Seconded. Came for the cybernetic implants, stayed for the crushing loneliness. Oh god that ending, makes me wanna die.
Okay other stuff I got:
AD Police Files (note it's AD Police FILES, the OVA trilogy, not AD Police the series. The series is ass.)
Any of the anthology films produced by Katsuhiro Otomo: Neo Tokyo, Robot Carnival, and Memories
Ergo Proxy (again, not sure how obscure this is, but it's incredibly atmospheric IMO)
I know you didn't ask for printed media, but check out everything ever made by Tsutomu Nihei. They made a couple CG-laden anime of his work; a series for Knights of Sidonia and a Netflix movie for Blame. There's also some very short old OVA for Blame that are actually animated the old-fashioned way.
Oh and have any of y'all heard of this cartoon called Serial Experiments Lain?

Key the Metal Idol - 90s curiosity that looks and feels like a shameless ripoff of NGE and Lain... but it came out before either of them. Good music, good art, but the story has a pretty serious case of missed potential.
The Silver Case / 25th Ward - Two (technically five) extremely rough Tech Noir stories presented in a very avant-garde style. Lots and lots of characters, vast and borderline incomprehensible conspiracies, a thin line between reality and delusion, all that sprawling postmodern goodness.
I/O revision II - Weird ass visual novel about the realness of reality. Full of bizarre mysticism and Jungian psychology. Generally accepted to one of the most complicated stories in visual novels, if not THE most complicated.

What happens to the humanity-serving robots of the far distant future, when there are no humans left? What happens to the prostitute-bots when the only intelligent beings, their fellow robots, have absolutely no use for their only skills?
And what happens to this robotic society when one of them undergoes a strange transformation that makes her neither robot nor human, and able to infect other robots with a grotesque imperfect variant of her transformation?
(It's very early CGI, but I think it kinda words for this, as it gives an uncanny-valley artificiality to the robots.)

If you haven't seen Max Headroom: run, don't walk to pirate that soykaf and watch it immediately.
I know I know, it's core cyberpunk TV. Especially if you're talking live action from the OG era. But hey, that was a generation ago now. Actually I was reading the other day about why cyberpunk as a genre isn't something we can move on from yet--and it was full of usual trite observations about how all speculative media now is dystopian instead of utopian like in the fifties. As if only positive messages about utopian perfection can steer us toward a better future. As if observations of our errors are worthless. The usual cult of positivity dogshit.
Welp. We can't get past cyberpunk because we haven't successfully avoided it. We've spectacularly failed. Cyberpunk was a rare brand of speculative fiction that was actually like 80 percent accurate. Maybe with more boring drugs and less colorful mohawks, but the major parts came true like some kind of eerie prophecy, and now a lot of stuff is mistaken for cyberpunk which actually is just regular old contemporary fiction. Like black mirror. Black mirror is our version of 20 minutes into the future--the slogan of Max Headroom, as it turns out. We don't get to write utopian fiction anymore because none of it came to fruition. Turns out dystopian depictions of technological progress were just plain more useful to humanity, so they persist. Only we used it as an instruction manual instead of a warning.
We'll be done with cyberpunk once we do the work these dreams are goading us--begging us--to do. Now we've reached this kind of disgusting post-post-modern nihilist idea that cyberpunk is cool just for the sake of an aesthetic reference, or even that cyberpunk is nostalgic. Which the latter is really the worst thing I can fuarrrking imagine. To accept not only that this world is inevitable, not only that it is preferable, but even that it's wistful. We've been duped. And don't even get me started on post-cyberpunk. Get all the way outta here with that y'all.
If you've seen Max Headroom but it's been a while, watch it again. It takes on strange new light now that it's a slightly miscarried yet still prescient vision of our future, present, and hell--recent past. It's weird.

I'd heard of Max Headroom for decades, and always got the impression that it was some dumb cheesy 80s thing. I'm currently binge-watching it and loving it. There's some downright prescient storylines and world holding concepts. The episode "Security Systems" in particular sticks in my mind, given modern "smart" home assistants all over the place.

