ITT - post documentaries. Can be about tech, humanity, nature, art, or anything else really. I've posted links to streams, but you can also post magnet links/torrent hashes.

>In The Age Of A.I. (2019), 1h 54m - Fantastic documentary, albeit very unsettling. It presents a great look at AI, and it also talks about automation, wealth inequality, data-mining, surveillance, and the growing rivalry between the U.S. and China.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjs3hsIFCHw
>Poisoning America: The Devil We Know (2018), 1h 28m - How 3M and DuPont made billions by exposing the entire world to a toxic chemical which causes cancer and birth defects and is now found in the blood of 99.7% of Americans.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5cl0GjPjy4
>China: A Century Of Revolution (1997) - Part one of an incredible 6 hour documentary covering the CCP and the Republic of China, Taiwan, and everything in between.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLHmo95OD9g
>The Secret Lives of Chinese Rappers (2017), 22m - This atmospheric film follows a group of Chinese rappers through the streets of Chongqing, one of China’s largest cities, as they discuss life in the surveillance state as marginalized musicians.

>Simon Schama's Power of Art Episode 3, Rembrandt (2006) 58m - One of my favourite art documentaries. You can view the other (mislabeled) episodes as well as other documentaries by clicking "Go back" in the above link - it's some sort of semi-open directory.

It's amazing how he can create the feeling of being in another world just using images from our planet.

HyperNormalisation (2016)
https://thoughtmaybe.com/hypernormalisation/
directed by Adam Curtis at 2:46:31 long
"HyperNormalisation wades through the culmination of forces that have driven this culture into mass uncertainty, confusion, spectacle and simulation. Where events keep happening that seem crazy, inexplicable and out of control"
I really enjoyed this doco, not sure how much is crazy speculation and how much is really good speculation. Great soundtrack too.

>not sure how much is crazy speculation and how much is really good speculation.
my reading of the film is that it's not speculation but just a reasonably good analysis of historic events. whether or not the <present day, present time> was the intended effect of these historical figures' actions back then, adam curtis really accurately describes the real material effects they have today.
a few of his other films are on that site as well, but not all of them are as interesting or accurate as hypernormalization imo. adam curtis is one of my favorite filmmakers still.

While I found this really funny, I think its obvious that documentaries appeal to the emotions and, intentionally or not, use editing and music ect. to further their point rather than proper argumentative justification and sources. Your going to have to deliver your arguments in the driest, rhetoric free, logical text to avoid it.
Some people seem to think this is not self evident and pointing it out is some kind of "inform" and exposing the filmmaker for a fraud. This is juvenile.

haha yes its just a joke
i like his documentaries there are really well made and touch on some subjects that are otherwise not very well shown
He does however go for some grand narratives and is unavoidable that some mistakes will be made and attract critisism. And while i,too, have found some things that i dont like, overall i agree with him.

right, documentaries aren't academic works or records, they're films first and foremost. criticizing documentaries from that angle is almost always from people who think the intent of a documentary is to be an authoritative record and text, which reveals the disconnections in their line of thinking about those criticisms.
though I think people who feel betrayed that documentaries have to artistically deliver narratives are actually driven to thinking that way not of their own faults but because general media has an effect of conditioning and disciplining people into certain consumption habits. people can sense that their lived reality isn't represented accurately in media, but there is no easily accessible media that explains why. so they demand a dry explanation of the world through the only media available to them. but they can't sit though the dry conference talk or academic journal (normal, acceptable reaction for non-academics, imo), and the contradiction in their mind deepens.

These guys made a documentary about online content moderators. Haven't seen it yet, but it looks good... but also disturbing, given the subject matter. Here's their TED talk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4FrxvHJlKw
>Millions of images and videos are uploaded to the internet each day, yet we rarely see shocking and disturbing content in our social media feeds. Who's keeping the internet "clean" for us? In this eye-opening talk, documentarians Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck take us inside the shadowy world of online content moderators -- the people contracted by major platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google to rid the internet of toxic material. Learn more about the psychological impact of this kind of work -- and how "digital cleaning" influences what all of us see and think.

