Why did they do it like this? This CG anime thing is just bullshit. I didn't though they would do this to fuarrrking GITS, but quick money is more important than anything I guess. Also, the design looks like it was made to be a kids show or a mobile game.

>I didn't though they would do this to fuarrrking GITS, but quick money is more important than anything I guess. Any link for this? >Also, the design looks like it was made to be a kids show or a mobile game. Promoting transhumanism among kids would be actually pretty good.

New Code Lyoko season?
Zhora · 2019-12-01 01:09
For some reason I don't mind a lot of early CG like malice doll or blue submarine. I have a hard time thinking of why, because I'm not very fond of it in current anime. The one exception predictably being Houseki no Kuni, but I don't really think that counts. Their usage was pretty much opposite the cheapshit use in every other show, where they seem hellbent to do in CG what CG does worst. Anyway, I'm disappointed, too. Arise was so bland I accidentally rewatched it without realizing, and now this.
Frank Garza · 2019-12-01 13:47
>>4399 Weirdly, I think Malice Doll still holds up. Since the characters are all broken-down robots or corrupted organic/robotic nightmare hybrids, the low-res jerky-movement uncanny-valley primitive CGI actually works for them.

>Why did they do it like this? It's cheaper, and some properties like this just don't command a lot of budget in today's anime industry. The industry has changed a whole lot in the past decade or so. It's kind of nasty, I know, but a lot of people complain about it in a way that's a huge overreaction imo. This is just how you're going to get some shows because that's what they had on hand. Just try to enjoy it best you can, or else ignore it. After a little while of not constantly raging over it, it becomes a lot less noticeable and you can start to look past it and have fun again. >>4399 I also think the old-school CG stuff holds up better. Not sure what it is about it.
Faye Valentine · 2019-12-02 22:46
>>4396 >quick money is more important than anything I guess. I don't see how there is any quick money being made here. >Also, the design looks like it was made to be a kids show or a mobile game. Nothing about it suggests either of those. Adult anime is full of very cute designs, and mobile games generally use ordinary hand-drawn art. >>4407 >properties like this just don't command a lot of budget in today's anime industry One of the greatest productions this year is an original sports and drama anime (Hoshiai no Sora): https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=hoshiai_no_sora Meanwhile Azur Lane which is based on a hugely popular mobile game just looks mediocre.
Yuki Nagato · 2019-12-02 23:02
>>4409 I think moe motivates good budgets through ways that are kind of alien compared to western IPs where using references to other forms of pop culture/reboots is a reliable way to generate a ton of budget. Anime referencing existing IPs usually doesn't actually get a lot of funding.
Mentat · 2019-12-02 23:05
>>4409 Oh and also Netflix are a bunch of stupid stingy bastards. Tech companies can't do anything other than savagely cut costs. It's the way their stupid business models work. Burn money at a ludicrous rate in a years-long bid to seize a monopoly, and if that doesn't happen then you start cutting your budgets until the company dies because the VCs only make money on growth and not steady business, so they hatchet everything to ensure they make back their speculative vulture investments.
Miho Iwakura · 2019-12-02 23:26
>>4411 It's not really about budget. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88qvfSLBMiU Original anime might possibly have better quality on average because they're more carefully planned, while adaptations might be decided on and put into production very quickly with lackluster scheduling and staff. There's also fewer original anime than adaptations. >>4412 Netflix apparently spends a lot of money on anime. This is brought up in the above video.
Trinity · 2019-12-03 04:34
>>4414 Hmm, interesting. Good points. I have noticed that a lot of Netflix-produced animation is CGI as well. Sidonia and Blame! for example.
Chani · 2019-12-03 14:50
Honestly I think it's a good casual filter. Most people will go "but it ugly!" and skip it when GitS has never been about the visual aspects of it but rather the philosophical and psychological themes. I couldn't care less if it looked like ass as long as the story is a proper GitS story. The original GitS manga looked awful and cartoony as soykaf but the underlying narrative was godlike and that's what launched the whole franchise in the first place. The inverse is also true, the ScarJo GitS movie looks visually stunning but the story is awful and it doesn't deserve to be called GitS.
Ender · 2019-12-03 15:56
>>4424 Wait, what now? Masamune shirow manga looks awful? No way bud, he's one of the all-time classic comic book artists. Other than that, agreed; I don't really care if it's CGI, and if Hollywood makes another crappy anime live-action reboot and casts Johansson I'm gonna take a big greasy ѕһіt right in the middle of the theater.
Linda Lee · 2019-12-08 02:30
>>4426 >Wait, what now? Masamune shirow manga looks awful? No way bud, he's one of the all-time classic comic book artists. The best thing that ever happened to Masamune Shirow's reputation was Mamoru Oshii. People who regard Shirow as some sort of storytelling genius are generally people who never read the original GITS manga - a confused mess of half-assed plots, internal world-building inconsistencies, and room-temperature-IQ characters. Everything good related to GITS can be traced directly to Oshii's salvaging of the old manga into a coherent story with interesting characters. Shirow eventually became a really good artist, but he never became even a passable storyteller. There's a reason that SAC leaned heavily on Oshii's characterizations of Section 9's serious professionals, instead of the goofy-ass morons that Shirow wrote who happened to share the same names.
Anamika · 2019-12-08 04:28

