Dark Surrealism

Mitnick · 2021-09-27 01:29
Can we have a thread about dark surrealism? The kind of surrealism that was really popular in the 90s and early 00s until music videos made the aesthetic over-saturated. Of course, anything outside of this time-frame is more than welcome. Its general trappings are existentialism, homages to European literature & cinema, hyper realistic photography, and grimy, textured surfarces. Some notable examples are: Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth Bad Mojo GARAGE: Bad Dream Adventure The work of Brothers Quay 1st pic related is from a series of photos by Polish, horror artist Zdzisław Beksiński.

>GARAGE Bad Dream Adventure is a 1999 PC/Mac horror game developed by Tomomi Sakuba and Kinotrope, and published by Toshiba-EMI. This game is legendary for its former lost media status due to being only sold as a 3,000 units release, and this translation was complete very recently for ENG speaking audiences by fans of the game.

This is actually a sort of genre that I'm really interested in. A sort of black psychedelic trip. I'll list some media I conflate with it. > First 3 Silent Hill games. Especially the first one. First one has a very particular feel that the later ones don't have. The whole time you have no clue whats really going on in the town and there are at least 3 different 'what ifs' presented to explain it. Tons of references to legitimate western occultism. You're constantly waking up in different areas of the town. The weird stilted dialogue. Very dreamlike. The first one is a really nice art piece if you look at it standalone. Another two are these Half Life 1 mods from the same dev. Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear. Both have a heavy layer of dark surrealism. The guy who made them says he used a lot of direct inspiration from his dreams. There's this part in AoM where you enter this super bright colored mansion (as opposed to the whole game up until this point which was very dark) . Apparently the mansion was added after he had a dream about it. Interesting to listen to and watch the developer commentaries on these games after you play them. And some music: The bands Skinny Puppy, Ministry, and Death Grips are all the most psychedelic bands I've ever listened to. They're all bad trips. They're great. >>8586 That game Drowned God, right?

>>8768 Have you ever seen David Lynch's films. I have only seen Eraserhead, but it's really cool and I think you'll enjoy it.

>>8587 this clip reminded me of the setting "samosbor" comes from the Russian-speaking imageboards 2ch. undying horror, grimdark, steel airtight doors, gas masks, concrete and the smell of raw meat. I don't want to bore you, but if you're interested - just let me know.

Dave McKean, anyone? >>8768 My friend who has fallen victim to internet guru self help types who want his money tells me my bathroom "totally" reminded him of Skinny Puppy. It was not a compliment.

>>9361 I actually have his comic Cages on my pc, and have had it in a noticeable part of files since the art interested me.

>>9366 maybe I should create another thread about it. please have patience, I have autism I can't do it now.
Molly Millions · 2022-06-06 20:23
>>9350 Sorry to ruin the discussion. I do also have an interest in this thing you're talking about, but I also wish to voice my confusion. Is 2ch not a Japanese imageboard, rather than a Russian one?
