Thank you! And it takes some work but it's doable. Assuming your already on linux, look into the program pywal. I used it to generate the terminal/vim colorscheme and than used that colorscheme in oomox to make the window decorations/colors. The rest is just tweaking the panel and various config files to your liking

mixer = "Master"

Just use what you feel most comfortable using. That's the most important.
And if you start feeling it doesn't fit your needs, start exploring for alternatives. As simple as that.
We aren't /g/ and we don't bash you if you use Windows. A Operating System is just another tool to get stuff done with, there are variations but in the end they all serve the same purpose: To give a environment for a user to use their programs on their computer.

You can have a great level of customization with a very basic (to none) understanding of lua.
A great library to help you achieve more in the customization department is: https://github.com/lcpz/lain but have a look around awesome's website for tutorials and suggestions.
Learning lua (which is not difficult at all if you have some basic understanding of programming) would allow you to do very custom and personalized things, but it is not needed to use awesome. I believe that following the tutorials and using the currently available libraries will get you a pretty satisfying result. You may even get one of the many configuration files that exist out there and just use that (here is one collection of existing configuration files and themes: https://github.com/lcpz/awesome-copycats), although I would suggest that you use them as a reference point for making you own config.
As for wayland support, there is some discussion on github and reddit. There is also this project https://github.com/Way-Cooler/way-cooler. I believe that we may see a port of awesome on wayland, but only time will tell.

Seems okay then. I just would like to avoid learning another memelang, because I already know Guile Scheme, my perfect WM would be extended using it, but there aren't any (just some experimental, X-only thing).
But if the WM is awesome (pun intended), then I can try it.
Is it good for any screen size? I've noticed that tiling WMs (tried only i3) are inconvenient on small screens, like on my old 14 inch thinkpad.
Anyway, thanks for the info.

in the original I think I was using ncmpcpp, in which you can enable a visualizer AND add web radio channels, all from st. pretty cool.
For the weather I had to make another prin function in neofetch which just required me to copy the already-existing prin function, call it prin2, and change the part that got rid of spaces so it didn't get rid of them.
Then in the neofetch config I just downloaded wttr.in/LOCATION to a file and read the lines of the ascii art out one by one.

I don't program (well, I've started web dev, but it's not really like programing imo) so I don't see any reason to waste my time and learn to use linux, I tried to in the past and got tired of doing -pacman for every thing.

In these days of graphical package managers and Windows-like desktops, Linux is more user-friendly than ever, which makes it easier for newbies to get into. You don't need any programming experience, nor has it been that way in a long time. If my non-tech savvy dad can manage it, I'm pretty sure most can.
As for a reason to use Linux, it's a nobrainer. Apart from software ethics, Windows is generally just an awful system. It's bloated and barely fuctional. I could go on, but thats a whooole nother paragraph for you, so let's not get side tracked.
Also, software which lets Windows programs run in a Linux environment has come a long way. Look up Wine and DXVK if you're interested.
Kixune · 2020-05-29 08:55
My old laptop died and got a new one after some months.

>It's bloated and barely fuctional.
I wouldn't say "barely" but it is bloated, and that doesn't interfere with any work/study/gaming I do.
I am aware of Wine and had a working linux (manjaro meme).
There's still no reason for me, apart from the cool factor.
Basically I can't be assed to -pacman a bunch of things to download (I'm sure you need to do similar stuff on non manjaro/arch ones)where everything works perfectly well on windows.
藤原純一 · 2020-05-29 14:20

BloodCat · 2020-05-30 05:58
>>5995
>I'm sure you need to do similar stuff on non manjaro/arch ones
Not really. I guess your problem lies in the fact that Arch based distros are rolling-release, which is a special breed of Linux in a way. You said you don't like to do pacman for everything, which is understandable. That's why AUR helpers exist.
Ubuntu would seem to be more your thing though. It has great hardware support ootb. And it has become more like Windows over the years. (For better or worse)
It's the one distro I would recommend to anyone not familiar with Linux.
If you come across a problem or there's something you don't understand, just Google it. I have yet to see a distro with better community support.
If going for normal usage, the only commands you'll ever need is apt update, upgrade, search, install or use the gui and you prob won't need any.
If you can't leave your Windows behind, dual booting is always an option. But you knew that.
Also I'll leave these here.

Not the lainon, but Linux-libre is pretty sustainable. Like one guy is responsible for all the deblobing? People in Guix also do some deblobbing by themselves. If anything, GNU/Linux ecosystem generally goes in wrong direction - systemd, etc.
As long as Torvalds is alive, nothing extremely stupid and anti-user is going to happen to Linux.

