Cyberpunk edgerunners
SHODAN · 2022-09-14 17:00
Edgerunners is the best /cyb/ anime to come out in the past 10 years. Fantastic story, great characters, and a fantastic ending. I'd love to hear everyone thoughts on it.
Rebecca best girl btw

I've only watched the first couple episodes but I absolutely agree with you. Almost all /cyb/ anime has been soykaf lately.
fuarrrkin trigger, man. I expect nothing but quality from them.

Not only is it better than the video game it's based on but it also feels more cyberpunk than it too. Not really the direction I'd want from modern cyberpunk but as a throwback to the classic stuff it's genuinely great. It's such a shame that 2077 and the new edition of the tabletop stank so much because this show makes me want to see more from this universe.

Overall, it's a very enjoyable series. Visually impressive, great action sequences, lovely sound design and fun characters. It's also very clear that the creators have a passion for the Cyberpunk setting, as it's been fully realized down to the most minor detail. I think my favourite thing about the show is its portrayal of cyberpsychosis, which is depicted as an insidious thing that creeps up on someone when they least expect it, causing them to lose their grip on reality and their attachment to whatever kept them human. Episode six is my favourite episode for this reason.
I think my biggest issue with the series is that, after episode six, I found myself losing interest in what was going on, only to regain that interest when Adam Smasher showed up. I also didn't care much for David and Lucy's relationship, which seemed to be the driving force of the narrative. I understand the dynamic and it definitely has its purpose, but I simply didn't find it compelling. Ironically, I felt that Maine and Dario had the stronger relationship, which makes what happened to them all the more tragic.
Beyond that, there's only minor nitpicks, like the overuse of music from Cyberpunk 2077 (they played "Major Crimes" and "I Really Want To Stay At Your House" multiple times throughout the series) and the lack of Night City's infamously bad weather (no acid rain, blood rain or dense smog). However, those minor things didn't hurt my enjoyment of the show.
I hope we get more at some point. Maybe another season with a new cast of characters. Only time will tell.
Also, yes, Rebecca is best girl. She's my favourite character, with Maine being a close second. May she rest in peace.

Are you serious? The show was enjoyable and for sure looked good, but most characters and their relationships were underdeveloped, the writing was far from 'fantastic'.

Because theres just nothing else.
The target audience for edgerunner is 12-14yearolds with no parent supervision. Its super dissapointing IMO.

>relationships were underdeveloped
I feel like that's just a consequence of the pacing. The fast pacing works really well imo, the point is to sell how fast the city moves and how small a part they are in it. David is just another kid off the street, and he will rise and fall just like a thousand other kids, and like those thousand other kids he's really of no consequence. Maine was once a kid off the street (or a nomad, maybe?) who rose up, then he died and David took his place. Once David dies another kid will replace him, and on and on it goes.
I would love to talk about the game, but due to the buggy launch you really can't any intelligent discussion about it's writing without people getting distracted. The amount of people that played the game and paid attention are few and far in between.

The pacing was methed the fuarrrk out. The city moves fast but not *that* fast, I feel. Their romance ironically became very idealized because of how fast the pacing was. A lot of viewers were willing to accept that they "just clicked". But that's just a stylistic choice, I guess. It would have been a different series if it included a slightly more Noir (Bladerunner?) pacing where targets are scoped, contacts reached out to, y'know, the stuff that keeps you from going into traps.

Also psycho pass is from 2012 and I would argue that irt is 1000 times more cyberpunk than this cancer but we all jerk off to hentai so lets pretend otherwise.
I'm not seeing this dry cumshot into this glorious genre I would rather be lectured by William "Retarded glitterboy" Gibson for a week straight just so I couldn't watch this ebola of visual media. fuarrrk you cd Indian red.

I feel like the focus isn't suppose to be on the relationship. This isn't really a love story, it's a tragedy. David/Lucy are just another way for the show to explore the main themes. David's problem is that he's holding the expectations that other's have placed on him, so much so that it ends up being his downfall. David feels that if he doesn't accomplish anything of value with his life then all the work that his mother/Maine/whoever else will have been wasted. Lucy is the opposite, she wants to run away from everyone, and she doesn't care for other people's opinions of her. She grew up a disposable toy of Arasaka, she got no love and has nothing to prove to anyone. In the end David keeps pushing himself to accomplish some 'dream' for Lucy, though that's really more of a surrogate for everyone else. David thinks of himself as 'special' because he needs to accomplish this goal to make the work everyone put into him worth it, but he's not special. He's another cog in the machine, a disposable street kid in over his head like a thousand others.

