Let's Draw Lain!

Hacker · 2019-07-10 01:12
I was thinking about it for a good bit, and then I looked in the catalog and was surprised it wasn't there already. How about we all try and draw Lain? I'll start with something I made in Math class.
Special Agent Bob · 2019-07-10 10:03
I don't know why, but I get worse and worse at drawing every day. One would expect that it will be the other way around.

>>3480 Keep at it Anon! Sometimes you fail to consistently produce things to quality you have achieve before, but it's all about commitment. My anime art only a few months ago was really bad in comparison before I could get the stuff on the right more consistently.

Either I can never draw well enough for stuff to show up clearly or my camera is soykaf

>>3485 It may have to do with the balance of the black/white levels. This can be easily adjusted in GIMP. I would also recommend picking up a cheap scanner for around ten dollars at a local thrift store.

Donna Hawthorne · 2019-08-07 10:08
>>3589 >>3594 So how are you feeding it into the oscilloscope exactly? Almost looks like a raster on that 'scope. Seems to have some pixel stairstepping.
Shogun · 2019-08-07 10:49
>>3595 I use ft2232 chip in async bitbang mode, three 74HC595 shift registers for two (X and Y) self-made 8 bit R2R DACs and Z input of oscilloscope for beam brightness control (just on/off for now). I also tried arduinos with 328p and 32u4 controller and ESP32 dev board but all of these does not provide enought data throughput to draw as many dots on scope without flickering. For lasershows i think it would be enough because of more pronounced persistence of vision effect and galvos inertance, oscilloscope beam has almost no inertance in comparison, so we need more dots. Image is not raster, it's looks pixelated due to low resolution of DACs, for now i can get only 256x256 images, but i plan to increase resolution to 10-12 bits (or maybe to 16, but i read that it is impossible to do with R2R at home). I will post schematic and code at github later if you are interested. Of course it would be absolutely amazing have some special fully analog curcuit drawing Lain on scope, but i'm a programmer, not electronic engineer =) And sorry for probably bad english, it's not my native.
Koichiro · 2019-08-07 11:05
>>3596 Actually your English is amazing, especially considering you're explaining some highly technical subjects. This is super cool. Love that it's a setup for controlling laser galvos but you can just schlep it right into an oscilloscope and it still works this well. The Z input must explain why it's so darn clean compared to oscilloscope vector images I've seen created a computer's sound card, for example. There's always overshoot and a traceback on that because it's not really designed for such a thing, but a sound card can do in a pinch. I've been checking out some "oscilloscope music" lately, and many of them require modifying the sound card in some way to make more complex patterns. The fact that it's quick and precise enough to make stair-stepping due to the DAC resolution is impressive in its own right. Guess that's kind of what you mean by the galvo inertia; steering a mirror would tend to smooth that out versus a nearly weightless electron beam. It's really one of the most crisp images I've seen on an oscilloscope using improvised hardware. Great work. Yeah, I'd love to check out the schematic and code if you have time to upload it, thanks for the consideration. You really kick ass. I kind of want to load up Lain on my old monochrome green phosphor terminal monitor now and take a photo. Not nearly as technically impressive, but I can join in in some capacity :)

I've been drawing for a few hours every day since mid-January. This took over three hours and I don't think I've improved at all since I started. Every time I draw something looks off and I can never pinpoint it. I don't enjoy drawing at all, yet I still do it.

Acid Burn · 2020-02-15 07:18
>>5085 I like to think that I'm half decent when it comes to copying things by eye (in that I can produce things that are visually appealing, at least to me), but when it comes to doing things that aren't just copies everything falls apart. I try to apply what I've learned (I try to do a sort of reverse-construction when copying), but it just ends up looking like that. Drawing things like that and it slowly becoming less soykaf over time by doing it more is the only way I'm going to get any better, but it isn't enjoyable at all. Of all the hobbies I've picked up, drawing is by far the most time consuming, the least enjoyable, and the one I have made the least progress with.

