Glitch Art Thread

Judge Fang · 2020-03-09 05:53
There used to be a glitch art thread around here or am I crazy? Anyway I'll start a new one. I've been messing around with audacity and hex values for some time. I think it's getting boring. I did some things with video files too, but they are all in MP4.

So, how much of y'all's glitch art is databending vs manual edits?
Hououin Kyouma · 2020-03-11 05:25
>>5271 OP here and the only one posting lol I usually do the databending and throw the files on GIMP and just pick different layer modes. This generates lots of different results for the same databent files. As for the videos it's just databending.
Unnamed · 2020-03-11 12:17
op, this is fuarrrking awesome here's a piece I found long time ago (through archillect I thinkk)
Jean Dupont · 2020-03-11 13:38
>>5272 the third image is my favorite because you can really see the DCT basis functions. when you say databending, do you mean chopping things up in a hex editor, or were you using scripts (or audacity)? >GIMP gimp is so good for this stuff but i wish the scripting/plugin system was more intuitive. i tend to hop back and forth between gimp and python/PIL.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2020-03-12 06:29
>>5274 >when you say databending, do you mean chopping things up in a hex editor, or were you using scripts (or audacity)? Mainly audacity and hex editor. I also like to convert files to raw formats and re-encode them with the wrong pixel format or image size (pic related). I never used scripts. I'm curious about messing with codecs and video feedback but I'm not sure how to start.
Yet Another Lainon · 2020-03-13 05:19
Just learned that I can put two videos together in Audacity. It creates a cool effect that could be explored further. One of the videos is a bit longer than the other because ffmpeg fuarrrked up when trimming them. Also, one of the videos is not full 720p so when I encoded them with the video size of 1280x720 it created this vertical film strip effect.

>>5275 >I'm curious about messing with codecs and video feedback but I'm not sure how to start. ffmpeg for codecs. i can't give much more specific advice because its a bit outside my wheelhouse but i've been ehh "glitch-adjacent" for a while so i know the guys who do a lot with codecs tend to be ffmpeg wizards. this guy is one of the best imo https://github.com/itsKaspar for video feedback type stuff it depends on if you're talking about analog or digital. analog i think most people use tachyons+ gear (https://tachyonsplus.com/) and old broadcasting equipment. for digital it's usually processing (https://processing.org/) but the real ones write proper shaders.

>>5278 Wow, thanks for the knowledge. >>5280 >ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -f rawvideo -pix_fmt yuv420p result.yuv Will generate a raw file so you can work with it on Audacity. >ffmpeg -f rawvideo -video_size 1280x720 -pix_fmt yuv420p -i input.raw output.mp4 Will convert the raw file back to video. Make sure you use the right video size (or don't). You can mess with the raw file on Audacity like described on that "The Art of The Glitch" article on Lainzine 4. Also, you can use a hex editor to mess around with the video. Make sure you don't break it too much tho.

Went a bit more abstract now. Just discovered a great library in ruby called pnglitch and a thing called pixel sorting. It's pretty nice playing around with it. The pictures where all gathered on random 4shared folders.
Random · 2020-06-21 02:58
I tried my hand at making some glitch art today. I'm satisfied with this, but only because it's not terrible. I think i'll try to pick this up as a hobby; I'd really like to make something worth using for my wallpaper. I can't believe it's possible to get such clean glitch art as in so many of the pics above. It took a lot of fiddling around to get this image in both the colors I wanted and to be relatively clear.