>David thinks of himself as 'special' because he needs to accomplish this goal to make the work everyone put into him worth it, but he's not special. He's another cog in the machine, a disposable street kid in over his head like a thousand others.
Ironically, I think his lack of awareness about his situation is what made him "special" in the first place. David didn't see himself as just another "cog in the machine", but as someone who was going to do great things. It's a silly dream, motivated in part by his youth and the expectations of his mother, but that dream, and his love for Lucy, gave him the strength and determination to just keep going. In a world as apathetic as Cyberpunk's, that means a lot. In a way, David reminds me of K from Blade Runner 2049.
However, you could put a fatalistic spin on it. David's determination and naiveté kept him blind to just how easy it would've been for him to die, and you begin to wonder if he even cared about death in the first place.
Had to delete the original post to make a correction.
Anamika · 2022-09-28 01:46
The ending had such a great tone. I like the idea of just wanting to escape the city, feel the sun, even if just for a moment... really drives home how much of a soul crushing hyper accelerated urban hellscape they live in.
For sure it didn't live up to the potential of some of the og cyberpunk works. Hopefully it opens the door for someone new to do something even more interesting.
In parts of it, kind of wonder if maybe Trigger understood the spirit of the subject matter more than CDPR did...

I really like how they used metal music with growls on some scenes. It's a breath of fresh air. Most people in charge would've gone with something more normal person friendly
Dr. X · 2022-09-28 17:03
Not gonna say anything new and stuff that's already been debating regarding pacing, ending and story but that adds up I guess.
>>9697 >>9699 you make good points. Fast pacing can be a choice, here I doubt it's anything but constraint to make it all in no more than 10 eps. Love the fast, would have even more so loved a show twice or thrice as long that let us spend more time with these lovable characters and the places they went to. We barely see their bars, their hqs, etc. And yes, that's part of why it gets us sad, because it's so short, and then it's gone, but still...
Found story a (big) tad cliché to be honest, not surprising for someone who read/watched a lot of the genre but still. Not that I minded that much, since I'm a sucker for it. Visually awesome, but very far from being the best cyb story of the decade. I still cried at the end, and even more so after reading a "good ending" fancomic where the 4 of them get saved
Nobody special · 2022-09-28 17:40

He's "not special" as in he doesn't really accomplish anything. All of his friends end up dying, except for Lucy. He could've gotten Lucy to the moon in much safer ways than he did. In the end, all of his friends are arguably worse off for having known him.
>>9703
What specifically about the game do you think lacks the spirit of the subject matter?
Void · 2022-10-03 18:43
I really didn't want to like this series. The Cyberpunk FPS made me think that the genre would be completely associated with that soy in the west for the next decade. Then I saw a fuarrrking Netflix anime coming out and nearly smashed my head through my desk. Yeah it's not so much "Blade Runner" noir but it definitely had Snow Crash written all over it and the main character arcs were good enough to stand on their own in any genre.
Shadowrun will always be cooler than 2077. Was a really good 1 season watch though. Maybe our expectations are just low these days but it's the only Netflix soykaf that has been any good.
>>9709
Yeah him being "special" was his fatal flaw in the end. Another anon above already said it but his suicidal desire to live up to the expectations of others is what got him and everyone he knew BTFO in the end. I love how they used Adam the way an annoyed DM would and just wiped the whole damn party.

Despite liking Lain and similar shows/films, I don't really care for the current "cyberpunk aesthetic" and how much it's been pushed in modern entertainment. I'm also a huge fan of most of the shows GAINAX has produced, but I've never actually watched a lot of Trigger stuff, besides like one episode of gridman. Space Patrol Luluco is on my backlog though, trying to finish that before Panty & Stocking 2 comes out.

But i'm loving post-cyberpunk most. I do not like this bright PURPLE AND RED AND LASERS LIKE WEEU WEEU, i like goddamn rain, hobos on hard drugs, where is not place to heroism, changing world or something else. Where all do not care about other.

I have yet to watch this show, but from what I've seen of it I have a feeling it's the type of thing I really hate. It seems like the type of show that will rely heavily on cliches, have dull worldbuilding, and rely on flashy gunfights instead of story. Let me know if any of these impressions are wrong.
Also, I really hated the game this show is based off of since it's just a normal shooting game but with a futuristic veneer and no real cyberpunk themes.

