How can I give a dorm room more of a cyberpunk aesthetic? I feel like small sized, cheap and ugly rooms are the perfect prerequisites to make it look like I live the futuristic high tech low life right now.
I already got the necessary chaos (which is kind of unavoidable in a small space), a bunch of bottles that once contained caffeinated or alcoholic beverages standing around (don't go grocery shopping daily so they do sum up naturally) and a small desk filled up with my old thinkpad and tons of useful cables and devices.
What can I do to make my room to achieve the cyberpunk look that we all love so much?
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2021-09-17 08:00
Dunno about high tech, but low life is easy as shizz.
>Second hand tech, broken hardware fixed or reused for parts.
>Fixing cables, soldered wires and electrical tape is schway as fucc. Organize them into wiring harnesses or just plain wire bundles for extra industrial look.
>Build own tech based on established concepts and maybe blueprints. DIY ventilation systems and lighting is especially helpful for optics, not so much for practicality. But hey, some things just help us be more motivated, or comfortable, so go ahead. Fairy lights for a scuffed, DIY look, LED strips for cold industrial.
>Egg carton insulation is great for when your walls are thin, and it adds a certain aesthetic to your room. Not to mention it muffles sound, so you can have more privacy/quietness in your room.
>Window blinds, screen or blanket in front of the door, drown out the outside world.
>Very important, most people forget that: if you want to look tech savvy, keep your room clean. Dust is the enemy of any technical system, and should be fought viciously. Vacuum your room at least twice a week, wipe all surfaces once a week. Arrange everything to not inhibit the cleaning activities, so it takes away only a minimal amount of time from your schedule.
>Small bonus:buy a small compressor. I got one with a tank, and it makes cleaning my pc a matter of minutes.
I wish you all the best, chummski.

imo Cyberpunk aesthetic for the sake of it like just leaving broken PCs sitting around seems really silly. Something that's important in the visual style itself is that everything has a purpose.
Try and find or make decorative things that serve multi purpose, let's say furniture as an example, like those lift-top coffee tables. Those Raspberry Pi smart mirrors. Things of that nature.
If you're already tech-savvy, I think your room will naturally start to have that "cyberpunk" look just from you doing your usual activities.

Read about the egg cartons last night and it doesn't seem to do much for sound insulation, but you can fill the inside with paper to make it a tiny bit more effective.

you're already paying out the ass to a mega-corporation for a useless degree and way-jacked-up housing what's more cyberpunk than that? just suffer in there your little rented hole is enough

You americans really think every country is as bad as yours, don't you? If you think that university is useless I am curious what your definition of useful is. Getting you a lot of money? Kek, that's pretty sad if your life goal is just to hoard money and consume things. For me, uni was a great episode of my life, I made the best friends I ever had, studied stuff that fascinated me (math) and best of all I didn't pay a cent of tuition fees because I don't live in a capitalist soykafhole. But even if I had, it wouldn't be so bad because if you get a little lucky (as I did fortunately) you can get really good jobs as a mathematician.

what do you do? I could find nothing to even try to do, unless i went back to do PhD
>You americans really think every country is as bad as yours, don't you?
Many countries are fuarrrked with tuition fees. You were very lucky to have nothing.
I'm not american but I regret studying, including the mathematics degree i did. I didnt make friends and didnt even enjoy it - i am fascinated by math, but that is separate from all the university bullshit

I have a pile of laptops sitting around. On top of that, CDs and hard media sitting around in piles. minimalist bed and only one or two soykafty drawings or printed pictures on the wall. Also a bunch of cables running everywhere and a lot of night lights since I don't like white light.
Chani · 2021-10-10 17:48
just throw cables all over your room and use boxes of dvd's, cd's and books to decorate your walls, use low lights to illuminate your room and try to have striped curtains, so that the sun rays come in that peculiar way. if you have many electronic devices, put them all over the room to give the appearance that the cables come from there.
enjoy decorating your room.

University is mostly useless except for STEM, medicine, and trades. Everything else is mostly useless, wallhanger degrees.

Hello OP, you dont have to perfectly follow a room from Lain, Deus Ex, or whatever. Those examples are pretty stylized. Try just building your own space with a tech utility, books, and some decorations for a little personal flair. A cyberpunk's room should have these in mind. I hope these examples help.

You don't actually want your bedroom to look like something from a cyberpunk film it will fuarrrk up your sleep and make you miserable living in gloomy filth everyday
Also its a very poser thing to do.

Yes EMF potentially interferes with melatonin production like light does.

I hadn't really considered EMF more just constant distractions from various monitors as well as all the blinkenlighten that's on everything these days, the buzzing sounds of power supplies and things charging, and the depression that always follows living in a cluttered, grubby hole with poor air circulation and no space for actual living activities, like where do people hang their clothes in their lite hackerman coom caves? The answer is on the floor, and that soykafs not good

Exactly, you don't use DRM media because it's botnet, therefore you have hard media from eBay or Goodwill sitting around. It comes naturally.
Masami Eiri · 2021-12-16 23:58
The idea of filling your room with junk is kinda retarded. I recommend getting as many monitors as possible and also hoarding old hardware, even if it is dead. Maybe a switch with lots of blinking lights would help.

Google Translate translated "capitalist soykafhole" into Turkish as "Istanbul" lol

You go to university? Enter abandoned buildings/rooms, go dumpsterdiving, or walk the halls of your labs to collect free goodies. I know that this works very well at some places, although your mileage may vary. Of course, be respectful, and read the laws pertaining to your jurisdiction.