> always got the impression that it was some dumb cheesy 80s thing
I was so sure until a minute ago that the character was created as a mascot for Coca Cola commercials. According to the internets, those came a little later. I guess it was the limited number of cable channels in my locale because I just know I saw those commercials before any TV movie or series and thought it was a weird progression for a fictional character. He was on talk shows and stuff too as I recall, as if he was a real guy.
Demeere · 2019-08-12 03:44

Yeah, the character Max had a bit of a strange pedigree. I think he existed as a character before the TV series, but he didn't do ads until after the series. That series also had lots of uncredited contributors apparently that went on to do lots of important things in the visual effects world. The show has a very strong following in the VFX community to this day.
It's certainly got a bit of the old 80s cheese, but in a good way IMO. It's an interesting view of the future without smartphones or internet--BUT--I think they came up with some predictions that turn out to be good analogues for things in our era of reality despite not having all the data. Which is impressive. Pretty prescient, as you say.

Haven't seen this but the star of it was also a director. He directed this movie for West German TV in the early 70s and it's basically cyberpunk before cyberpunk, with an artificial reality populated by artificial persons.
Unspecified · 2019-08-13 15:03
...and while we're at it, another German TV movie I consider pre-cyberpunk here. The protagonist of this one has to survive one week on a reality TV show while being hunted by real assassins trying to murder him, and members of the public help him along because half the country is cheering for him. There's spoof ads all throughout it reminiscent of the ones in Robocop.

Watched Subway and I was honestly pretty smitten. I can really see this being cyberpunk that's not actually cyberpunk. The vibe is all there. It's like a little tableau of characters who might live in a cyberpunk universe, yet it doesn't really focus on anything techy.
I think we so often concentrate too much on the cyber and forget about the punk; after all, that's how you get meaningless suffixing of things like steampunk and dieselpunk and all that other dogshit which have literally 0% punk influence, but for some reason they call it that anyway because it's the twenty-first postmodern century—nobody understands what punk was for anymore. It's just a sound we make with our face-holes to denote literally any aesthetic.
>>3625
Just finished watching Decoder too. Pretty sure all the other leeches on this thing are you dicks. I'll make sure and keep it going for a while, get that ratio up. I really liked it; total beatnik nonsense, very Burroughs—featured his 'dream machine' as well during a short scene. Always wanted to build one of those, even if they're probably total bullshit just like binaural beats or w/e.
I do like the cut-up style nonsense plot. It feels almost like a nightmare that you don't realize until waking that it was actually more silly or confounding than scary, but while you are in it you buy it anyway. Christiane F is a total bad bitch, I love her character and style as some kind of strange cyber-future-stripper-witch. And the colors of all the shots. Really puts you in a mood.
Both of the movies ended like startlingly abruptly, which I'm really into. Maybe it's pretentious, but I think that's how real stories end. There's no wrap-up, nothing's planned; things just end at strange and awkward times. Death is always ridiculous and undignified. There are no sunsets to ride off into. Just the absurdity of everything carrying on despite you, neither malignant nor benign but totally indifferent. Your greatest plans become merely more detritus to grease the wheels.

Please note all of the 6 movies above, I have actually watched multiple times, and recommended them to people and people have said huh ? what is that ? I have never heard of that.
Several of them are on my recommend movies page on my blog, and they all have themes which may not be strictly cyberpunk, are deeper variations on the summary of cyberpunk provided in the GURPS source book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GURPS_Cyberpunk as well as being high tech and low life.
Regarding that source book.
GURPS Cyberpunk received notoriety when the Austin headquarters of Steve Jackson Games was raided by the U.S. Secret Service in 1990. The authorities seized the manuscript for the sourcebook, which was under development at the time, asserting that it was a "handbook for computer crime". The book was reconstructed and rewritten from older drafts when the manuscript was not returned. The seizure delayed publication for six weeks. This raid is often wrongly attributed to Operation Sundevil, a nationwide crackdown on illegal computer hacking activities that was occurring about this time.

Rikuo Sakisaka, who has taken robots for granted for his entire life, one day discovers that Sammy, his home android, has been acting independently and coming and going on her own. He finds a strange phrase recorded in her activity log, "Are you enjoying the Time of Eve?". He, along with his friend Masakazu Masaki, trace Sammy's movements and finds an unusual cafe, "The Time of Eve". Nagi, the barista, informs them that the cafe's main rule is to not discriminate between humans and androids. Within the cafe, androids do not display their status rings, and, when patrons depart, the door is automatically locked for two minutes to prevent someone from following them to discover their true nature.- Wikipedia

It's because cyberpunk anime tends to be based on transhumanism, and transhumanism is ultimately just a modernized retelling of Abrahamic apocalyptic faiths. Instead of waiting for God, we're building God so she can whisk us into Cyber-Paradise.
Transhumanism is Christianity for the 21st century, just like how communism was Christianity for the 20th. And most cyberpunk anime directors can see the connection.

