Famous/Classic directors that you cannot stay

/film/, let's be honest here. Some of the famous/classic directors are sometimes completely out of our alley and their works seem worthless to us. This thread is for this kind of discussion. For me two directors I have huge gripe with are: Kurosawa (too much focus on imagery, very flat characters, too grandiose ideas (for the story itself), too much form) Jodorowsky (lmao drugs lmao very bad reading of buddhism and gospels, I really can't say more as I can't stay watching his movies for more than 15 minutes).

>>3023 >Jodorowsky Yeah, I just finished El Topo and have to say that, while I'm glad it inspired Metal Gear, it just wasn't that great, in my opinion. While I wouldn't say "worthless," I can't say that I understand the love for Ozu now that I've seen Tokyo Story.

I've never really liked Tarantino's movies. They're always loud and in your face, which I guess was his intention. But for me, the worst part is how he utilizes human suffering not to show that even the worst of us are human, but to poke fun at them for the position their in. Not to mention, people treat his movies as comedies, when at best they rely on sudden extreme violence, tonal whiplash, or non--sequiters to generate hollow comedy. Worst of all, apparently the man has a foot fetish? And rather than being grossed out by it, his directing friends include in their movies nods to this (Edgar Wright comes to mind). He also uses his movies as excuses to get away with saying anything, Pulp Fiction being the strongest example of this.

I felt this way about Oshii the more of his stuffed I watched and the more I saw what the source material actually was. He takes a lot of unique and interesting stuff and then strips it down into the same formula over and over again so somehow you end up with Ghost in the shell, Patlabor and jin roh all having the same tone and pacing. The characters are also weirdly homogenized(Batou in GITS2 for example) into this dreary mush. He's made essentially the same movie about 4 times now. The other one for me would be Nolan. He has these very grandiose concepts, but lacks the attention to detail to keep the quality level consistent. So even at his best his movies are full of terrible stunt work, nothing characters, aborted plotlines, lazily shot elements and other soykaf. When he keeps it small like Memento I really like him though. Aronofsky gets an honorable mention for being a hack soykafhead in general.

>>3455 Everything you listed is why I like his movies.
