Modern media: Over-saturated colors

Hitomi · 2022-08-12 02:04
What the hell happened to the colors in the media? Why are these over-saturated colors everywhere? I hate that. Just look at any modern visual media (video-games, movies, anime, etc) and then compare it to older media of the same kind. You will find out that colors used to be much less saturated. The colors in media used to be much more realistic and natural, nowadays they all look like coloring books for children. I can't stand it, it hurts my eyes! I want my moderate colors back. Who likes these colors? Who is responsible for this?

I'm literally going to start a movement for desaturation of visual media!
Jean Dupont · 2022-08-12 02:25
>>9583 I don't mind it. Visual media can be used to portray a fantastical representation of reality. Saturated colours play into this idea, where everything is larger than life.

Maybe something to do with how screens progressed over the years?

>>9584 ITT: GenZ "people" who don't understand that over-saturated colors look ultra-ugly because they have been conditioned to like this nonsense since kindergarten

I distinctly remember how upset people were with the ugly gray desaturated look in the 2010s.

>what happened to colors in the media? They changed according to a trend. It is as meaningless as the shift away from bell bottoms. >Who is responsible for this? Probably the jews /s

At this rate I'm expecting total warhammer 4 to just be neon.

Higher saturation allows artists more room for contrast and detail. Look at the background of the picture of goku or whoever it is, the extra dynamic range that saturated values allow for let the artist draw the faces in the background with such contrast that they're still detailed even in this shrunken, lower resolution picture of the scene. For comparison, look at how poorly the table contrasts with the ground in the video game and how awful the bushes look. Higher saturation also makes for better viewing when projected instead of viewed through a screen. It may be ugly to your eyes, but it's pragmatic. You can always turn the saturation down in your video player or on your TV if it's too saturated for your tastes. I really don't see the big deal. I know that's naruto and not goku

>>9582 What kind of urban blob man are you that you've never been somewhere with bright green grass and strong sunshine? The real world isn't always grey, brown and dark green, vibrant colours are quite common in summer/bright sunlight in many parts of the world
XERXES · 2022-08-12 19:13
>>9595 No grass has this bright shade of green. It's actually much more dull shade of green, yes, even during a sunny summer noon. It is you who needs to go outside more apparently.
VAGROK · 2022-08-12 19:59
>>9596 Nope, grass is neon green. Manchildren world, manchildren site. Get used to it soykaf.

Immune response to CGI blockbusters filmed in grey cities on overcast days.

I imagine the reaction was similar, perhaps even more extreme, when audiences saw The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis for the first time. Imagine seeing mostly black and white films, some others with that grainy early colour, and then getting smacked in the frontal lobes with Technicolor.

>>9582 old monitors rendered colors washed down and smeared. New monitors don't. So on old monitors you drew extreme bright and got a medium result. Now people open source material on new monitor and think wow such colors and think its how its always been and should be done. quick first result example: https://tekdeeps.com/why-it-was-better-on-crt-tv/

OP used a really bad example, all 4 of those images are appealing to me, and I agree that high saturated colors in everything is hard on the eyes and not appealing at all.
Koichiro · 2022-12-05 15:21
>>9587 this. I had no idea what OP's point was supposed to be just from the image.

I don't know about anime, but in vidya I can tell you it's a backlash against all the brownanbloom that was commonplace beforehand. I guess oversaturation is better than being almost sepiatone, but I still hate the way people think in extremes and go "well (x) was a bad idea so let's start doing (polar opposite of x) instead". You see this line of thought everywhere. Politics, science, art, whatever.

I like it some things but others it just looks plastic and out of place. I'm not sure why this happened because they even dim scenes that they think may cause seizures when it airs on TV. I assume for animation this was the result of the switch from cell animation to digital. There maybe was problems in colouring getting digital colours right so they fully saturated them for consistency. For video games it likely is because of people playing in dimpy lit rooms with lowered screen brightness saying the images were too dark
ik3da · 2022-12-11 21:24
>>9991 That's an interesting way of looking at it.