This is a good observation. Although, there was actually a brief period where "utopian cyberpunk" was kind of a thing... to the extent that the term isn't an oxymoron anyway. I'm mostly thinking about Charles Stross's Accelerando and Neil Stephenson's Diamond Age. The worlds they depict aren't actually that different from Gibson's early dystopias, it's just framed differently. Both sides of the coin agree that the world is changing extremely quickly and people are subject to fresh unimaginable horrors seemingly every day. However, the optimistic side sees the situation as a well of opportunity as the new world becomes too chaotic for the old power structures to control.
These books were written before the tech crash and economic recession so the authors were seeing one old industry fall after the other as they failed to keep up with the times. They envisioned an anarchic kind of utopia where everyone lives in constant future shock and power flows and shifts like water. Clearly there are some issues here because all that didn't really happen, and it turns out megacorps are more adaptable organisms than anyone counted on. (Also, this was the late 90s/early 2000s after all so there was definitely a naive thread of "post scarcity is just around the corner" throughout.)
Even so, there is some truth to these optimistic predictions and it is interesting to consider the possible benefits of a cyberpunk dystopia, particularly in how the opportunities it presents can be leveraged. After all, the chaos of our age killed the Sears corporation. A small victory, sure (and not to mention somewhat diminished by the awful things that replaced it) but this is a company that sold mail order houses in the mid century. I wouldn't fault anyone for seeing a glimpse of utopia there. Remember, the East India company once controlled 60% of the world's trade, and they too were destroyed by the erosion of accelerating time.

I absolutely love Dennou Coil and I recommend it. One thing that really made me fall in love with this show are the parts where they enter those glitchy spaces, or spaces that existed before but now only exists in the virtual word. I don't know, I always wanted to find weird, unexplored places like these and explore them, both physically or virtually, but nowadays a large part of the internet is already known, and on the physical world it is practically impossible unless you own a farm in the middle of nowhere that happens to be near (but not too near) an interesting geological formation or an old building. The closest thing I found that gave me this feeling was Janus VR, but I do not own VR glasses, and I wish the avatar creating process was updated, since many of the tools necessary to do it to not exist anymore. But other than that I really liked the plot overall.

Syfy a few years ago did a series that got canceled after one season of only 10 episodes called Incorporated. Seemed like a mix of cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk. It took place in what's best described as an AnCap dystopia where many governments collapsed from climate change and other problems and the corporations act as the government in some areas and others are left to themselves. Too bad it didn't last since i was interested in seeing where they were going to take it so we never will know how good or bad it could have been since first season mainly talked about prostitution and lack of medical care for the poor majority iirc.

I found some other cyberpunk/post cyberpunk series of shine finger paints that were nice to kill time:
>Fractale
Similar to the matrix meets google glass- the whole world lives in VR in some kind of VR cult/anti VR rebels, themes of separation from the machine and platos allegory of the cave type soykaf (obviously not the greatest story, but it was something to binge watch besides angsty teen vampire movies). Most of the story takes place in the real world instead of the virtual, and the emphasis is on regressing to traditional living.
>No Guns Life
Like texhnolyze but not as depressing, pretty much the same premise with more action and less artistic emphasis: Augmented humans and their various problems living in the underworld with being augmented, dealing with the anti-enhancement humans, massive corporations and some GITS type stuff that is really downplayed, this series is still ongoing. Fun fact, the the same quote from NGE "Gods in his heaven- all's right in the world" from a poem is written in one of the scenes.

Love finding some older stuff in here I haven't caught yet. I don't like any of the newer stuff, really. Cybersix, a weird-and-wonderful short animated series based on an early 1990s comic book series. The survivor of genetic engineering experiments hides her identity by crossdressing as a male teacher by day, and moonlights as a Batman-esque leathered-up caped vigilante hell-bent on taking down the mad scientist who created her.
Argentinian source material, Japanese animation, Canadian voice work, and a beautiful opening song ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ajz2IH0eXc ).

>Un-Go
Everyone seems to forget this one is technically cyberpunk, and IMO a fairly realistic one aside from the few magical elements (which themselves can be taken as metaphors).
>Dimension W
Drops the ball in a few places, but is pretty good on average. It's also an example of the rarer post-cyberpunk genre which I feel itself is underappreciated.
>Solty Rei
Hard to describe, and even more subtle than the others until the last act. Alongside the questionable character designs, I feel this one filters a lot of people by accident.

