>>6188 Just keep grinding, man. I consistently trained and studied drawing during most of my youth, but later lost the habit and will to do it, for many reasons. But I recently got inspired to start again by something as simple as a worldbuilding idea. It's just one project at the moment, but it's personal and it's something concrete to work towards. Hopefully I rebuild my momentum, as visual art is always what I've been best at.

Drifter · 2021-04-02 14:53
I walked into a chinese restaurant, listening to hiphop (Aesop Rock - Garbage), and walked out with a spiritual experience. As a side note, one of the most cyber forms of art is the simplistic art done for mexi/chinese/italian/indian/bars/etc, as still a 'individual shop' and not another chain, still a shop. So, what imma do is for my personal website, have some similar art as icons and banners. Thoughts?

What's the best way to learn how to draw, anon? Should I just accept I'll never draw decent anime-style things, as a 23 year old with no experience?
Cowboy · 2021-10-10 14:46
>>8589 1. Draw above your skill level. Don't worry if the end result ends up looking like crap for now 2. Look over your drawing and try to figure out where it needs improving. You don't need to be too thorough here; just focus on the big picture stuff that jumps out at you immediately. It helps if you compare your work to the stuff you're trying to emulate, since it gives a clearer idea of how it "should" look versus how it does. 3. Repeat the process from step 1, but this time go out of your way to compensate for the things you noticed in step two. So for example, let's say you're drawing an anime girl. You don't know what you're doing so it obviously looks bad. After that, you put your crappy anime girl drawing next to art from a manga. In comparing them, you notice that you drew the eyes way too close together and the limbs way too short. So then you draw another anime girl, but this time, you draw her eyes way further apart and her limbs way longer. It still looks like crap, but less-so than the last one because you've avoided making the same mistakes you did before. Repeat this process over and over again, and you'll see a ton of improvement. Also, remember to keep ramping up the ambition. Once your drawings start looking good, it's time to start doing harder stuff so they start looking like crap again. It's easy to get stuck in the trap of "my drawings look good now and doing this new thing makes them look bad" and stagnate. If you want to keep improving, you need to challenge yourself. This only applies to practice drawings by the way; the stuff you put in sketchbooks and the like. With "real" drawings, you can do whatever you want. What matters is that you push outside of your comfort zone while practicing. Unrelated to that, look up reference and tutorials as you need them. If you just go through a how to draw book and copy all of its exercises, you're not going to have a very good idea of how to apply the knowledge to a real drawing, and none of its teachings will sink in. It's better if you figure things out on a by-need basis. Look up how to draw eyes when you can't figure out how to draw an eye. Look up images of legs when you can't quite remember how a leg looks. Etc. The most important thing is that you learn by doing. It's the only way to ever truly get good as an artist.

>>10356 I thought it was more that the head was too big? But I kind of leant into that intentionally after accidentally doing it. Maybe there was more wrong there than I thought >>10358 Does traditional graphite mean something specific? I just used a pencil - I don't know what I'm doing. I really wanted to go for one of those narrative images Sounds like it is a lost cause to improve, I'll just leave it. It feels like the same sort of problems from some earlier attempts. I need to decide whether I should try to fix my proportion/perspectives when not drawing with a reference or just do other things with my time.
Cypher · 2023-02-11 08:58
>>10363 By “traditional graphite“ I just mean with pencils and not drawing in digital software. And I didn’t mean you should call your art a lost; I just meant you should’ve ironed out potential mistakes before committing to all that detail — if it were me, I wouldn’t dare erase any of that just because of a few mistakes that get overshadowed by the sheer amount of detail anyway. It’s kind of a negative take, but speaking from experience, traditional media does kind of require a certain amount of the “I’ll just make it worse if I do x“ state of mind — which is why so many professional artists will recommend thumbnails, gesture and figure-building skills.
Shogun · 2023-02-11 16:04
>>10364 Oh I didn't mean to sound gloomy about it - I did ask for the criticism :) I'm sort of iterating about some ideas as with these previous attempts (weird stretchy back was before weird engorged shoulder) - it isn't efficient but I have a hard time enjoying doing the thumbnails/gesture stuff. I'm not above going over it with digital stuff - thinking about it, I might try that way. Maybe that can change the "I'll just make it worse if I do x" to "I'll fix it in post". I might look into how I might mimic the pre-existing graphite stuff in krita or something. Anyone done something like that?