>>5081 >>5088 >>5108 >>5085 Aphantasia related mental deficiency. If you can't draw well you can't visualize. The powers that be don't consider aphantasia to be a spectrum but in truth all mental ailments are on a spectrum. Also they don't consider it a deficiency because it doesn't keep you from digging a ditch to not be able to visualize things properly, but of course it is an ailment. If you cannot visualize then you are a lack luster specimen with less potential than those around you. No intuition going into the abstract shapes of your mind then how can you construct things originally with such a genetic structure? Da Vinci made not just drawings but machines. He's a top specimen. Most humans are deficient. I'm a lesser specimen too as I drew the ms-pain lain of which on the bright side only took five-ten minutes. On the bad it's basic as hell and flat. My abstract puzzle solving capabilities are very two dimensional as a result of drawing flat pictures. Probably related to black and white thinking. I should use my actual drawing utensils to make a Lain and take a picture of it. I feel bad that the sleep bubble doens't reach my Lain's nose. One of these years I should use my neet allowance (yearly 50-200 usd) to buy a graphics tablet drawing pad thing. I used one before and it wasn't so bad. >>4970 In cyberpunk you can't see the spoiler and that scared me accidentally hovering the cursor over it. >>4952 >finding emoji meme funny >has wife ew >>3551 >>3546 She looks angry and butch. >>3543 >an attempt was made >>3541 Was this done in charcoal? >>3553 I'd have made the dimensions bigger. >>3488 pretty effect
Hacker · 2020-03-05 08:43
>>5172 >Aphantasia related mental deficiency. That seems like a huge assumption to make, lainon, especially when I've only been drawing seriously for two months and still can't draw circles in a reasonable time. I can visualise things in my head very well, and I have an almost photographic memory for certain things, but I'm not nearly skilled enough with draftsmanship (because I'm still new to it) to put those visualisations on paper (and I suspect that it could be dyspraxia related). At the moment art is a learning process for me, so I've also put a large focus on making sure I'm not symbol drawing, and instead doing things like construction (usually to poor results). That necessitates a lot of time.

Spooky · 2020-07-10 18:14
>>6223 Yeah morph. Same idea as this linked card, would allow you to reuse morph cards. Gameplay of lain making everyone forget about the creature so it resets and becomes a secret again. Alternatively you turn some strong enemy creature into a weak 2/2. I like multi-purpose so you have to consider how to play it. Open question is if it would be naturally limited to only morph cards by the game rules.

>>10640 How useful do people find such charts? People usually have such different proportions that I can't help but think these guides let you draw only one specific type of person. I'm not an artist btw.
Masami Eiri · 2023-05-11 10:52
>>10654 It's alright. a bit useful. I rely on it a bit if height/body parts are looking wonky, but if your goal is to make something look wonky or not make an adult proportioned character (gnomes, kids, someone that has "more to love", etc...) then it's a bit useless. also the arms (to me) are too lanky on that chart. Best comparison is yourself/real life reference. Look yourself in a mirror/pic. There's a bunch of poses online, too.
Undisclosed · 2023-05-12 15:25
>>10654 Standardized proportions are used as character markers. There's a model for hero proportions stemming from antique still used to visually distinguish heroes from normal characters. The benefit of a standard is you can keep consistency across your work which is especially important when you draw comic/manga and not just one image.

>>3485 Problem is none of those things. I mean yes, you drew it with pencil, of course it doesn't show up. You could get a better picture by taking it outdoors. Judging by the 'colourful' blobs of noise, this was indoors; indoor lighting is extremely weak, phone cameras are generally made for outdoor use and compensate when indoors by increasing ISO which increases noise. The picture is hard to adjust because it is very low contrast. The subtle shadow on the lower right quadrant is a huge problem. Edge detection and threshold are unusable here. Zoom in on a pencil line and see for yourself, how little difference the pixel value is between paper and pencil. I used Gimp on the image, my usual techniques didn't work but I figured it out in the end. Managed to make the linework come out a bit, you can see detail in the hair that was hard to see in the original. Here's what I did. >Symmetric Nearest Neighbor. Radius 8, Pairs 2 >Saturation. 0.000 >Levels. Input 0, 0.37, 255 Output 59, 255 >Exposure. Black 0.100, Exposure 0.650 Like >>3486 said, a scanner could help because they create a better environment for photography, but if you don't want to fork out the cash, have a shot at taking the pictures outdoors instead. >>3488 Curve filters are very finicky, and again, with a low contrast photo I think it's a less useful tool.

Trinity · 2026-04-09 16:35
>>13072 just work on it and find out what youre doing wrong. first and foremost is being able to copy right and take your time doing so. just think of how you learnt things in school first, vocubalry, grammar and all that. you copied down notes and then had little tasks trying to do it on your own, which would be something like copying a drawing or a picture (a drawing would be easier, since the lines are already present) and then do it from memory as a task right after or the day after. repeat this for several hours a day and you will be presentable in a few months time. trust me on this.