I liked how the anime captured the concept of not going along with the latest technology, and how the protagonist used antique gas vehicles instead of the latest future fuel vehicles. It was not an isolated rejection of technology, in fact the MC lived in the middle of a high tech society.

There are a few standalone anime movies that I thought captured the cyberpunk aesthetic, or at least a transhumanist one.
>Harmony (2015)
>To prevent new horrors, the world has been divided into several smaller states. Each state is defined as an ethical solidarity and futuristic society controlled by "admedistration", facilities where nanotechnology is used for medical purposes to improve quality of life. In Japan, the young Tuan Kirie and her friends Miach Mihie and Cian Reikado protest against this society and seek true personal autonomy from the system, attempting suicide by refusing food and medication in an effort to openly reject this supposed "utopia". However, when the time comes, Tuan and Cian fail to follow through on their commitment.
The movie also delves into some transhumanist themes, but some people may not like the ending.
There was also an anime that I cannot remember that I saw back in 2010? the story was that people instead of going to prison get placed in a body suit that was called a laminate, that turns them into slaves or robots, the people can't speak or move freely unless given an order to, and they are used for free labor. IIRC it was a romance/mystery anime where the MC tries to solve a conspiracy with the help of his new female slave. Maybe someone knows the name of this anime.
>AUTOMATA (2014)
Trying to rebuild the world again, a robot company named ROC Corporation create Automata Pilgrim 7000 with two security protocols: 1st, a robot cannot harm human beings, and 2nd, a robot cannot alter himself or another robot. But this situation changes when police officer Sean Wallace shoots and destroys a robot claiming that it was altering himself. With the company worried by the possible implications if the case were known by the people, insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is chosen to investigate the happened.
Had a lot of cyberpunk themes including black market sex bots and robot mechanics.

It's been a while since I watched that and I didn't remember there being much nudity after the first few epsiodes so I could be wrong with the following?
>unnecessary nudity
I felt that nudity in media in general makes me feel more protective of a character, like I've been brought into a trusted inner circle of theirs.
And that in Key The Metal Idol some of the violent scenes were pretty impactful and the mood would've been pretty sparse without it maybe?
I'm curious, what kind of predictions do you have about how it'll end being at the end of the first program?

I'm fine with violent scenes, what ruins the mood is the weird r*pe fetish scenes that are so long and unnecessary that it's hard not to assume the writers are getting off to it. I already know the guy is a creep, you don't need to make more sexual assault scenes to show me that. It pisses me off because Miho is so cool in the opening when she slashes her face off with her bare hands, I love the aesthetic of the character but half of her screen time so far have been nothing but BDSM fetishism. This anime is a hidden gem. I don't know if it is quite cyberpunk but I feel like people on this site would appreciate it. This is a pretty accurate review:
"I like to think of Dennō Coil as sort of a spiritual successor to last decade's Serial Experiments Lain - just like in Lain, the protagonists are kids, and just like in Lain, they're using technology to push the envelope of human experience. Lain explored the idea of a cyberspace alter-ego, but Dennō Coil opts to examine the dangers of one's online self being separated from their physical self."

"WOW" a 1994 Polish-German TV series for kids about a self aware intelligent computer virus that breaks free from computer of a computer maniac teacher in his early 30s due to machination of a villain that is spying on his computer and tries to "suck it out of his computer" with his device.
Later it's all about friendship, virus being able to remote control electronic device and villains trying to steal it. Dunno if you would consider it cyberpunk as it has an opposite then usual trope - here software enters real realm and gains somehow a real body that is not robotic or biological in nature.
These series was technologically outdated like few years after it come out BTW if not on arrival.
Dunno if it was ever aired in Germany. I have seen it on Polish TV back in the '90s.

When I started watching Ergo Proxy I was expecting a dystopia inside the dome, so when Vincent just walked out I was very shocked. Ergo Proxy is really cool because of the aesthetic, it gives an odd feeling of emptiness and it's super fun to watch because of that. I think it's pretentious and the ending was lame, but I did loved every second of it (specially the awesome opening with emo song.)

