I don't have any channel recommendations, but let me tell you about avoiding the site altogether, because every change they make makes it worse.
1. Youtube provides RSS feeds. They're very useful.
They are in the form of https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=<channel ID>
2. mpv - and probably others - can open Youtube URLs directly.
3. On Android, there's a piece of software called NewPipe that parses YouTube webpages - and RSS feeds - to provide a more pleasant interface.
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/
3. There's a Firefox addon that redirects Youtube pages to Invidious automatically.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hooktube-redirect/
4. If you combine these, you can avoid ever opening the site. I have a script[1] that decides whether to open mpv or a web browser when I click an entry in QuiteRSS for stuff I care about.
5. You can feed youtube-dl a channel or playlist URL and it will download the lot.
Bonus: not using the website will probably result in you wasting less time as you're not subject to their psychological warfare.

Started watching because of GNU/Linux, stayed for the life advice. Things like independance, setting a good example,
and especially one's relationship to technology (less organizational technology). I think many people dismiss him because of the thumbnails, or because they don't want to shake off what image boards have done to them.

Good post. You should add invidious and the browser add-on Privacy Redirect to your routine. I have mine set up so every youtube link I click opens its counterpart on https://invidio.us
here's the add-on:

I personally use a userscript, cause avoid having to much addons. This one is pretty good, highly configurable (and works for twitter>nitter; instagram>bibliogram...).

Haven't watched this but his criticism of science is really on point tho, this generation (here we go) is fascinated by science but they don't know:
1- soykaf they talk about, even some scientist don't watch how lawrence krauss was owned Hamza Tzortzis... now imagine asking normal people those questions.
2- massive presumptions (checkmate atheists) we have to make when doing logic, science just werks and that's what I care about. if I want to get to understand something like:
>muh consciousness
idc what science says
this was rambly I have to watch the video to formulate an opinion but why would you even listen to that just read nassim taleb or something. Generally speaking Luke's lifestyle and *nix chaddery is whats appealing.

You can also easily export all your YouTube subscriptions as an OPML file, which then can be imported into an RSS client.
My question is whether there's any RSS client which supports showing YouTube thumbnails, though?

No, it looks nice though and solves my first complaint with RSS clients: that you often have to open articles in a web browser because rendering is inconsistent (and not every feed includes full article text). However, my main reason for doing things this way is because I want all of my feeds to live on my home server so I don't have to deal with syncing between devices, and miniflux seemed like the easiest way to do that.

>Youtube RSS feeds
If you wanted to avoid the site even more you could always use invidious RSS versions instead.
>Firefox add-on
I use Invidition which also turns twitter links into nitter links. You can also choose which invidious instance it turns links into. Maybe it'll add bibliogram instead of instagram but at that point it'll start turning into a bloated generic add-on probably.
>Download the lot
I also advise starting to archive your favourite videos and channels because they will undoubtedly be deleted soon.

Same, it was actually his ideas on independence that got me into watching his videos, I might start making videos on peertube someday. well that if I stop being a good for nothing fool.
>The Hated One
He is in a weird position I find his content not as effective, he appeals to normal people however he just brushes off slightly complicated topics. The result is people getting the most basics of stuff done and ignoring the rest which is better than nothing but not that useful for the future of the internet.

A lot better that virgin philosophy tube.
I watch Contra mostly for the aesthetic, at least both of these two are better than "logic/rational" channels. I think they are damaging and time consuming. You basically have to read hume and then you can see how little they have to offer... imagine being a dumped down version of a philosopher who thought it was a good way to waste time. (by rational channels I mean Rationality Rules and other cringy soybois like cosmic skeptic)
Acid Burn · 2020-07-18 18:14
>>6305
> I think they are damaging and time consuming.
Who do you mean by "they"?
I do agree that reading actual philosophy is more enlightening, but it is actually serious work. And a lot of texts, especially the older ones, are written in a way that does not lead itself to easy reading. So IMO watching videos is completely fine, as long as you don't trick yourself that you know soykaf just because you watched some guy on youtube ramble about the topic.

I largely agree, but Jimmy Dore is the real deal. He makes no claim to presenting any sort of objective journalistic truth of his own. What he does instead is interview genuine journalists like Chris Hedges and Aaron Mate, or air video of events on the ground like protests or politicians saying the quiet parts out loud. It's not just video after video of literally nothing but ranting into a camera. (Though he does do that occasionally - but it's usually funny, so I give him a pass.)
It also helps that Jimmy's "studio" is a greenscreen in his garage and that he (nominally) has a day job. I'm always intensely suspicious of youtube folks with expensive studios and no other job, like the Hill TV Rising bunch or The Young Turks. Whenever a lot of money is spent on production values and salaries, I want to know exactly who pays the bills, and what the quid pro quo is.

It's not his views I have a problem with. I'm all on board with his contempt for modern capitalism. I agree that indigenous people worldwide have been fuarrrked over. What I have a problem with is his (and many other peoples') excessive worry about form over substance in how those views are presented.
If I see some public figure doing or believing something insane, I'll happily use the word "lunacy" to describe their actions, and I'll stand by my use of that word. I won't spend five minutes in my next video obsequiously apologizing for my "ableism" in my use of the word "lunacy" because it has historical roots in the stigmatization of mental illness.

>Louis Rossman
Makes nice practical videos about board repair on computers (mostly macbooks). Pretty good personality and a staunch defender of right to repair (frequently debates corporate lobbyists in state level hearings and such). Runs a repair shop in NYC.
>Eric the Car Guy
Not so active any more but I learned basically everything I know about fixing my car from him. Used to be really prolific so there's a huge back catalog of videos showing how to do very specific repairs that other similar channels don't cover.
>Technology Connections
Well produced informational videos on various everyday technologies. He does a good job of weaving the history of how something came about with a mechanical explanation of how it works. Seems to have an interest in standards in technology. I also think he's funny in a "goofball" kind of way.
>Hainbach
Very thoughtful German experimental/ambient music producer who makes videos on analog synthesis. I say "synthesis" and not "synths" because he isn't just a standard synth review channel. His claim to fame is probably the videos he made about using old signal test equipment for music production. He also does cool stuff with tape, and more standard eurorack-based vids if that's your thing.
>LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER
Absolute mad scientist of analog circuitry. The backdrop of many of his vids is an 8 foot tall rack of synthesizer modules he made himself, and he has quite a few tutorials showing how he makes them. Besides that he does a lot of crazy one-off projects. Recently he's been apparently trying to work out exactly how many independent VCOs he can put in a single giant synth. Currently he's at 1000 lol.
>Team O'Neil
Runs a rally driving school in New Hampshire. Makes a lot of good videos teaching how to drive fast off-road, plus some stuff about how to modify a car to do so.