J. "Limber Beard of Appendages" Sm. · 2023-05-08 15:37
Well, as suggested, we began constructing raised fires with the greenwood we carried into the marsh, to ward off the aggressive mosquitoes. Our guide assured we would be across the sodden waste before we fell upon true night, so we rested though it was twilight. I had wandered off to relieve myself when I stumbled over what first I took as tree roots, but discovered instead to some befuddlement I had tripped over a cephalopod that lay there amongst the muck. Imagine my cry of bewilderment, then, as it casually raised itself out of the mud-water with its limber beard of appendages, revealing a mammalian body attached to its head! The men behind me stirred, but the guide only laughed upon seeing my trouble. The creature stared past me at our fires before voicing its complaint at me and leaping away. We came back the next day to marvel. The locals call them "Cthnuckluck", which Turneck translated roughly to "stupid foot". Their cries are like the sound of creaking wood, made punctually as they lay in the mud. They bound about on hind legs with padded, splayed feet, and share a form and disposition not unlike a hound, if an unsettling one. Tame, though they gecked harshly at the incautious among our group who strayed too close. For the comic strangeness with which it walks and talks, the armsmen took to calling it the venerable Squidgegecker...

>>10647 Thankyou, made me smile. That's the vibe I wanted them to have. Maybe I'll make some other creatures and put em up, I want to build an unsettling but soft world someday. >>11137 Looks good Lain! It isn't the same, but you are not Tkmz. You are you, make art that makes you happy! You have very solid and proper lines, which give your art a more permanent feel. It makes your drawing more absolute. "This is a lain." Tkmz always looks like the art style is emotionally rendered, I love the crude lines and exagerated expressions of that art. This comes across as very transient, like a feeling that happens and then passes. Tkmz also has a lot of fish imagery which adds a distinct flair. Many of the stories illustrated by tkmz also deal with that feeling of transience, so naturally the art would reflect that. the emotions the characters feel are not permanent. I wish I could find the tkmz lain for comparison.

I think old book illustrations were done in 2 steps, first doing the lineart and then the coloring, after that the lineart was put onto the colored version (for more contrast maybe I don't know). It's sad to see how this simple approach somewhat got lost since many drawings are now done digital. I like Witch Hat Atelier a lot for its simple yet detailed style. Not sure if this is the right thread but let me know if it isn't. Did a little study in oil after an existing painting but I am quite satisfied with how it turned out and what I learned from it. Supposedly the original artist is from the circle of Honoré Daumier, it is a very playful way of painting with an academic foundation, it is a way of painting that appeals to me.

Just a couple things ive done recently, feedback is appreciated, im new to digital art
Jeremiah Prime · 2025-04-19 12:34
>>10301 I don't think anything on it needs fixing, it has quite a wonderful style already, if anything I'd say just keep drawing. >>8631 This is all very good advice, I'll add one very handy trick as well. If you're working on something and it doesn't look quite right or even when you do think it's looking pretty good. Hold it up to a mirror and look at it reversed, all the sudden you will see all kinds of mistakes and off things about it. It can suck sometimes, but very useful. >>12389 I think this is quite lovely. Here are a couple of mine, two are finished paintings, the other is a cobbled together sketch of a piece that was just too ambitious and likely never to be done. Partly because when put together it's about 7 feet wide.
Jeremiah Prime · 2025-04-19 12:39
>>12452 Mistake on the first one, I only posted a cropped one The goal of these was for people to see the world by a new perspective and think about the interconnected nature of reality. Most people did not like them very much.