Linux newbie here, how do you get those crisp-looking bitmap fonts to work? I'm using Mint 20, and as far as I understand, the font renderer, pango, is complete trash and cannot display anything other than hinted vector fonts past 1.44
Is there some sort of workaround out there, or do I simply have to downgrade to an older mint version if I want usable fonts on my system?

Project 2501 · 2020-09-21 09:55
Turns out, Debian Buster is pretty much linux perfection. Perfectly serviceable in all aspects, while still supporting bitmap fonts- literally all I could care for.
I'm using XFCE with a lightly modified raileigh-compact-reloaded theme, and Chicago95 for icons, this is basically peak usability, the crisp yet neutral interface falls right in the sweet-spot for maintaining an alert state of mind, while not causing fatigue and eyestrain during longer sessions.
The background ascii art was made with jp2a and rendered in GIMP. I also made an alternate one, which I would use, were it not for Lain's soul-piercing gaze making me feel self-conscious about using a modern web browser for j*vascript-heavy pages.

>https everywhere
This is not actually fail-safe after add-on crash or in-browser problems, there's still port 80 leaks in logs and sometimes it glitched into letting me browse http:// addresses. Maybe block port 80 traffic in router/hub firmware?
This is as bad as using a vpn add-on that crashes and just spill the soykaf or using software vpn that might crash too.
>pbadger
I guess the intention was good but poorly executed, sometimes it doesn't make sense and instead gives weird display fingerprint values, and it also had issues whitelisting google cookies on my icecat during early versions for some unknown reason but then it was patched at some point, and I never used it again.
I don't know the other addons but I hope you're not using ghostery and some "privacy hype" post snowman leaks.

Could do a better job.
Set a local.font, and rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/11-lcdfilter.. if you're not gonna use sub-pixel rendering.

I don't know where else posting this would be appropriate. I apologize if it's out of place.
My biggest problem with modern UI's is that they seem to assume users will be using high resolution displays. And so the big icons (which are far too big even at their smallest available size) which take up limited vertical space, and input fields with arbitrary top and bottom margins with no way for the user to change them; end up cluttering the screen. This is bad for production, because you're left with less space to display all the information you would like at one time and you have more distractions. I dread that Microsoft and Apple's hostility towards UI configuration is bleeding into gtk and qt.

I think hiding information, adding gaps and transparency to things is dumb in general, so I haven't really done much ricing since my early days on GNU Linux.
However, I found some wallpapers that I like (rare for me), so I did it anyways.

I mean, that's my Artix desktop, but yeah, it's an Xorg problem, not really a GNU/Linux problem. It's one of the reasons why a lot of the more mainstream distros are switching to Wayland (other than just using Gnome as their default desktops). I'm pretty sure there are tweaks in xorg.conf.d you can do to mitigate it. Using a compositor like Compton or Xcompmgr seems to help in most cases. Otherwise, your best bet is to switch to Wayland.

Yeah, it's called Window Maker, it's meant to emulate the look and feel of NEXTstep as part of the GNUstep project. I don't really like the project's focus on OOP, but I'll be damned if this WM isn't comfy as hell.
It's really a good middle ground between a DE and a WM. You get most of the helpful features of a DE, like a graphical configuration tool and a dock, but it's also just as modular as a pure Window Manager, and can still be configured through text files.

I find it to be really interesting to see someone using Puppy Linux in the wild. Seeing you has reminded me of so many things. 9 years ago DamnSmallLinux and Puppy Linux were the go-to distros for small and light portable and bootable thumbdrive distros. Not to mention for saving or reviving old PCs. I used both Puppy and DSL a lot, but Puppy had way more features and apps while still being able to boot on a PC with as little as 32MB of RAM. I fuarrrking loved Puppy.
But recently I went to look into Puppy again because I wanted thumbdrive distro for old PCs again and found that soykaf had changed. The home page says there's multiple official Puppy Linux's, but it doesn't explain why a person would want to use one or the other, why a person should choose which one for which task. And it really isn't small or able to run on old PCs anymore. This post from 2018 says it should have a whole gig of RAM!
https://blog.puppylinux.com/xenialpup-released
Now what makes this really stupid is that Puppy Linux still seems to advertise itself as being light, but that page says it MUST have at least 768MB of RAM and a 1GHZ CPU. And Puppy Linux is it's own project made to be light and small?
For comparison, LXLE is a distro that uses the huge and bloated Ubuntu as it's base, which then uses LXDE for it's desktop, and then it has a load of preinstalled full desktop GUI apps for convenience. I currently have it running on a netbook with a 900MHZ CPU and 512MB of RAM and it runs great.
So to recap, Puppy Linux, a standalone distro that had been touted for years as being a tiny distro for very old and weak PCs or for being run off a thumbdrive requires 768MB of RAM and a 1GHZ CPU at a minimum, but the devs think this is not a great experience and that you SHOULD be using a 1GB of RAM and a 1.6GHZ CPU
Meanwhile, LXLE, a distro based on the bloated Ubuntu and filled with a load of large GUI apps can speed along with just 512MB of RAM and a 900MHZ CPU.
It's so sad to me! This was such a wonderful little project that filled its niche so well! Now it doesn't even seem to acknowledge its niche and I can't even tell from its website what niche its devs think it is made to fill. So I gotta ask you >>8734, why do you use it? What role does it play for you? Do you like it? How long have you been running it?
Hitomi · 2021-11-09 02:30
>>8016
>>8738
What the heck is the difference between Lubuntu and LXLE anyway?
It's easy to give into despair at the abandonment of LXDE in favor of more bloated Qt-based components, but it's not quite so disheartening once you realize what the major components are, namely Openbox and PcManFM. Those are still alive and healthy and aren't likely to be abandoned anytime soon. So it's really lxpanel that's the biggest dropped component, which was never really all that impressive to begin with. You can easily replace it with some other lightweight panel alternatives.