>The Century of the Self (2002) - How Sigmund Freud's ideas about the unconscious mind have been used by those in power to control the masses in an age of democracy.
Holy shıt, where to start with this? It's like staring directly at the code of the Matrix. The documentary is about the rise and transformation of psychoanalysis, and how it subsequently created the modern landscape of consumerism, planned obsolescence, propaganda, and much more. In my opinion, it's not a stretch to say that this should be required viewing for everyone.
It's led me to think - the creators and propagators of these ideas are still convinced that you cannot appeal to the reasonable side of the masses, but rather their emotions, egoistic whims, and subconscious desires. It's obviously worked brilliantly for the past 100 years, but how much of it is because society has already been conditioned to act like this? Would it be impossible to have a society where people's decisionmaking is overwhelmingly led by reason?
I don't really know, but it's definitely not possible when the exact opposite is constantly being propagated and enabled. And people in power obviously wouldn't want it if it threatens profit (consumerism) and political positions (populism).
It also leads me to think where we're headed, in the context of today's mass data collection for advertising and surveillance. Not only are these ideas and methods even more relevant 100 years later, the whole system is now basically on steroids and made it even harder to escape its' influence. Social media is basically a 24/7 focus group about everything, all the time. A well oiled machine that not only identifies people's thoughts and feelings towards everything, but creates and manages their thoughts and feelings about everything as well.
In a broader historical context, I wonder if some of this is really new? Is this appeal to emotion and desire for the purpose of control/profit now in the same role that religion previously occupied in society? Is it an inevitable end-point in society?

I'll have to watch that later. As soon as I realised the media companies and social media companies were essentially one company all acting in unison, I lost any faith in the mainstream. Essentially everything important thats happening is coming from the top down for the benefit of the 1%. Relevacy and importance has noting to do with what's fed into our brains constantly. Hense why we have all these dipshit normal people blabbing on about the oscars while Jeffery Epsteins friends at the corporations rape their kids, rive down their living standards and destroy their communities

Thanks for the link. But the section about Occupy near the end made me question how accurate the rest of the commentary prior to that was. Adam Curtis describes how Occupy was basically some sort of nutty anarchist troublemaking collective that had no coherent demands, when that's the furthest thing from the truth. The Occupy protesters had several very clear and coherent demands:
- Decoupling of investment banks from commercial banks (the kind you and I use) by reinstating Glass-Steagall, which was enacted in the shadow of the Great Depression to stop the very kind of collapse that 2008 saw.
- The suspension of mortgage-default evictions until the financial crisis was over. Many of those evictions were fraudulent and basically allowed banks (especially Bank of America) to steal homes from people would not normally be at legal risk of eviction. But the chaos of the whole situation led to massive oversight failure that allowed the banks to get away with it.
- The criminal prosecution of the Wall Street insiders who architected for their own benefit the ultra-complex ultra-unstable financial products (like credit default swaps) that directly brought on the 2008 collapse.
- Denial of tax breaks and financial aid to companies that refused to re-shore jobs in the US.
If Curtis got so much of this wrong, how much else did he get wrong? How much can I trust what was laid out in the first 9/10ths of the movie? And were those errors negligent or deliberate? Both this movie and his career have largely involved the BBC. Let's not forget how deeply tied the BBC is to the British establishment, which itself basically is the British financial sector. Not only did he wrongly portray Occupy, but he basically glossed over the entire 2008 financial collapse. I find it difficult to give Curtis the benefit of the doubt here.

This is really interesting, thanks. Fun fact for the camera nerds out there: ABe uses a Sigma Quattro when he's out in the world capturing ideas for his work. For the non-camera-nerds, this line of cameras uses a fascinating alternative type of sensor that allows for greatly increased detail, but at numerous other technical costs. It gives me a warm glow to know that this man who contributed to a strange wonderful idiosyncratic story uses a strange wonderful idiosyncratic camera.

