Crypto Art

What does lain think of Crypto art and NFTs? as an artist I think it's a pretty cyber development in arts and culture. Apparently people are selling virtual homes and furniture as well as plot of lands in virtual environments.

>Apparently people are selling virtual homes and furniture as well as plot of lands in virtual environments.
This sort of soykaf is just wrong, it just shows why the internet and financial systems need to go.
Im a gamedev and do content of this sort sometimes, i find it more than disturbing that people have confused the real world and the virtual world so much.

as a gamedev have you worked on any crypto integrated games? does it bode well with players considering it's sort of a niche when you consider the whole market?

I dont do commercial, stuff and im not touching crypto with a 10ft pole.
fuarrrk the players and most of fuarrrk the whole market and everyone in it.
This consumerist capitalist bullshit is why i make games for free even if i starve.
With 10000 of cryptos and markets around i dont see how any of it could be used in any meaningful way.
Im a dev not a stock broker, beyond some api(prolly a simple https request) that interact with a transaction and account system, i dont see what else there is to it.
I fuarrrking hate making accounts of any sort and any system that encourages that, same for any sort comercialization of digital content, information should be free.
This whole idea of paying for digital content disgusts me to the point where it makes my blood boil and believe me over the years i have seen so much stupid just thinking about it gives me fuarrrking vertigo.
People making play money of non existing things from idiots who like to pretend that unreal things are real is just another tip on this whole sick society.
First it was rampant consumerism, now its not even real consumerism, now theyre not even paying for real things anymore.
People allowing themselfs to be sucked in to a fake world and then going round claiming their issues are significant, just another step in the new normal.
This is just the most outright abuse of computers i can so far think of, the internet was made to free us from all this bullshit, not to lock people into fake lifes.
Batou · 2021-03-26 10:49
Crypto finally moving on to new and innovative ways to part rich fools from their money that aren't simply stealing their wallet or ICOs. All the aesthetics, none of the real punk, and with being marketed to people who don't understand how to pin in IPFS, it's going to be a real show.

I agree that the current internet social vortex is cancerous and giving way to a cancer culture but I think categorizing art into real and unreal on the basis of medium is kinda obtuse. Like you would consider buying a painting ok because it exists in physical space but a virtually modeled piece of art in VR space would be considered "unreal"? actually using digital space for art instead of commercial and social corpo propaganda should is great.
Dox · 2021-03-26 18:32
>>7882
I can agree with you there, but see its not real art, its not a product produced for the sole purpose of being bought by some poor sucker to feed the need for digital materialism and online social ladder climbing.
Almost none of that stuff is artistic or serves and artistic purpose, its just imitation of some sort of virtual space.
My point is these asset markets are absolutely cancerous and totally useless, only encourage people to be more lazy unhealthy useless soykafs than they already are.
People could use the time and money they spend on this sort of soykaf to create actual art or do something good instead of blowing it on sort of digital world escapism that imitates the real world poorly.
Dont get me started on the fact that there is tons of good free art out there that can be used, but people are usually lazy consumerist whores and if the commercial cock isnt put right in their mouth they wont bother.

>What does lain think of Crypto art and NFTs?
They're for grifters and idiots. fuarrrk hack artists who can't imagine making a living without commodification and fuarrrk anyone who wants to ruin the potential of digital post scarcity for a crypto meme. Besides my ideological objections, the notion of "ownership" that NFTs offer is on par with a gacha game that lets you "own" an outfit for your anime girl avatar if you pay enough neetbux for it. It may sound like I'm exaggerating but I'm really not. Look into it. It has only slightly more legal weight than if you paid someone to let you name a star.

Dr. X · 2021-06-26 07:02
It's a scam like all crypto currency. Not that normal currency isn't also a scam.
Marly Krushkhova · 2021-07-30 21:46
I heard of it first when someone sold some old meme image for thousands of dollars. I hated the concept on the spot, even before learning about the enviromental damage it did.
There was a huge scare among digital artists since some cryptofuckers went around selling NFTs of art they didn't make. They just called dibs and suddenly they "owned" this art.

Neither, value on infinitely replicable items without any observable differences between copies doesn't really work.
Owning ideas is also nonsensical. How do you steal an idea?
Pris · 2021-09-10 20:51
It's a consequence of human psychology to covet unique and rare things no matter how useless they are aside from showing off class or status which itself is perverse. From things like rocks, to limited products, to game skins. NFTs are just egregious in how useless they are.

why are original picasso paintings worth millions times more than highly accurate copies you can buy from china? are the songs people put on mp3 worth nothing because they are trivially replicable? they took effort and creativity to make by the musicians, why shouldn't they be compensated and some be recognized as their beneficiary?

I dont think NFTs are as useless as it sounds, im think somethink alike >>8495, also wasnt expecting lainons taking it that way..
Money has always been about trusting information, trusting something symbolic is tradable. NFTs just means that information of value with some art look, the whole thing is just that blockchains represents some superior form of making money unhackable. About the morality of it, we are too used to seeing the enroviment with a corporative influenced view made to pass the guilt to us, when the only thing that has worked is actually sabotage. Some random middle class person getting money making nft art is not much different to just some artist being alive at his home using eletricty to exist there and produce for two months. That random middle class artist also has no power to stop the moraly questionable actions of the rich, rather probably being scammed by them on most of stuff around him, and would lose nothing complying with methods to make his art last long, be seen or become commercial.
Its pretty funny to see the weird normal user soykaf that comes from popularization, though. English is not my first language so maybe some phrases came out weird.