Well, the story is long.
I have an Acer Aspire one D270 and it was starting to get old with windows 7, not to say it was second hand. So I decided to switch to Linux, first I installed linux MATE and there was a bug that if I downloaded something, the whole notbook froze, so I got angry and installed Lubuntu, it worked fine, but I'm a retard and thought to myself "Why don't I use mAnjAro!!!".
It didn't work, no wi-fi, no pamac (for some reason) so I said "Fuark it, fuark windows and Linux, i'm using Haiku OS".
And like I said, I'm retarded, so I screwed up the installation, I couldn't install any operating system., Not lubuntu, manjaro, mate. It did't boot from the HDD, and I try using NomadBSD, but It was tricky to get to the desktop.
So, a couple days ago I remembered Puppy linux, and I decided to give it a try because I remember hearing that it's different, it use RAM to install or something like that.
So that's why I'm on puppy now, stupid, isn't?
I don't care that much about my notebook, I use Ubuntu on my main PC ( >>8688 ) And I rarely use my notebook to write something on Writer, but puppy linux is doing it's job well.

No need, awesome actually has a usable default configuration. At most you'll need set the terminal and editor variable to what you use and comment out the layouts you don't need, it's pretty self explanatory. Run prompt, program launcher and whatnot are all included.
>wayland port
There was an attempt named way-cooler. It's dead. Your only choice for a mostly functional tiling wayland compositor is sway, but even then, it's not quite at feature parity with i3.

How's that thing perform with 16 gigs of ram? I recently traded for an X230 with 4 and I'm thinking about upgrading to 8 or 16.

Extremely well. It is a worthwhile upgrade even if your daily computing doesn't mandate it. Reduced read/write operations to storage is nice, be it by keeping your browser profile in memory, caching entire ISOs when uding emulators or building projects with many files entirely in RAM. As I often need to use Windows-specific software, being able to allocate 8GB or more to virtual machines really helps. Linux doesn't handle high memory pressure or OOM conditions very well by default. Even if you don't go for the highest capacity, fastest memory your machine supports, as I did, just sticking in another 4GB stick will double your bandwidth and capacity, which will make any software happier, as you won't be hitting your swap file as early (or at all).

How's Red Hat btw? Or is that just a skin, superficially trying to mask what on closer inspection turns out to be some other distribution?

Just do it. Make backups so you have no reason to be scared. Then install GNU/Linux.

Try IceWM/OpenBox. Use tmux and/or emacs for tiling.

GNU/Linux respects your freedoms and it is more pleasant to use. It even runs games now, with Wine or Proton. GNU/Linux is also faster, more secure and private. You can learn more at https://www.fsf.org/ and https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/
Remember, you can always dual-boot, too.

Last time I tried it, Cinnamon worked well on Debian.

WTF? Using a package manager is literally easier than downloading an installer a la windows. You just install everything once and use a command it keep everything up-to-date.

Another Lain, but I ran Debian testing for a couple of years and nothing broke. I recommend you install apt-listbugs to be sure.

Very nice, I was using global menus with Plasma, I think it looks great, but I had an annoying bug with GTK software where the menu would not appear sometimes, and I had to unfocus and focus the window manually to make it appear. How is it working out for you?
Just another Random Lainon · 2022-12-01 13:35
>>9979
hey, thanks for the reply :D
regarding global menu, i don't think i have seen any particularly consistent bugs. one thing is when i open a window that doesn't provide a menu (e.g. Packet Tracer) the global menu is that of whatever window is underneath it. but that might just be a feature.
I must agree tho that while Plasma looks very good it does do some weird stuff sometimes. what are you using now?