Guthrie · 2020-07-31 19:31
Documentaries have an awful tendency to be very disingenuous. Whatever the documentarian wants to say becomes the film generally. This is done through editing, pointed questions, and so on. Honestly, I wouldn't believe a damn thing I saw on a documentary, too much room for bias and exploitation.

Connections by James Burke (1978)
https://archive.org/details/ConnectionsByJamesBurke/
"Connections explores an "Alternative View of Change" that rejects the conventional linear and teleological view of historical progress. Burke contends that one cannot consider the development of any particular piece of the modern world in isolation. Rather, the entire gestalt of the modern world is the result of a web of interconnected events, each one consisting of a person or group acting for reasons of their own motivations (e.g., profit, curiosity, religion) with no concept of the final, modern result to which the actions of either them or their contemporaries would lead. The interplay of the results of these isolated events is what drives history and innovation, and is also the main focus of the series." -Wikipedia

Does anyone have any recommendations for relaxing documentaries? I've been on a cult documentary kick lately and I'm looking for a change of pace.
My recommendations:
Into Great Silence(2005)
Its a look into the Grande Chartreuse monastery. The film has almost no dialog and is only shot using natural light. I'm not religious at all, but it's probably my favorite documentary.
Gothic King Cobra(2014)

This Curtis documentary introduced me into the subject of propaganda & social psychology. The influences & theories mentioned there were my starting point for studying related literature.
>I think its obvious that documentaries appeal to the emotions and, intentionally or not, use editing and music ect. to further their point rather than proper argumentative
Well, pic related. In my experience the obviousness is not present in most people I talk to.
For example, just last week I watched a Jimi Hendrix documentary & a Amy Winehouse documentary on the same evening with a friend, and this friend ended with the note (based on the documentaries): "similar kind of people; such geniuses, died so young, such a waste!" with something like how dying young is related to exceptional talent.
I replied with that I think its silly to compare someone's lives like that as a conclusion of your own, based on such limited material (or something similar). Especially since the documentaries themselves were full of those "downward spiral" narratives he presented as his own opinion. We ended up talking for 2 hours since he showed interest in my point of view, but when my argument got to the point of all media is essentially a form of censorship as formulated by Walter Lippmann in Public Opinion, and supported by the Propaganda Model introduced by Edward Herman & Noam Chomsky, plus like you said obviousness he went for (among others) the false dilemma fallacy and said that "if you go that far, there's nothing you can form an opinion on". I think because of the technicality and his aforementioned statement he didn't show interest in further discussion of topic... I think I should refrain from those kind of replies in the future.

I'm also looking for documentaries on cybercrime, especially the people behind it. Especially this point from the last video:
>"Each time you realize something in yourself, only then does it become yours. I, for instance, found out that when I read Jung, I can read his books 20 times and I don't keep them in mind, so to speak, by heart. But when I do some creative work, research work, and then read his books, and it ties in with what I am doing in my own work - then it clicks and then it stays forever. Then it's as if I had acquired it."
>"I've really gotten the point, but only when I have creatively worked out my own approach by getting out of the Animus, who would simply quote Jung, and quite apart from the Animus quoting Jung - what do I feel, what do I see, what have I experienced in my life, where am I? What can I say not because Jung says it, but because I know it myself too, for my own reasons? And only that is valid, the rest can be just forgotten again."
For example, at that I'd point I'd read and listened to a huge amount of material concerning the anima - I understood it as an strangely alluring but largely abstract concept. As I was also deeply infatuated, which was one of the things I was actively trying to understand, I was likely intuitively drawn to re-immerse myself in that topic until I finally really understood (and actually felt) how this concept existed within me, and was manifesting itself onto the person I was in love with.
And holy soykaf, it's trippy when an abstract concept like that finally clicks, and you feel how it describes powerful emotional experiences in unfamiliar parts of yourself.
As a quick intro to some Jungian concepts, here's some excerpts from "Man and His Symbols" with excellent visual material:

