Cyberpunk Anime
Mario Rossi · 2022-05-06 11:22
I've just watched Ghost in the Shell (1995) and I think it is the best anime movie I've ever seen. I like the art style, the philosophical quiet scenes and the visceral fight scenes.
The question is, will we ever see something as great? With the epoch of cyberpunk anime long past (Cowboy Bebop, AKIRA, Serial Experiments Lain), is there even a small chance of the industry returning to this theme? I don't want to watch haha cute moe slice of life cartoons until I die.
Nemissa · 2022-05-06 19:31
Have you seen the GitS: Standalone Complex series, 52 episodes long I think? It's better than the full length animated movies by quite a stretch. It delves further into the theory and philosophy, and the characters and stories are way more fleshed out. I cried during the final episode.
The mangas are interesting but quite old by now. The live action adaptation with Scarlet Johansen is something I have never been tempted to watch.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2022-05-06 21:05
It's definitely rare these days. The only decent one I've seen from the last decade is No Guns Life.
Check out this list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/55
It might come back in vogue some day but who knows.

It was rare always. For every Lain, Akira, GitS or Planetes there are about 1000 other movies or series designed for emotionally stunted, ADHD ridden adultchildren.
Agent Smith · 2022-05-06 22:22
there's a pretty good cyberpunk anime I've been watching here and there called technolyze. it's about a futuristic world where there is a transhumanist agenda and a rebel force against it.

Texhnolyze is a cousin to SEL as it had some of the same people work on it. It is several shades darker though, to say the least.

Texhnolyze is great, one of my favorite shows. It's a little more structured than SEL, and it has a super nice bleak cyberpunk atmosphere and a lot of interesting characters and deep themes to think about.

Check out:
Bubblegum Crisis and its OVAs - if you want to see women pilot exosuits to fight androids.
Cyber City Oedo 808 - if you want to see prisoners being used by the system.
Appleseed - if you want to see cyborg class war.
Mardock Scramble - if you want to see a woman seek revenge against her attackers.

>Mardock Scramble
Was a bit disappointed in this one. Didn't appreciate nearly half the OVA series being used on an insipid gambling narrative, and I don't feel like it had a lot else to say. Dumb gambling narratives definitely aren't what I expect in a cyberpunk story.

what episode made you think the show wasn't good?

Adding the BLAME! manga to the recommendations. Be prepared for a lot of gore though. It's excessive.
I'm also recommending these that were mentioned
Ergo Proxy
Texhnolyze
Appleseed

Parasite Dolls is an underrated OVA. It has Chiala J Konaka on it, so it was really an interesting watch. I can't say much else about it though. The first episode is a bit of a slog, but the last two episodes are worth it.
Anyways, I don't think another good cyberpunk will come unless it's Despera, the stars align, or if the entire anime industry underwent radical change. Basically, you have to hope that the animators get sick of getting paid pennies and start striking.
Rick Deckard · 2022-06-02 05:04
No one has mentionned it so far, but I think animatrix has a great deal of cyberpunkish stuff. I personally haven't watched it (yet) but I heard people recommand it, and I've seen a gif of a robot getting killed and it looked kino af

I thought No Guns Life was kinda lacking (although maybe the manga is better, I only saw the two seasons). Setting is super basic, not that developped, and also iirc it only focuses on transhumanism, not cyberpunk.
Cowboy · 2022-06-03 00:49

Animatrix is just okay. A few of the shorts are decent, but I think it pulled back too much. Only a few them standout aesthetically and narratively. It's cool eye candy.

idk about cyberpunk anime, but paprika and steins;gate IMHO are good examples of sci-fi anime.
first anime is about mashing of reality and dreams (like in SEL - both is thinking about breaking frontires of ideal and material worlds so I think parallel is legit), second is about time travelling in hard-sci-fi-style.
alzo - composer of paprika is a truly genius. you should see and hear this if you didn't it until this post.

Christopher Nolan's Inception is either inspired by or a shameless ripoff of Paprika. Unlike Inception, Paprika left me scratching my head afterwards and needing to watch it again. I don't get how people can say Inception is somehow deep or difficult to follow. Paprika now....

First of all, there's Innocence, the second movie. I won't say it's better, but I personally prefer it. Then as >>9301 said you have the series, with two seasons and a movie. The second season is incredible. While not exactly cyberpunk, by the same director, Patlabor 1 and especially Patlabor 2 are great, and there's also Avalon, which is live-action but cyberpunk. And there's also Jin-Roh, still by the same guy, that kind of has the same vibe but in a different setting.
You can add to that the recent Cyberpunk anime, which is more action focus but still pretty good.
For more of a "despair" vibe, you have Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, and Casshern Sins. From there Dennou Coil can be interesting to see too. I never see people talking about Key the Metal Idol, but I like it a lot.
There's also Psycho-Pass if you liked the Ghost in the Shell series, but it's not as good.

Yurei Deco was far from amazing, but it was a comfy cyb anime
Lord Nikon · 2022-11-05 19:39
Just started watching pic related expecting garbage...
Some real subtle cyb stuff despite it being a normal person cartoon/anime. Also a lot of parallels to SEL, if it were in california and not Japan.
also had a laugh when
>dad literally shows his daughter /x/ on not-4chan to introduce conspiracies

Well I didn't have anything to watch tonight. AMC has thrown some pretty good stuff out like Turn and The Terror so why not give it a chance with animation. I'll let ya know what I think lainon thanks for the recommendation.

I would add terror in resonance if you are okay with the art style, no guns life for a less atmospheric and depressing texhnolyze.
Armitage has a classic feel, and i guess mardock scramble counts as cyberpunk. The latter is a series that has a bit of an odd premise, and the whole casino arc seemed a little drawn out.
Maybe dimension W...?

I was expecting the story to be something else entirely but that boring casino garbage turned into half the story.

Can give a +1 to this series.
I expected garbage, so put it on at 1.8x speed, and at that pacing it felt pretty good. I would expect it to feel like the plot is quite slow if watched at normal speed

Many other works of Satoshi Kon can easily qualify as /cyb/ as well
Go watch Perfect Blue (movie) and Paranoïa Agent (series)

Black Magic M-66 (Video 1987)
Nobody ever talks about this. It was the only movie ever directed by Ghost In The Shell's creator.

I think no one ever talks about it because it's really short and has a pretty inconsequential story.

Reminds me of how Lucy seems pretty inspired by Elfen Lied but was also inspired by inception. Stranger things was inspired by elfen lied (eleven was supposed to be the girl who always wanted to make her dad happy) and a more hollywood version of MK ultra.

Not sure if this counts as cyberpunk but should I just say fuarrrk IT and watch the Gundam compilation movies over the original series??? I'm talking about Gundam 0079. Apparently they were a major event. I'm tempted to just watch the first film instead of diving into the 42 episode series with a soykafty english dub

Best /cyber/ series I've seen since severance, and for me it came out of seemingly nowhere, absolutely nobody was talking about it. Gonna grab the dvd when I get the chance, really want to see more stuff like this being produced.
My only issue is the ending feels like it goes on 2 episodes too long while simultaneously feeling rushed. Given what I've heard about production, the way they did it makes sense though.
Jet Black · 2024-02-06 02:09

Just watched this, was good, a little bit meandering and plot heavy, reminiscent of a Neal Stephenson novel. I liked the ending.

the series. movies dont really improve over the series literally like 5ish reanimated/new scenes for each movie while cutting out a lot of content besides it not even all that good its just a compilation movie after all episodes cut and glued together instead of being made as movie from ground up