>>4424 >GitS has never been about the visual aspects of it Wow, now you're just straight up crazy, my dude. GitS has the most original and beautiful visual styles I've ever seen on a cyberpunk universe. It captures the true cyberpunk idea while still looking realistic. I still think CGI is absolute bullshit. It doesn't feel alive, it's lazy and cheap and it's killing the anime industry, in my opinion.

The new trailer is out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIqzdn-Gjwk Motoko can dance with bullets, the main villain is Anakin, Section 9 will be disbanded again and the plot is about a Post-Human (like cyborgs aren't already post-humans but ok). I'm totally not hyped for it.

>>4944 There's actually a faint hope that this might turn out not to be crap. The two lead writers are Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki. Kamiyama wrote most of SAC and 2nd Gig, and was not involved in any way with Arise or the live movie. Aramaki was on the writing staff for every episode of the classic cyberpunk series Bubblegum Crisis. I'm willing to set aside my dislike of the art style and the action-ey trailers and watch at least the few few episodes, based on the strength of this writing team.
Tank · 2020-02-02 17:33
>>4946 >The two lead writers are Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki. Kamiyama wrote most of SAC and 2nd Gig, and was not involved in any way with Arise or the live movie. Since the time 2nd Gig was made, Kamiyama has a list of writing credits on legitimately badly written things with nothing very redeeming. Aramaki hasn't done anything interesting since BBC. They've been successful in the industry in mass market terms, but for direction and writing, nothing they have credits on has been nearly as interesting as the two GiTS tv series or their prior mecha/scifi work. The past 15 or 16 years of their work history doesn't give anyone much confidence. Consider the fact they did their best work on 80's and 90's mecha series while very young and then consider the fact that they are both over 50 years old now.
Hagbard Celine · 2020-02-02 20:49
>>4947 Maybe you could be right. I haven't bothered watching much anime for the past decade or so. All I'm saying is that there's at least a chance of this new series not being a total soykafshow, unlike if - for example - the Arise production team were coming back to work on it.
H.R. Giger · 2020-02-03 05:04

I'm pretty disappointed in the direction they've gone. Arise was acceptable quality, though lacking in story (and reinventing, the sign of a dead series). This iteration shows they're in it just for the money. Hollywood got its fingers into the owners of this franchise with their disgusting version (complete disrespect for the source material, and a tragic misuse (or lack thereof) of Beat Takeshi's talents). The thing is, they've been going down this road for a long long long time. The original movie was great (fuarrrk "2.0" for reasons you'll soon see). Innocence was ok, but used some hideous CG animation in places (and this was retrofitted into the original as "2.0"). The series was pretty good, actually closer to the tone of the source material (more comedy). Quality was decent. Everything beyond that has been a cashin, hollywood style.

Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2020-04-30 15:14
>>5696 >I can't understand how the same guy that made SAC and 2nd GIG fuarrrked up so bad It's been close to 15 years since SAC ended. A lot of the talent that made it moved on to other projects and are preoccupied with other things at the moment and the people that are making it now clearly don't understand what made the original good. It's the perennial problem with reboots and sequels to successful older franchises.

I watched the first episode of this, wont be watching anymore. They got some blue haired woman who did voice acting on sailor moon to come in on writing. Its dumbed down, normally with GITS I have to concentrate to get my head round it. However I found out there's a new feature length one and Arise episodes. Just pretend this series doesnt exist I think.
Wintermute · 2020-05-07 11:00
>>4396 CGI is just such an inferiour artform to 2D animation. >>5706 Well that and suits decide that to make it better you need to make it flashier and follow bad modern trends and tropes while just blatently nicking as much from the old thing as possible. The upsetting part of this, to me, is that Ilya Kuvshinov (the visual/character designer for this show) is a really great artist. Their art style is more suited to a chill, slice-of-life style, however. and I feel like their talents were misrepresented here. It would be like putting Angela He in charge of a Blade Runner adaptation.