Just watched ’The Substance - Albert Hofmann's LSD' which is a great documentary about LSD, psilocybin and the history of psychedelic drugs. Albert Hofmann himself comments all of it (he died in 2008) and many other important figures from the early days of psychedelic experiences are given a voice in this documentary. I'd say it is pretty neutral as well, talking about the problems of widespread public drug use without precaution as well as the huge potential of such drugs.
It really makes me wonder if I should already try taking psilocybin mushrooms, I am just 19 and therefore worry about my brain being affected before being fully developed, on the other hand it is still about 6 years until most of the development has finished which is quite a long time, and I didn't even feel like my psyche or personality changed significantly over the last years. Another problem might be that I don't have friends interested in such stuff and it would probably not be responsible to trip without a sitter. The depression treatment for cancer patients looked quite interesting, where people where blindfolded during the whole trip. Not sure if that is preferable or going through nature being amazed by all the beauty you can see.
Anyways, if you want to watch the documentary, you can search youtube for it, there apparently are some versions in various languages, not in english however but I'm sure you can find in on your favorite torrent tracker (just as I did).

Personal favorite, as a big time fan of documentaries. It's a two-parter, running for 1hr and 2hrs respectively. It gets progressively more cyberpunk, tying the 1850's oil industry to smart cities and the IoT.
>How & Why Big Oil Conquered The World
>Oil. The 19th century was transformed by it. The 20th century was shaped by it. And the 21st century is moving beyond it. But who gave birth to the oil industry? What have they done with the immense wealth and power that it has granted them? And what are they planning to do with that power in a post-carbon world? This is the remarkable true story of the oiligarchs and the world they have created.

Thanks for sharing! Every time I see this dude on screen he's telling his soykaf compact & to the point. I have looked for his soykaf online once, but I did not find this one. Interesting guy.
I have recently been interested in war documentaries. A friend recommended
>This is what winning looks like (2013)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja5Q75hf6QI
I'm not much of a Vice guy, and I think the commentary is like kicking dead whales down the beach, but the footage is a ridiculous image of the cultural differences between afghan desert people and the US guys. Great fun.
Another war documentary I would recommend is
>Restrepo (2010)
Another documentary on the Afghan war in the Korengal valley where fighting was considerably worse than most stations. The filmmaker really risked his ass and it shows in the footage. Very interesting documentary. They made a follow up on the guys as well called Korengal (2014), but that did not equal the first one imo.
Well, last doc on war:
>Only the dead (2015)
Nice doc about a film maker's experience in the 2003 Iraq war
Feast your eyes answering the question of what mass killers are like
>The act of killing (2012)
And they did it by the hundreds and explain how and all the details one questions. This documentary is one of the best things I have seen ever. I think I have seen this documentary maybe 5 or 6 times, if not more. Fantastic story, amazingly told.

I'm not sure it counts as a documentary in the sense that you're talking about, but ''Man with a Movie Camera'' ('Человек с киноаппаратом', romanized: Chelovek's kinoapparatom) is interesting. It's a 1929 silent documentary film, ''mostly'' unscripted footage of Moscow, Kyiv and Odesa in 1929, showing a lot of day-to-day life. Modern critics have ranked it highly in lists of greatest films ever made, and it was certainly innovative for its time.
Link to full film - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Man_With_A_Movie_Camera_(Dziga_Vertov,_1929).webm
The film was somewhat of a response to critics labeling his previous film as too relying on intertitles, and was part of his work with the kinoks. Kino artists heavily criticized the way that popular films were merely adaptations of literature and plays; this is generally true even today. Instead, they insisted on creating documentary cinema and filming candid workers instead of actors.

I'm not a national socialist, but you don't have to be one to have an interest learning about different points of view or hearing people out. I noticed that a lot of people appear to have this fear of being wrong and their minds being changed, when it comes to this kind of subject matter. To be honest, that seems like a major shortcoming and probably negatively impacts a lot of aspects of one's life than they realize. I mean. if NSDAP were just a bunch of hateful dicks for no reason, then you probably won't feel positive towards the national socialist ideology, assuming that you are a person with a heart, even if you were wrong about whether or not the holocaust happened, that shouldn't really change how you feel. But let's say they weren't even hateful dicks and all/most of the fuarrrked up stuff are just war time rumors, like how "the french are a bunch of pussies" via the UK. You still don't have to agree with their ideology to learn about them. I know a lot about German national socialism, Spanish falangism, and Italian fascism, and I'm not really interested in any of those three political ideas to become popular.