I've never understood openings or closings, and will always skip them. If I wanted to rewatch some visuals, I would go back episodes to rewatch it. If I wanted to hear the lyrics to something, I would do just that. I neither want to listen to music chosen by someone else nor rewatch the same visuals with no plot driving force twice every episode.
Anyways, as long as I'm not just misunderstanding it all I can accept it and continue watching. As I'm watching I find myself questioning if I don't understand something or if something that has occurred simply doesn't make sense yet, but at least with your agreeance I know it's the latter to some extent.

Openings usually are there to set the mood, and I think that's important so I don't skip them (sometimes I do but only if it's boring). Closings are credits with music, there's not much to it.

Openings mostly just exist to waste the viewer's time and cut costs on animation.
Agent Richard Gill · 2021-02-27 20:52

People like anime openings for the same reason that people like music videos. Thats it, they're music videos with anime set to them, people just don't want to admit that the reason they like openings is because they're music videos with anime set to them.
They mostly exist as an excuse to cut runtime as >>7695 says. The Simpsons is a very open example of this where the length of the opening would actually change based on the how much of an episode they actually had to show. The episodes with really long couch gags had long couch gags because they couldn't get the length up to the full time slot, be it for monetary reasons (cutting costs) or because they struggled to write it long enough (classic example of this is Cape Feare where the writers admitted they couldn't stretch the episode out to a full length so they filled with a long opening and various overly long gags).

Just rewatched it, not pretentious at all. Really good soykaf, still not a fan of Daedalus and Weird white Re-L with wings and space humans vs pseudo-humans ending but is really cool and I almost cried when Raul died. 9/10 super recommend it, episode 16 is my favorite.

I has a lot of rewatchability too. Knowing some of the twists you can spot Proxy One skulking around in shadow.
Episode 16 is such an excellent character episode and it has that desolate feeling the series is so good at. It's hard for me to choose a favorite, but the mysteries they happen upon while roaming the wastelands are where it's at for me. 10, 11, 14, 15 are all really strong contenders for me.

Tetsuo the Iron man and Tetsuo 2: body hammer.
The first movie is pretty light on story. a metal fetishist infected with metal gets hit by a car and stalks the salary man who hit him as they both become metalic monsters. It was shot on a pretty small budget, has pretty cool stop motion effects and a kickass soundtrack. Tetsuo 2 has a little bit more story, a cult of metal worshipers kidnap a fathers son and the father starts to develop powers . More of a light remake of the first but really entertaining and has really good special effects.

Wonderful days was pretty good, I had forgotten how to call the name of this anime, but it kept coming to mind.
Does anyone know the anime i am talking about?
>The government uses a new technology to imprison people instead of jail.
>It is called laminate IIRC.
>People who are laminated become slaves/robots for people.
>The MC get a "laminate" girl to work for him
>She cannot talk or from the imprison technology.
>The MC finds out he can order her to type messages on a PDA and it won't violate the imprison protocol.
>The MC grows attatched to the girl who is laminate.
The MC finds out that the girl is a scientist and there is a conspiracy about the laminates being used to create a cheap disposable workforce.
the MC falls in love with the scientist girl.

Does Gunslinger girl count? I think it at least has cyberpunk elements in the same way GitS does:
1. The protagonists are all cyborgs
2. Heavy organized crime elements
3. Protagonists fight crime.
>Special Ops is itself divided into Sections 1 and 2, the latter of which employs young girls who have experienced traumatic and near-death experiences fitted with cybernetic implants as agents. The implants, which consist of synthesized muscles and carbon fiber frames, result in heightened strength and reflexes as well as high resilience to damage and pain.

Hard to compare anything I know to Mr Robot but being a fan I can list a few things that come to mind on what you're looking for or maybe not. Damnation actually produced by same network that did Mr Robot but definitely not cyberpunk or even tech related more a Western but not the cowboy kind. Unfortunately it was cancelled after first season. Possibly for being too historically honest about capitalist evils. There also is Incorporated which was a SyFy cyberpunk show about well basically a guy trying to deal with AnCapistan lol Also unfortunately cancelled after first season so it doesn't really go anywhere with the plot. There also was a Comedy Central show called Corporate and while not cyberpunk it had a couple episodes or at least one that were like a light cyberpunk such as the episode Pickles for Breakfast . Also eventually cancelled but at least it was after third season. Hmm noticing a pattern here.

