Discovering New Media

Case · 2020-12-02 03:52
How do lainons tend to find new stuff to watch, if at all? I tend to go off of recommendations 90% of the time, mainly from forums and boards like here. What do you default to if bored and wanting some good soykaf?
Mentat · 2020-12-02 10:26
I tend to just check torrent sites for whats trending or new and see if there's anything interesting popping up. Browse forums and see if some ideas pop up based on what people are discussing. Work through my backlog or check if previously good creators have come out with something new.
Dox · 2020-12-03 18:52
Look up the directors or writers and see what else they've done. Second to this is to do the same with performers, but not so much with producers. Websites like IMDumB which have "people who liked this also liked this" are sometimes helpful but not reliable.

Watching WANDAVISION; MCU Phase 4 begins. Slow burn but overall I like it.

>>7142 I have 1 site that lists all of the new / returning 3DPD and 1 site that lists all of the anime I could be watching in a given month/season and their air times. For non television based media, mainly Youtube recommendations.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-03-15 13:23
>>7142 If I'm trying to kill time I browse the Netflix catalog to find a dark and slow-burn european tv show (La Trêve is really good) or some teen mystery (I'm a Pretty Little Liars fanboy). If I'm looking for anime I just type "weird dementia anime" on DDG, if it's a cartoon I use Lilly Orchard's yt channel to find cool stuff, if it's a movie or tv show I just ask my friends. BTW here's a list of stuff I like. Manga: Aku no Hana Akira Vinland Saga Anime: FLCL Serial Experiments Lain Samurai Champloo Ergo Proxy Tv shows: Mr Robot Ozark Atlanta Movies: American Beauty The Irishman Pulp Fiction Cartoons: Avatar The Last Airbender The Owl House I'm also into ARG's and creepypastas: PostContent JustAcquaintances Kraina Grzybow

Tastedive (nee Tastekid) used to be excellent for making suggestions based on what you like, but the interface has been dumbed down a LOT since the last update. You used to be able to browse the music, book, TV, movie, and game tastes of people who liked the same things as you, but now it's very literal, ie, you can't see what music people who like the same books as you listen to. It's books=books. If there's any more functionality, it's hidden behind a paywall. Does anyone know a site that does what Tastedive/kid used to do?
Case · 2021-03-25 23:12
I sincerely recommend the tastes of Piero Scaruffi. He doesn't limit himself to a predictable style or sound and is easily one of the most consistent and reliable critics around today - if not THE most with regards to the absurd number of things that he's catalogued. I'd also sincerely suggest anybody to offer alternatives because I've almost worn him thin and have been considering dedicating myself to mindlessly going through the. chart images on 4chan recommendation wikis.

I also check out recommendations from forums and boards as well. I also just casually check out lists of genres I'm interested in and yearly lists of releases from whatever period I'm "feeling" in the moment. I also tend to still go on cover art just as I did during the days of rentals/random cheap buying impulses.
Ivan Horvat · 2021-10-19 02:27
>>7142 Usually I tend to follow random sites or try to find smaller podcasts and smaller bands on Spotify or other fan communities. Usually when podcasts are small they tend to have very out there tastes rather than the mainstream stuff. For example I learned on a podcast I learned about the Light Novels being a thing especially some of the classics for anime I have watched. Tenchi Muyo, Ghost In The Shell with Batou's backstory, Slayers etc that are coming West. The Light Novels go in depth detail on the things the Anime does not cover. For example in Youjo Senki the anime follows the manga but the manga does not follow the novel which details who God is and sets everything up wonderfully it has excellent detail vs the anime that just exists as this opposing force. As for watching new Anime I always look at the Synopsis and judge if I think I will like that or not. I also look on image boards.
Drano · 2021-10-19 02:30
I tend to look at Anichart and see what is going to be airing for the next season. Check any I will like and usually use a 3rd party site to watch it and get the Blu Ray down the line if I like it. It's worth it to check for things coming out every season as Summer is usually the time for one or two Blockbuster out of the year in Anime.
Dujour · 2021-10-20 16:07
I enjoy collecting media so I usually go to imdb and browse 80's-90's films and torrent whatever sounds interesting. I get anxiety thinking that there are movies and things that might disappear from the internet so i archive them to reshare in the future. Sometimes if I'm bored I'll go check out the xdcc channels but sadly they're not what they used to be. Streaming services are garbage and everything new is mostly ghey as hell unless it's foreign. Also i heard netflix made a live action cowboy bebop. Just, ugh.. Im surprised Spike's not a marxist tranny.
Otacon · 2021-10-21 06:54
As of late, I find myself watching some from the 90s the most. Generally I try to find the more niche stuff I can online, but rewatching stuff like Gunsmith Cats, Cowboy Bebop, and Lain is always nice. As far as new stuff goes, finding enjoyable content seems fewer and farther between but possible. You've just gotta try out a soykaf-ton of content.

>>7142 it's getting harder and harder each year. I used to be able to find great recs everywhere, even 4chan and reddit. Then, for a while, I was able to rely on letterboxd for film suggestions. Then that became really popular and much less reliable (still way better than IMDB though). Nowadays my wife gives me the best film recs, she's more active on letterboxd and uses services like Mubi. If you're new to film, letterboxd is still a great start, just look for "best of" lists. Or lurk for a little bit on /tv/'s /film/ general, if it's still alive for TV, I mostly just browse streaming library, hoping I finally stumble upon something good. for music, I use Spotify's Discover Weekly and Apple Music's Listen Now. DW is excellent, you just have to use it for a loooong time and have a significant amount of liked songs for it to show you actually relevant music. If you're not deep into music, start with looking up your favorite musician's inspirations and people they've collaborated with. for anime I just use anilist nowadays, and randomly click stuff on anime streaming sites. Some stuff I like  tv: Atlanta The Wire Silicon Valley The Young Pope Better Call Saul Veep, The Thick of It Extras, The Office UK currently watching Slow Horses anime: Paranoia Agent lain of course Welcome to Irabu's Office Sonny Boy Heike Story Hyouge Mono Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (has some gay undertones, seriously, I think it was written by a fujo artist. Still good and turns out they're all straight) Kaiba Devilman Crybaby Ping Pong Monster (overrated, twice as long as it should've been. Still good) currently watching Natsume's Book of Friends before bed cartoons: King of the Hill The Boondocks South Park SpongeBob s1-3 early Simpsons, early Futurama film: Ikiru In the Heat of the Sun Yi Yi Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets The Taste of Tea Parasite First Reformed Calvary City of God Still Walking I'd appreciate any suggestions if you have any!
