I love documentaries and have been really into Aum Shirinkyo and other "new religions" lately. Aum's music is really nice and cozy.
Anyway, I wonder if lain could help me in finding the two documentaries about them directed by Tatsuya Mori, they seem really interesting but I can't find them anywhere not even legally.

I got you fam. They are by far some of the best documentaries I've ever seen in my entire life. The filmmaker is extremely neutral but by the end of it you end up empathizing entirely with what is really just an ragtag group of esoteric buddhists that are endlessly harassed by the media.
I'm 99% sure they were put in public domain by the director? Japanese public domain law is really weird, so I think the category they are in is what westerners would call public domain?

I should say I don't mean I think they are great because of the cult. The films are ostensibly about the cult but really they are about how the media distorts reality and the court of public opinion. It is really interesting to see this in light of people who claim that cancel culture is a modern phenomena, when in reality it has always existed, and this film is one example of the effects it has. Even amongst some of the most cancelled people on earth there is still an air of hope and humanity present throughout.
The film just makes you really really hate media and journalism, and shows that even on issues that seem like they really should be extremely clear cut (death cult bad!!) there is always more to the story than the media narrative.

I recently spent literally one night long binge watching the videos propaganda of the infamous cult.

wanted to comment on the terrorists, but the other lains beat me to it.
They also experimented with anthrax and it is suspected that they started to express interest in nuclear weapons to try to help with their death cult objectives. Poor Australian sheep...
If this is a documentary thread, I would like to throw in the ones by Werner Herzog in the mix. His one on the people at Antarctica was breddy shway.

I think it's entirely reasonable to "cancel" a group who attempted mass murder but whatever.