I finally watched this show. I must say that I liked the first half (technically not a half, since it's Ep 1 to 6, but you know what I mean, everything before the time skip) better. It became too over the top after the time skip for my taste. I especially enjoyed the very first episode, which focuses on social struggles of people living in this dystopian anarcho-capitalist society. The very first episode should be shown to kids in schools, so they know what kind of society awaits them if they give power to the insane people.
R.I.P. Gloria Martinez, the most relatable character

>It became too over the top after the time skip for my taste.
I think that's the same sentiment I have post-watch with my friend. He said he really hoped for a better ending which I have to agree partially. I know what the last episodes were trying to aim for and they exist just to end the show. I doubt they want to continue the series. It's unfortunate because they could have made a more compelling ending, but it could have left room for ideas of a continuation which is probably not what they want.
I really enjoyed the first couple episodes. They were like REALLY good, but the moment david chromed up, I feel like that's where the show kinda starts to fall apart. (Also wow david is a fuarrrkin idiot. "boohoo i got nothing left. doing this so she can have her dream". literally can't take cues. I'm still mad about that lmao)
Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but it still leaves a bitter sad taste.
>Gloria Martinez
For real. I would have loved to see what she does on the side for David. We can guess/learn quickly what she was doing, but still. She deserves more screen time

Finally, Trigger and Imaishi woke up. I've heard good things about BNA but apart from that, they didn't do much from 2016 to now. I'm glad they're dropping the old "Trigger style" and going for something that reminds me more of Dead Leaves, it's way better. And if that wasn't enough, the story is good, the characters are good, and Aoi Yuuki has a lead role.
There's a part that I'm not really sure about, which is mixing action and comedy all the time. The good part is that it adds to the instability of the world, and keeps you on your toes because the tone could suddenly shift at any moment. The bad parts are that switching from comedy to tragedy like that feels cheap, and I don't know if it's something they consciously did or if they're unable to make serious actions scenes for a whole season.
> best /cyb/ anime to come out in the past 10 years
I don't think you should use time like that when comparing stuff. The cyberpunk wave was pretty much dying/dead by 2010, and it's not like anime gets better and better every year. In fact, most of the time you're better off watching old stuff than trying your luck with what's airing since you have the insight.
>>9735
It is a Trigger show so don't expect an Oshii movie, but it's better than what they usually do. A good part is of course focused on the action, but there's also lots of time dedicated to exploring cyberpsychosis, both from the inside in how people experience it, and from the outside in how people end up being in a situation where they suffer from it.
Another thing that I liked is that they manage death well. Often stories focused on action in a violent/dark world like that will have people dropping like flies for shock value. I think they mostly avoided this here. I'd say try to watch one or two episodes and if you don't feel like watching the rest, drop it without regrets.
Morpheus · 2022-10-14 22:22
Anyone else find this really lame and boring? It's made me feel that I'm too old for anime. And I'm under 30.
Also the animation and backgrounds was noticably bad and inconsistent in many scenes. I'm not an animation snob at all that's just how egregious it was.
I don't get the hype so I sadly am now a contrarian I guess. I'm sure someone will dig up this lainchan post 10 years from now when edgerunners is the most glorified thing ever and laugh at me

Cyberpunk animes have been so bad that when a mediocre anime comes out with Cyberpunk thematic everybody thinks is a masterpiece. Is not.
The ambientation is great, the characters are clichés but have memorable designs. But the story is the same as a lot of other animes: A nobody who gets killed by his ambition.

I don't really think David and Lucy really *clicked*. There's a lot of miscommunication and even some toxicity that goes on between them which leaves Lucy worse off eventually. I wonder if their relationship would have lasted past David's short life span.
As for the tone of the series, I really do appreciate that the series was not just another neo-noir. It seems like too much cyberpunk anime went the way of crime procedurals that the more rebellious side of the genre is far and few between. A good middle ground would have been an extended version of Blade Runner: Blackout, but we got a middling 3D anime instead (Black Lotus.)

It wasn't bad, all in all pretty average, but It's one of the best portrayals of Mike Pondsmith's universe and arguably better than RED and 2077. 2077 had a decent main quest and a lot of cool smaller vignettes but whether it was due to flaws with the presentation or the story itself you kinda keep getting jerked out of it, maybe it's even just the scope of it all, whereas the show feels more polished.
