How would watching anime look like on the old dial-up internet?
Probably something like this.
Nichijou - Mio Loses It scene in only 563 KiB.

I got kinda obsessed with making everything as small as possible (in terms of file-size I mean).
So if anyone can make this even smaller, feel free to do so.
Morpheus · 2019-05-19 13:51
I member download a file of 100 MB and taken the whole day to finish.

I watched a lot of anime on dial up back in the day... Just to watch one episode of something would be a one or two day ordeal.
Acid Burn · 2019-05-22 09:33
I had ares but it was not worth it to watch anime downloading it with dial up, it used to take me like a day to download one song, a 50 mb low res anime episode was a pain in the ass, the bill would be expensive and my family would be pissed at me for not being able to use the phone.
it was easier and cheaper to just buy a burned bootleg which were sold everywher here in Latam. I didn`t really watched anime online until broadband era and people started uploading the chapters on youtube in 3-4 parts.

that was so annoying, especially if youtube algorithm didn't pick up and you had to look for the next part...

i don' think anyone would actually put that much effort into it... but yeah, one could do that... it's like when you telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

very impractical but youtube only allowed 10 minute videos and they had to be very low resolution. I watched so many entire series like that.

I don't think ASCII art animation was that popular even back in the text era. If you want to watch a video, rewind your tape...
But I do have the experience of watching anime back in the 0.5 Mbps DSL age: You obtain links from filesharing sites and put them into eMule, and leave your computer on for a week. By the end of the week you would have ~12 episodes to watch.... And at that time, all the videos were in Real's RMVB, I believe it took a few more years before releasing groups started using Xvid. Oh, and if Windows XP crashes, you'll need restart your download but thanks to I.C.H error-correction, a full redownload was not needed. eMule was really revolutionary back then. After 2008 everything moved to BitTorrent...

The only time ASCII porn was even a thing was the C64 scene, to the BBS scene.

To get the effect, you're supposed to print it out and stand across the room. Yeah, I couldn't see the point either, even back then.
The earliest Net porn would be the sort of lo-res non-animated gifs scanned in from magazines that used to be sold on CD by mail order. You know, computer dadporn.
The images that now only exist on the net in celebrity nude collections because their novelty outweighs their low quality.

This is a kinda of funny thread for people who did watch anime on dial up.
40 mb realvideo files that really were barely watchable.
cool though
Pris · 2019-07-01 02:49
there's a mpv video display option called libcaca which converts your video to ASCII

My family dialup until 2008. I remember trying to download songs off limewire. Spent all night getting one song only for it to be some soykafty cover, was so enraged.

There was an anime society at the university that showed movies once a week, they also had a few boxes of bootleg tapes with amateur fan made subtitles that you could sign out like a library book. They only had things that were unlicensed in this region so as soon as a movie or TV series got an English dub and official release they stopped sharing it. As an official student society, they were weary of breaking the law. Most stuff was still non-copyright in this region at the time because the law was different then. The tapes were copied and shared by mail with other fans in the English speaking world.
That was how we watched anime in the time of dialup, in my town at least.

Same.

Well, since the other parts were usually on the same channel, it wasn't so hard to find them.

And thank god for that. Emule is abandonware with a twist: the original authors refuse to release new versions. People have hacked together binary patches to correct the worst bugs, it's hell. A year ago I tried to download something extremely rare and I installed emule. It was like 1994 again, with an horrible user interface, having to change values on dialog boxes *in the correct order* fr it to notice, it was torture.
Also, files were way smaller than today's.

On the demoscene I think ascii porn is meant as a joke.
For soft-core 90s porn watch Hajime Sorayama
For cool ascii art watch Joan G Stark. She had a huge website that has been backed up in some of the geocities revivals.