I love Mads Brügger's documentaries. He is an absolute madman. In The Ambassador, he decides to go to the Central African Republic with fake diplomatic papers and acquire blood diamonds. That doesn't sound like something you could really do and make a documentary of, but he does. His works can be a little rough around the edges but that's inevitable given how exceedingly raw they are.

It is about the creation of illusions, advertisement, influence on the voters, CIA experiments for mind control and propaganda methods. Despite being almost 30 years old, it is suprisingly very relevant for today. It promotes the values of rationalism over irrationalism of American popular culture.

It is fitting for a documentary about art to attempt to express more than just objective facts, and as a result be itself artistic. A detached, neutral observer would fail to communicate how the art is felt by those involved, which is a crucial part of it. Of course, there will inevitably also be bias involved, but one can work on that. I think this documentary is great.

Someone FINALLY uploaded the documentary Union Square to youtube. It came out in 2003 but was only uploaded 3 weeks ago. Been wanting to see it for well over a decade, as years ago I was one of the union square junkies myself.
Finally about to check it out. Highly recommend it as the trailers and clip reels I have seen many times posted from it make it a definite hit. If anyone else watches it let me know.

Some documentaries about Israel's unjustified attack upon the U.S.S Liberty. There are some other interviews given by U.S.S Liberty crewmembers which poke further holes in the lie concocted by the American and Israeli governments, but they're not really documentaries I guess, and these three videos quite effectively show the truth of the situation.

"The Town that Caught Tourette's"; it's around 50 minutes long and reminds me of the dancing plague of 1518. Years after this incident, the causation remains undecided. However, if it was indeed psychological, it really shows how susceptible the human mind is to peer pressure and that's scary.

I'm not the biggest fan of TED talks, because I associate them a lot with people who con artists who promise to find the solution to your problem by selling you something, while documentaries are more artistic to me. Perhaps this is a prejudice that I ought to overcome.

I hate this with all my being. Those aislop sentences designed to amuse 70iq goycattle, made by llm trained on advertisements and other marketing material and having maybe about 5% content, the rest is sales rhetoric filler. Then read up by that fuarrrking gay clanker voice that sounds fuarrrking uncanny, like i'm listening to some killer robot, all with that debil "modern" subtitle style, it makes me want to destroy my computer.

late to the party, but I recently learned that one of the key figures to the Occupy Wall St. movement, and owner of the https://occupywallst.com/ domain, is yet another techno-fascist that, and I quote Wikipedia here, "petitioned the US government on We the People to hold a referendum asking for support to retire all government employees with full pensions, transfer administrative authority to the technology industry, and appoint the executive chairman of Google Eric Schmidt as CEO of America"

The unshakeable condescension and passivity that cannot be prompted away, the refusal to get to the heart of the matter. This Mind-Blowing Feynmanslop is only coincidentally about this topic in the first place, the content is an inconvenient obstacle to the true goal; money mining.
What disturbs me most is that people are fine with it. Many can intuitively feel something is off with it, but are fine with it anyway. The voice is so hollow, I can't bear it. All I can ever think of is the pathetic slob on the other side.
>We're here to share his incredible way of explaining physics with a new generation who never got to learn from him directly. This isn't his voice — it's our tribute to his teaching style, created purely for education and inspiration. No impersonation intended, just deep respect for one of history's greatest teachers.

I've been recently interested in some obscure chinese directors, and I've been meaning to watch this "Action 2024" from Wu Wenguang. I can't find it anywhere in the western internet, and I'm expecting that even if I find it, it'd have no sub at all.
I don't really want to create a new thread just for this, so I thought I'd ask at least in the thread related to the genre of the movie. Where do lainons go to find stuff like this?