I once heard a story of a man who took an oath with no intention of keeping it. He borrowed from a neighbor before traveling to a nearby province to do business. As Our Man began his journey out the great city's gates he stopped to admire the sun rise. For his great city was nested along a cliff face Here came upon the acquaintance of an gaunt traveler of indetenimant age who as it happened was both admiring the sunriseand heading the same direction. Amicable, they elected to travel together. After Several sunsets and shared meals the man begun to notice things about his fellow traveler. A light and intensity in his gaze, fortitude and energy well beyond his frail body. Our Man had struggled to keep pace with his cohort. "You are not mortal" said Our Man one morning as they unmade camp. "Aye" grunted the traveler "May I ask who It is I walk with?" The traveler spoke without looking up from his pack "I am Horkos. Son of Strife. I travel seeking to inflict my curse upon the wicked" Wide shot terror skipped through the circulatory system of Our Man. "I see. And when will do you plan on returning to my fair city?" Horkos looked up from his pack. "Thirty, maybe Forty years. I have Lots of ground to cover" Terror drained into the ground beneath Our Man. He was safe. “I suppose that would be the case. Never thought of it that way. What an interesting life you must lead" "You would have to speak with my brother Logoi if you wish to hear of exploits" Our Man and Horkos parted ways soon after. He spent a season in the province buying and selling with the borrowed resources of his neighbor and then returned to his city. His neighbor inquired about the return of the borrowed and reminded our man of his oath. But Our Man openly and fervently denied any such thing had ever happened and then hired guards to beat his neighbor. That very night Horkos returned. dragging Our Man by his hair from his bed and out of the city gate. "You said you wouldn't be back for Thirty years!" "Aye. But when I am provoked I will return the same day to visit punishment upon an oathbreker" Then Horkos threw Our Man off the cliff.

Hi Lain, I haven't really done much in terms of glitching normal images at this point. However, I do happen to have a special - some would say "broken" - camera which makes interesting photos. It was a score resulting from my hoarding of Canon PowerShot A530's (I don't have a phone, so I need a designated camera). I'm not entirely sure why it does this, but it tends to make things pink and grainy overall, and gives bright areas a melt-y sort of look. I would certainly be interested in hearing if anyone has an idea why this happens. The photos are from the House On The Rock over in Spring Green, Wisconsin. I'd highly recommend going there to any lainon. It's as trippy a place as can be without looking intentional. The whole thing takes about six hours to really go through and gets more surreal with each hour.

HOTR 2/? One of the sections contains a massive sea monster. I recall that it's longer than the statue of liberty is tall, so the perspective isn't necessarily deceptive in the picture (though the model boat is only two meters tall, perhaps).
Apoc · 2022-05-25 22:44
HOTR 3/? They also have what is supposedly the "worlds largest" carousel. Lots of weird stuff on it, for sure. My favorite has always been the mermaids - they have beautiful eyes, but not much for a face. There's also a second smaller carousel which mostly contains dolls. The very top has a few wild figures, as well. I'm somewhat surprised they put the satyress on it, though maybe it's just the camera that makes me think it had a satanic vibe. ...I really hope I'm not spamming irrelevant posts... Also unsure if this would really be considered "unsafe", but I'll hide it anyway. Just a statue.
Nell · 2022-05-25 22:57
HOTR 4/~4 A few more. I have about thirty interesting ones, but I don't want to flood this thread with all of them before anyone even expresses interest. The last one isn't glitched, but it's relevant to the rest of my posts. It's two pictures taken about a foot or so apart, as if for a stereoscope, and turned into an animated GIF. It does a lot to give it a sense of depth. Neat stuff, I think.

>>9340 Thanks! I have no clue what could be done to modify a camera like that, but experimenting wouldn't be too costly. Most working A530's are essentially the cost of shipping - certainly less than $10 a piece.

HOTR 5/~9 At some point I'll try and make a few more 3D animated ones as well. I have a few glitched ones like that; although I can't say when I'll get around to it.

HOTR 6/~9 Something interesting about most of the large instruments in these photos is that most of them are automated. I think they used to be controlled by relay mechanisms, but I've heard they've been using computers to replace the mechanisms as they break. Most of the large stuff is actuated by pneumatic, so it hasn't been entirely modernized.
Naomi Nascimento · 2022-05-26 23:00
HOTR 7/~9 I've been trying to think of other places that have the right vibe to work well with this camera, but not much comes to mind. I suppose I haven't tried taking pictures of much normal stuff to really see how it turns out, though.

