety, I've heard that people can get these sorts of symptoms with anxiety. For a while I thought I was schizo because extreme paranoia + hallucinations is a pretty standard sign, but I think that's unlikely since no one in my family that I know of has had it and I am scared of the paranoia/delusions and I read that if you have them and you aren't scared that's when you should be worried. Also it happens only at night. Sometimes it just ends with me curling up under my covers thinking my room is being overtaken by ants or spiders, sometimes it's just kinda trippy distortions and it's actually quite nice.

I've experienced few small auditory hallucinations just before falling asleep or just after waking up. For example, one morning I woke up and for like a second I could still hear the conversation that I was having while dreaming. I wish I'd get these more often, since I know they're totally harmless.

I experience much the same, but almost only before falling asleep.
Conversations or noise snippets, sometimes from actual conversations I had a while ago or from media, sometimes complete fabrication (afaik).

>This nightmare included my whole vision shifting aka everything suddenly going really far away, kind of like switching from 60 fov to 120 fov and then everything would suddenly come really close.
fuarrrk, I had recurring nightmares where the same thing happened when I was a kid. I remember that the dreams were really intense and agonizing and they usually ended up with me getting out of bed and walking to another room while in some kind of psychosis or still half asleep or something, and it only ended after I laid down on the floor or sat against a wall. The funny thing is that iirc nothing ever really happened in those nightmares. There was just this extremely pressing feeling that everythings about to end or something.
I wonder it these kinds of nightmares are common

Yes, very very badly. It eventually started happening during the day.

a few years ago I was in the middle of some quite heavy (but mostly self inflicted) stress, and then topped it off by getting curious about astral projection.
I would wake up in the middle of the night with sleep paralysis and begin to hear funny sounds for example the sound a campfire makes when you pour water on it, or sounds like gongs, the sounds would go on for a little while but then they would get faster and louder and suddenly my head would start hurting like it was being compressed and shaken, and my body would feel like it was travelling at high speed.
It's mostly stopped except now I have normal dreams simulating this experience occasionally I guess because I remember it with such fear.

Mostly audible hallucinations of the thud of doors being opened or closed in a distance, sometimes the noise of my phone buzzing or people talking outside by the window. Paranoia is getting the worst of me.
User · 2022-01-06 13:42
As far as I'm concerned it actually is probably schizo. You better start taking the pills before your mind gets severely damaged.

I mean if you have it at day

I sometimes hear voices when I go to bed after vaping pot usually speaking a language I don't know.
Think they talked Russian or some other Eastern European language once.
I was also once convinced I saw scientists observing me behind the walls.
I chalk these things up to my brain not working properly around sleep or the effects of THC.