Quick sketch of Rincewind the (very inept) wizard, from the Discworld novels.
J.C. Denton · 2025-04-27 11:45
>>12454 These are great; the dynamic perspective and high level of details work well to draw in the viewer. I have been focusing on refining my process... Trying to avoid my tendency to fixate on the destination to the exclusion of enjoying the journey. Art is fun for me. I am glad I do not to need or want to monetize it.

>>12543 If you made sure the contours of the negative space were right, your hourglass sketch would had turned out a lot better. It's sad because that hourglass is a perfect item to practice negative space awareness, but you sort of bumbled it, afaict. I like the cross hatching.

>>12546 Wow thanks I'm never posting again
Crash Override · 2025-04-28 06:00
>>12547 i dont think that anon meant to critique you harshly, it comes over as rather constructive i would think. dont take it too hard! it's about fun foremost, right? i like the kitty one quite a bit, it's cute!
Jeremiah Prime · 2025-04-30 14:21
>>12543 Thank you for the kind words. Drawing the viewer in was the main goal, but it makes them kind of lack focus which is maybe why it ended up turning most people off. Here's a random few of my older things that I think were better overall Anyway, I really like your styie! The hatching is very expressive, it gives me impressionist vibes. I highly encourage just continuing what you're doing. I also encourage not trying to monetize it unless that's something that really calls to you. I think some people can monetize their art, but I think it changes things. Trying to turn art which was once a passion into a job ultimately kind of killed it. I know some people can separate the two, but depending on why you feel called to make art it can also go very awry.

>>10858 been about a year and some change since I drew these, it's actually kind of embarrassing that these are still here but oh well
Nameless · 2025-05-12 05:58
>>12563 Well, I didn't want to sound negative, but I do see how a casual viewer would be overwhelmed and give up on looking. Even in your older work, the details and overall composition are solid. I think that if you add more of a range of tones, it can help give the eye of the viewer more direction, and encourage places for the eye to rest on its journey. Something that really helps with tonal range, for me, is to first, convert the image to black and white. Then you can see where your values need to be darker vs where they should be lighter. You have a good understanding of where the shadows would be in space; exaggerating the difference to incorporate a bit of "chiaroscuro" would really make things "pop".

nailing down an outfit design for a comic I'll never get round to making. Some of you are really good. Do any of you bother with nightshading your work before posting? thought about doing it with this one but I'm on an x200 rn and it barely seems worth it

Honestly, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books were great. The first five/six at least, which were basically just snippets taken from the 1000+ page webcomic. It's very different as an adult. I get the humor a lot more. It's also so much more obvious how self-centered Greg is, but also how this is often the direct cause of his woes; and then compared to Rowley, who he believes isn't like a teenager should be, yet by his own metrics is far more successful as the wholesome, honest boy he is. It's unfortunate that I was a dullard who totally missed the point, and started wearing my backpack with one strap.

My white whale is some day learning how to draw like Yasuhiro Nightow. I'm practicing, and soon I'll have to really put my nose to the grindstone, but for now my efforts are on other projects

I don't draw a whole lot. Sometimes I've thought to make a webcomic, yet I feel I'd fall into the traps that make 95% of other webcomics so awful. I'm not very funny either. I did draw at a point. Drew every day for just under six months, produced two surprisingly good portraits, and then one day stopped. I don't even know why. I wonder if I should start it back up.

Kinda soykaf fanart of Kennith Simmons that I drew in mspaint; GaP fans, rise!, 'turn the volume up and spin around in the opposite direction!'. Mspaint's max zoom is 800%, which is annoying, and it doesn't preserve layers upon exiting the application. Idk if this'll appear small.

Motivation can't get you much farther than a week before it starts to wane (because it turns out getting good at anything requires one to sift through quite a lot of discomfort and uncertainty). Also, consume educational art resources and practice regularly.