>>9376 I put it through my camera, so now it's official Glitch Art(tm), as it was in part produced by wigged out tech. Really though, this conversation makes me think that "Glitch Art" might be a bad name. It often is used to describe the aesthetic rather than the process by which the name came about. To have an umbrella term --- "Distortion Art" or similar --- may be a solution.
re_l · 2022-06-09 15:30
>>9378 your words make sense, lainon. but after spending some time studying the topic, I can say that it’s enough just to remember the original meaning of the term. there is no need to produce essences, it is enough to point out to those who are mistaken that they are wrong. in fact, what I threw above can really be considered glitch art - these are distorted images. I was worried about my art being glitch art because in their case I used a program that specialized in creating glitches, and the process was controlled just like in any other photoredactor. however, now the doubts are gone, and I can safely post my works.
Jane Doe · 2022-06-10 22:26
>>9378 >>9387 I wonder about this too. I make edits on occasion, and sometimes I consider them to collages and mockups rather than glitch art even though the edits carries influence from it.

The trouble with Glitchart, as I see it, is that it's difficult to compose an image which represents more than just colorful noise. Noisy pixels are interesting for a little while, but then you start to look for an actual representation of something.
Shogun · 2023-01-13 19:22
If you open an image file in a text editor and add some random characters does it produce a glitch image or do you just get a corrupted file that will crash when you try to open it?

>>12567 This looks like a ton of fun. Using Audacity seems clunky though, surely there must be a way to use audio DSP via cmdline back out to image?
Bob Arctor · 2025-05-02 07:44
>>12570 If you're comfortable coding it's actually easier to do this kind of thing with python scripts (specifically using PIL). There's nothing special about the fact that they're audio effects; people just use Audacity because it has a GUI and is more approachable than GIMP. Anyway, most audio effects fall into one of three categories: saturation, modulation, or "echo". Saturation is your distortions, it does the same sort of thing as saturation in image editing software (specifically it's like editing color curves). Modulation is your filters and periodic effects. These mostly manifest as periodic shifts in color acroas the pixel raster. "Echo", which includes reverb, delay, etc. tends to be a more interesting effect because it results in pixel data being copied and composed over top of nearby data. Things on the reverb end will look more like a blur, while a perfect delay will look like a double exposure kind of. The algorithms are all quite simple, the trick is just knowing what they actually do to the data. But once you understand this, you can "translate" them to functions in traditional image editing software or python scripts. If you go with the former, this is the one and only time I actually recommend using GIMP. It is terrible at most things, but it has a ton of highly configurable filters (including the "general convolution" filter which lets you program in any kernel you want) which are great for making glitch art.
353cloud · 2025-11-03 23:44
>>7558 do these actually lead anywhere?
Tequila · 2026-01-26 02:04
FFT Inverse applied repeatedly (to innocuous images) will lead to... this. Runs into a cycle after n iterations (pic 3), depending on the seed image. Alpha is affected too. Doesn't look very digital though.
Joe Bloggs · 2026-01-26 03:44

I don't have a working computer right now. What happens if you change the file type of a JPEG and import it into a music editing software adding an audio effect like reverb then saving it and turning it back to a JPEG? Does that work or does it corrupt the whole file to be unable to be opened?
Lord Nikon · 2026-03-08 20:23
>>13114 on a JPEG it would wreck the whole file. You can do that but you should typically save the file as raw or something that is closer to raw than the hyper compressed and header dependant formats
cereal killer · 2026-03-09 05:00
>>13114 Whether or not the procedure you descried will corrupt the whole file depends 1. the file format you change it to 2. the region of the audio data you transform / change. The gist is that we don't want to corrupt the structural information of the file, only the color / pixel information. this is easiest to do with file formats that have small headers and no checksums, like windows bitmap. The amount and location of structural information varies with the file type. The most reliable way to data bend without manually repairing files is to research and choose a file type ahead of time that you understand, and know how to avoid damaging the structural information of. For me, this is windows bitmap. I always convert files to bitmap before i run them through audacity. TL;DR use bitmap, avoid deleting data, only transform it.