NFTs, in their original inception, are really promising. I think a good (albeit unlikely) application would be multimedia, Imagine a user-maintained blockchain where people can derive a public proof-of-purchase for copies of movies, songs, albums, games, or other intangibles. That way, 15 years down the line when Sony inevitably thinks you need to buy Spiderman 2 again, you can point to the blockchain as a reference for already owning it. These are the applications that would truly liberate us, which is why corporations spend so much money keeping their power centralized and making kids buy a picture of a monkey with a snapback and a spliff. If there were real applications of decentralized ledgers, it would be much harder for companies to exploit their respective industries.
Of course, though, owning digital media is a scam from the start. You cannot claim to own something in a medium where copying is free, which is where NFTs start to fall apart. The blockchain, contrary to popular belief, is a social construct. Take Tether, for example, which was supposedly backed 1:1 with US paper bills. Obviously such a system cannot exist, and even if it did exist there would be plenty of opportunities for speculative investment based on actual leverage. The reality was that their token was backed less than 300:1 (300 Tether per single USD). You may as well not back it at all, at that rate.
I hope I don't have to tell you this, but there will be no Metaverse. The people investing in the sector expect insane returns, beckoning a new age of online consumerism backed by real-life ID, integrated payment processing and oppressive API entitlements. As I mentioned earlier, though, they're investing in nothing. The scary part is that these companies know this, and they're hedging their bet on their innate ability to sell you zero-margin commodities like a new random ape or a funny cat face.
You want the Metaverse? Go to Wal-mart.
Agent Smith · 2021-10-20 19:47
im sick of hearing about the environmentalism angle. it feels like pulling punches when NFTs are fuarrrked up on much more fundamental level. imposing artificial scarcity on digital media is a shameful and reactionary thing to do. even if you're not strongly anti-consumerist and opposed to commodified art, like myself, i hope you can at least agree that moving to commission and patronage is a more reasonable way to contend with digital post-scarcity than IP rent seeking or NFT grifting.
Ivan Petrov · 2021-10-20 19:51
>>8660
agree fully. i think soykaf like this where we're only valuing scarcity instead of the value of the art itself is the death of art
Naomi Nascimento · 2021-10-21 00:48
The only thing that's good about it is the fact you can scam hundreds of rubes with literal jpegs. The Idea of "owning" a jpeg is a stupid. When NTFs first dropped it might have been a ok idea, but the whole point is to buy this in hopes of finding a rube dumber than you to buy it off you.

1. fuarrrk cummunism.
2. Believing that some picture becomes scarce just because you added hash to it is utterly retarded and laughable. Even bigger than believing bitcoin has value other than speculation token. Remember times when people were trading land on the moon? I do.

The scam that is Bitcoin and NFTs isn't really that different from how state sanctioned currency works. And in case you bring it up, no, currency backed by gold and silver doesn't change that either because there is no objective value and we don't actually know how much gold and silver there is for real and an asteroid could just come by covered in it.
Neo · 2022-01-16 02:33
>>8959
>The scam that is Bitcoin and NFTs isn't really that different from how state sanctioned currency works.
it's more volatile because there's no group that can set interest rates to make some attempt at controlling inflation.
>no, currency backed by gold and silver doesn't change that either because there is no objective value and we don't actually know how much gold and silver there is for real and an asteroid could just come by covered in it.
gold and silver are both genuinely useful for a wide variety of purposes. Furthermore, it is easy to purify them, and especially gold doesn't tend to chemically change over time, making it very easy to say that some amount of gold now will stay the same amount of gold in the future.

Yes it's more volatile than something like the US but not developing countries under attack by the CIA.
>gold and silver are both genuinely useful for a wide variety of purposes.
Which is why it's a bad idea to use as a currency exchange because it takes it away from useful applications into being something any rich twat can trade all their money in for.
>Furthermore, it is easy to purify them, and especially gold doesn't tend to chemically change over time, making it very easy to say that some amount of gold now will stay the same amount of gold in the future
This is extremely naïve. The amount can increase at any unexpected point in time. All it takes is finding a newly discovered place to mine whether on earth or if something rich in gold passes by near enough to Earth to be harvested or crashes down. The value of gold and silver is also in constant fluctuation. As population goes up value of gold goes up because there is less to go around. This flawed system abandoned for a reason as will all money eventually.
Rick Deckard · 2022-01-27 15:03

Well, that argument too doesn't hold because these things get their worth from historical value. There's something special about holding a piece of art that belonged to someone special that had impact on history. NFTs are literally copy&paste edits of monkeys with different colors. If you want a piece of art from someone special, you can just ask for a commision. Even ask for your name to be put on it. It's much more personal than any NFT ever will.
