Lainstream Movie Night
XeonSquared · 2020-06-14 08:20
In about 6 hours - 2PM UTC - I'm going to stream Weathering with You, Makoto Shinkai's latest movie, on lainstream (see the top bar), it's an exceedingly comfy movie with beautiful artwork, and was released on BD about 3 weeks ago.
Do tune in and join the IRC channel: irc.lainchan.org #lainstream
This will be my first time streaming a video with FFMPEG instead of live footage with OBS, so hopefully it'll all go well. If it does, I'll probably do this some more.

Apologies for the minor hiccup, I'll remember to set subtitle tracks explicitly next time.

I watched this in theaters when it released. It really does have a beautiful art style and it heavily focuses on water along with reflections. The theater release had a brief interview with the director who talked about the difficulty this added, like being required to animate several things twice due to all of the reflections.
I considered writing a review of this anime, but I don't review anime. The reason I wouldn't rate it as high as I normally would is the obscene amount of advertisements and product placements put in it. I wasn't expecting it in an anime, but it has them in spades. There are a few scenes where they're making food in a microwave and the perspective is in the microwave with a close up of the packaging, and I didn't understand why they did this until I realized this was simply product placement for products I didn't recognize.
I don't regret viewing the film, but it's something to keep in mind. I rarely visit the theaters, but I've noticed almost every film I've seen does this, and it's disgusting. The only film I can think of that didn't was fantasy, where it's protected by that not making sense.

Going to do another session at 8AM UTC.

Yeah, I caught it shortly after it came out in Japan. The McDonalds stuff has to have money changing hands, but it bled outwards: Was Honda paying for their vehicles to be shown, or was it just the right thing to have? Ended up questioning that for everything identifiable.
Felt weird to have product placement for stuff I didn't know, too. Wrong market, I guess.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Pick something interesting to stream and follow those steps on the stream section.

Copyright is a stain on society.

Copyright has definitely gone way further than it should thanks to evil megacorps like disney, but getting rid of it entirely would do way more harm than it would good. For example, if we didn't have copyright, film simply would not exist as it does today. Movies would be completely unprofitable, so nobody would be able to make or willing to fund them. The best you could hope for is home videos shot on smartphones.

The original copyright laws served that purpose. If it were more like that, which lasted a short yet reasonable amount of time instead of the bastardization that lobbying has turned it into, it would be a good thing for society (initial exclusivity incentivizes putting in effort, afterwards becomes a basis for derivative works and therefore progress).

I'd like to make a suggestion for future streaming: Streets of Fire. If Blade Runner was Bubblegum Crisis' techie daddy, Streets of Fire was its wild-girl rocker-mom.
The opening scene from the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arxD3Ro9mAk

Although I personally believe copyright should only be for 10 years which is a crazy amount of time to establish a market and dominate, copyright didn't imagine a digital world. Films, books, music, games, designs can be replicated in no time and spread all over the world in seconds/minutes. Fighting against this is a waste of time and resources. There needs to be a change of mindset for these things. Creatives should expect their works to be copied because there's no barrier to doing it. They should instead focus on different ways to make money. I think what isn't talked about enough is the idea that humans like "official" or "canon" things. J.K.Rowling releasing a new Harry Potter novel will get WAY more sales than a randomer releasing a sequel. The actual story/writing doesn't matter. It's because it's "official" and "canon". The randomer's story may have fewer mistakes and it may be more interesting but that doesn't matter.
There needs to be a mindset that you can't get every possible milligram of financial value out of your creations. You can however get a lot. But this just devolves into a conversation about capitalism.

As a follow up, the only actual fundamental right "intellectual property" and copyright should give a creator is the right to say that they are the creator. That should be enough to have many people give money to that creator.

>the right to say that they are the creator.
You don't need copyright to tell people that you made something. Most copyright licenses also require other people to tell people that you made it (right to attribution), which is in my view unnecessary but admittedly one of the least objectionable things about copyright.

You inspired me to cuddle up with my cat and re-watch this for the first time in years last night btw, thanks for the recommendation. I forgot how much McCoy rules lol
Now all I want is a nice old Studebaker and a lever-action rifle

Thanks! Someone suggested the movie to me a few weeks ago. It really is something special. And yeah, McCoy is totally awesome.
A lot of filmmakers could take lessons in worldbuilding from this movie. Without a bunch of clumsy exposition, and just through sets, costumes, and lighting (my god, the lighting!) you feel like you've been living in this world your whole life and know how it all works.
