good Russian movies

Nobody important · 2020-09-29 22:06
I'm an American trying to teach myself Russian, I have a grammar book and I will use online resources to complement it. Mostly I'm interested in reading Russian academic works that have not been translated into English, but speaking and understanding the spoken language is also desirable. I have heard that one good way to start absorbing a language is to watch movies in the language. What are some good Russian movies with decent sound quality? I love Stalker and I might use that one. Any other suggestions from Russian lains?

The most famous Russian film in the west is probably Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. It's good. Something else you should consider is films that you're already familiar with that have a Russian voiceover/dub. Based on your image, I'm going to go with anime.
Anamika · 2020-09-29 22:34
>>6754 I don't actually watch much anime lol, I just find the image funny. That is a good idea, I could for instance find a Russian dub of The Big Lebowski.
fsociety · 2020-09-29 22:39
On a related note, where do you download your Russian movies? I use rutracker but frequently what I'm looking for is only available as 720p or as a full blu ray rip. Is that just how the Russian scene is?

>>6756 There used to be a site that was basically an archive of Russian cinema (found it probably 7 or 8 years ago), and they had pretty much any Russian movie made with English subtitles. Unfortunately, I forgot the name, but last I checked it was behind a paywall.

>>6751 I would recommend White Sun of the Desert (Белое Солнце Пустыни) from 1970. Also Bumer (Бумер) from 2003, and Racketeer (Рэкетир) from 2007 which is Kazakh Russian-language film.
Mario Rossi · 2020-11-07 06:19
Is this thread full of Russian elitists or just clueless westerners? What's the point in recommending most popular films with international recognition? I expected real obscure arthouse stuff or just plain trashy pictures. Gee, these people unironically read Dostoevsky outside school assignments.

idk how to describe 'a visitor to a museum' without using the word depressing, but that makes it sound similar to every other russian movie ive ever seen - though i must admit i havent delved too deep in this area its a post apocalytic film where mutants called "degenerates" practice a strange religion where they beg to no longer exist. the main character wants to find a museum on the bottom of the ocean that can only be reached when the tides pull back.

Try pic related, it features a medieval society in contact with a space faring one. It's the second time the story was adapted, the other version is an 80s German version which is more in the vein of other 80s science fantasy like Krull. The Russian version is more arty or whatever. >>7025 >without using the word depressing It applies.

>>7027 Honestly all of the Russian films based on books by the Strugatsky brothers tend to be worth a watch, they're good reads too.
Dujour · 2020-11-19 17:38
>>7028 2008 Prisoners of Power/Inhabited Island adaptation is always kicked like dead whales down the beach by Russian film critics for it's visual style and very poor main actor performance to the point where he had to be dubbed (fairly regular practice in Russian cinema, but only when main character is played by a foreign actor), but I actually like it's goofy cliche cyberpunk dystopian city aesthetics which obviously looks borrowed from many western works like Mario Brothers, Judge Dredd, 5th Element and other 90's classics, and even something out of 2002 movie Equilibrium which is in itself a compound work borrowing from 20th century dystopian classics, it also sports some unconventional vehicles like a 6-wheeler coupe made from LADA Zhiguli and tanks designed and rebuilt by actual tank factory in Ukraine. There's a particularly memetic moment in the end of first part criticized by everyone where a pink automatic tank appears in a green jungle, and later when MC boards it through what looks like a quickly-cut access hatch and a plywood trapdoor covering it. The official story goes like this: tank factory engineers argued that an automatic tank should not have any trapdoors on it and re3fused to make one, so the film crew had to improvise on site, the "critics" criticize lavish pink color of a tank not belonging to the forest, however they forget that tank was malfunctioning and might have followed it's way from a neighboring desert. After all, the original book aesthetics: depiction of architecture, people and society are more about post-war Stalin's Moscow where authors lived, and quirky cyberpunk late 90's aesthetic is just a fad of the time to hook on youngsters. Although, I reckon a darker diesel-atompunk version of the movie with vidrelated aesthetics would indeed score more positive reviews and cinema awards, much like Hard to Be God.

I used to watch a lot of Russian ww2 movies with my dad (he would translate them for me in real time) and the best one I remember by name was Fortress of War (2010). There was also a really old one about a tank commander I saw on VHS which I don't remember by name, there was a scene where the main character is fishing in a pond until he gets called up by radio to enter his T-34 and drive to battle, any Russians have an idea what film it could have been?
