Probably a low-hanging fruit, oh well - I read Transmetropolitan years ago (I intend to give it another whirl, now I've reminded myself) and thus I'm not sure to what extent I can vouch for it. But I have a fairly strong hunch it'll be of interest to some people here. If I were to pick any off the top of my head, start here.

I would recommend "Forming" by Jesse Moynihan, who was one of the writers on Adventure Time and the art director for The Midnight Gospel. He does it all by hand, painting and stuff. Touches on occult-like symbolism and religion but also has some fun with words instead of being stuck up.
Also "The Incal" by Moebius and Jodorowsky, in my opinion underrated. The art is amazing and you can tell Jodorowsky worked on it.

heard many good things about it, but the character designs and the impression the work makes as whole is kinda off-putting to me
have you read planetary?
there's a rather cheap omnibus release of that one so i was considering maybe reading it first to give warren elis a try