Dunno if you're still around, but I've watched it. I must admit that the animation and CGI was stunning for 2001, but - assuming you've watched it too - didn't you get the sense that at the last quarter of the movie things suddenly took a giant leap in plot? Like you were missing a page or two or something? I suspect the directors dried up their budget out, so they had to skip some great details or events as far as plot development goes. That's just the feeling I got from it, but it could just as easily be that I wasn't paying enough attention to what was going on. Either way, it was more of a visual spectacle than a story-telling masterpiece.
Gyula Kovacs · 2021-08-19 20:44

Not him, I got that feeling from it too though. I really enjoyed the emotion and the visuals. The (quite literal) stratification of society via the layers of the city was also interesting and well-done, even if it's an obvious analogy. Sometimes the worthwhile ones are obvious precisely because they need to be repeated.
I do wonder about that plot gap you mentioned. Maybe during development the editor got screwed, no idea. But I would wager there's something left on the cutting room floor.

>Eden: It's an endless world
While this is a manga, it is visually impressive, with most of the story revolving around the son of a mob boss in a post apocalyptic cyberpunk world, it also delves into a lot of other character stories. The cybernetics look exactly like the concept art from the cyberpunk rulebook.
Some of the darker themes deal with suicide, rape, prostitution, ethnic cleansing, and drug addiction

Season 2 follows the manga more closely and if you go into it expecting season 1 but better youll be disappointed.
Its good in its own right but it can get dull since they only focused on the pinocchio arc which was more or less open and shut case even in the manga.
WOuld highly reccomend you read the manga since the following arcs are better since they focus more on the relationships between the girls and their handlers.

I am looking for an "artificial reality" film of the likes of The Matrix, Truman Show, Dark City, Futurological Congress. Looking up IMDB using these as similar did not yield any results.
The film is Australian, artificial reality is set in retrofuturist 50's, main character suffers from a car accident in the beginning and probably has memory loss, this is how he's introduced into this world, in the end he meets the "overseer", there is a conveyor belt sequence similar to Dark City, conveyor is unmanned and delivers briefcases, and finally he comes to realization living in post-apocalyptic destroyed world heavily hallucinating from some kind of drug/TV brainwashing like in Lem's Congress, and basically everything is made out of cardboard: his parents' house, even food.
I gave a pretty much elaborate description, the film definitely was made in Australia, it probably has an article on TV Tropes, but I hadn't found it yet. Hope someone helps me.

Finally found it. Virtual Nightmare, 2000
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244290/
IMDB is such an idiotic catalog. There is no sort by country, but you can fish for "Australian Science FIction" label somewhere, adding "Virtual Reality" on top of that was a no-brainer then. And even after all that, result list is polluted with Matrix which had two scenes filmed in Sydney arghh. Wikipedia calls it American film. There is no text search for labels (booru sites figured this out 17 years ago, Amazog still has not), no way to exclude labels, only add, so you have to juggle these silly user-submitted(!) conjunctions.

Okay... Ill just say it, Gibsons story was trash, and I kept falling asleep reading it. Ended up having to listen to it on an audiobook while going about my day to get through it. Not saying it didn't have a good plot and theme, but the execution was odd, like the random sex scene at the beginning that seemed really out of place. His other stories were better imo

The Lone Gunmen. It's an X-Files spin-off, and if you liked X-FIles including it's rather cringy "cyberpunk" episodes written by Gibson, you will adore this haxploitation show. Y2K aesthetic all over, filmed in British Columbia, "hacking" scenes look decently plausible, computers have actual GUIs and terminal windows instead of nonsensical cartoon graphics. All three main characters seem like computer whiz hacktivist/whacko journalist munchkins at first glance, but each of them actually has distinct team roles down the plot. You will see some parallels with another popular sci-fi show at the time, Dark Angel. The girl they got there definitely seemed like some sort of discount Jessica Alba femme fatale.
First episode alone is worth watching.

Additional amendment to this thread: Thomas est amoureux (Thomas in Love)
Belgian-French film from 2000. Shot entirely from perspective of an agoraphobic man who spends his time at computer/videophone screen.
On soyberpunk scale of "predicting" future this is one of my favourites in addition to being hikkycore. Everyone uses videophone was considered tacky science fiction in 2010, a mundane reality now, cybersex with crappy CGIs, chatting with sad and tired "models" from e-brothel, chatting with girls from a dating site, having a crush on an e-girl, delivery man in full hazmat suit, robot vacuums, helicopter mother who calls too often, and of course, every adult sports a crappy oriental tattoo on visible parts of their body, this is definitely a film about 2020's.
