What are lainons favourite examples of computer hardware related design? Mine mostly belong to 1970-1985 era. Curves of that time were interesting but not overwhelming. Very minimalistic usage of curves mixed well with mostly straight lines of cases of the time. The hardware casing looked visibly distinc and "alien". You immidiatly knew that you are looking at somethnig screamin "technology". It was creating some holy distance between profane non-computing everyday environment. It was not trying to blend in. It was not trying to look "lightweight". It was screaming about it's presence in a room by it's shape and dimensions. It was meant to be a center of attention. I find that appealing.

>>9144 it has it's own bulkiness and spaceship aesthetics appeal

>>9146 This is to me an example of design of laptop gone very wrong. But I am curious what qualities of this design are appealing to you.

>>9147 I guess I just like the bubbly and colorful look. Just a stark contrast to today's "minimal" hardware design where everything should look more or less the same — while the electronics of its era were meant to stick out and make you feel like this is the future. But I'm glad it's in the past, as it would get pretty obnoxious with all the tech around us today.

Also 70s scifi terminals look cool to me. I think it's because it mixes 70s aesthetics of computer hardware design with rugged military look.

>>9165 these would be perfect if the keyboards could slide out/ pop off. The slimness of modern laptops has very little real world benefit in my experience.

>>9166 >if lol
Armitage · 2022-03-22 15:54
>>9166 Yes it does, in case of these on left and right

>>9148 is the y2k meme still a thing? Those laptops were made with teenage girls in mind. It's not good hardware design, or even a good aesthetic

I don't know much about design language of different periods in computing (apart from being able to tell when something *could* be made), but w/e. I think nothing represents my taste in this regard better than the good old space cadet keeb. Beautiful, rounded edges combined with simple lines and absolutely GORGEOUS keycaps with beautiful (and readable!) lettering. And being an emacsfren it's only natural for me to love this keyboard, it just is. This keyboard will never be topped by anything and I dare you to prove me otherwise (ps. you won't). My other favorite piece of engineering is the NeXTcube. Say all you want about Jobs (yes, he was a hack. and also yes, he was a retard), but his eccentrism and stubbornness gave us some of the sexiest computers of the 90s and 2000s. On a partly unrelated note, I found a case that has the same vibe as the next cube's. Sadly, it doesn't have a 5.25 bay which is kind of a deal breaker for me.

The militarized brutality of this warhorse, the Tactical Command Terminal, is sublime. What other computer includes "Nuclear: Survivable" on the spec page?
Nell · 2022-03-30 23:22
>>9168 Well now I need one. I break everything I touch, so the ruggedness and utilitarianism of these computers makes me envious.

>>9352 Dang, that Cannon Cat is cool as fuarrrk. Strange that I see it for the 1st time just now. If someon is into aesthetics of terminals from Fallout 3 – WANG computers have similar vibe

>>9144 These kind of terminals remind of 2001: A Space Odyssey, albeit I think of the wooden, luxury designs in the early scenes. The kind of stuff you would see in a retro luxury car. Kind of like this, but better. Anyways, I don't really have a favourite design per say. I like early mac designs I guess, because they remind me of Lain and I like Y2K stuff.
Cat Mother · 2022-05-30 19:19
>>9165 I see that you are a man of culture. I always loved the aesthetics of the terminals in the Alien movie.

>>9397 What kind of segment display is that? I have never seen one that has circles in it.
Linda Lee · 2022-06-13 13:59
>>9397 >>9400 Oh, it is not a segment display, it is one of those nixie tubes (I have never seen those either). Sorry, I should have read your post before asking any questions.
Hagbard Celine · 2022-06-13 14:57
You can make segmented displays with circles or curves. I personally like old green VFDs with rounded digits and half-height zeros. This youtube channel went over alternatives to standard 7-segment displays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTB5XhjbgZA

Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and BBC Micro (and similar) because they were made for user developers. Also, PC-98 and BeOS/BeBox (and Haiku) are cool.
Frank Garza · 2022-06-17 06:58
>>9403 >BeOS/BeBox (and Haiku) are cool. Strange as I remembered them as peak late 90s puke. I hated that aesthetics back in the time.
