Horror Movies
Arisu Mizuki · 2018-06-30 07:08
How about some spooky movie recs and discussion? I saw pic related not too long ago and it was super good. The performances were super good, very well done cinematography, and a very compelling family dynamic. Edges more on drama at points and may drag if you don't find the characters compelling, but the payoff is definitely worth it in my opinion. Would love to hear about some more movies in this vein.

I like movies with a twist where the bad guy turns out to be the lesser evil.

Yes it was quite nice, also I can recommend Split and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Damn I miss good horror movies in space. Anything recently released besides the action centred Alien / Predator franchise?

Alright gonna stick to the first two suggestions. Honestly I moved mostly out of the 2d genre. But I wish there was a new Dead Space game.

It's not horror, but if you liked Event Horizon you'd like Sunshine.

Some of my favourites:
>Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Psychological thriller. Inspired Silent Hill.
>Antichrist (2009)
Dark and brooding, like the first half of Hereditary. Gets very edgy but in a sensible way.
>Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978)
Classic horror. Somewhat cheesy by today's standards but great idea nevertheless.
>Pi (1998)
Not quite a horror but delves into conspiracy and mental illness. Amazing soundtrack.
>Blair Witch Project (1999)
Arguably the first found footage style horror. Very subtle for the most part and all about what you don't see.

Horror is it's weakest element imo, but Sunshine was pretty gripping.

+1 for Event Horizon. Love that movie.
The VVitch is arguably a /tv/ horror meme by now but I reckon it was pretty good. Not super scary but definitely enjoyable

Has anyone seen Session 9? Creeped me out in a big way. Little blood, no gore, but incredible mood and suspense to carry the film through. Highly recommended for anyone that gets tired of the usual splatter films.
PS-local art house theatre is going to be playing Mandy this weekend. I wanted to see Beyond the Black Rainbow, but never got the chance. Not quite a horror film, but approaching the subject. Mandy is supposed to be something along the lines of psychedelic horror, so I'll be curious to see how it is pulled off.

I can safely say that Kairo (Pulse) will be the scariest film you will ever watch.

The one movie you won't want to watch again (straight after your first watch at least).
Great film

pandorum as others have said, made by the same guy who dis the original resident evil
sphere takes place underwater, but has a "space feel" to it. On the same note, you might also like "leviathan" if you like horror from the 80's
more recently infini was a space horror movie, though some of the movie is a bit cliche

with the production value of 5 macbooks and several thousand dollars in Starbucks drinks, the movie Unfriended is great... by that I mean I could not stop laughing the whole time
the entire movie is a bunch of normees on facebook, skype, and chatroulette getting fuarrrked up by the dead ghost of a girl they cyberbullied. The entire movie great fun to make fun of while watching with friends. watch as these teens play games like "never have I ever" and crying on chatroulette about how a ghost is going to kill them. All the while, the ghost leaks personal photos and makes people livestream themselves an-heroing
>OMG stacey! I just got an email form the dead girl!!!
>Theres a link!!
>dude just click it!!!
>dude do you even know how to use a computer
>just click the fuarrrking link!!!

It is a good movie, but it is not even remotely scary. The American version is a bit scarier. I like both versions, but the original is the one that has any real depth.

I liked that one. The second one was a bit soyboyish and portrayed an inaccurate depiction of the dark web, but it was still a decent attempt I think.
Personally the scariest movie that I've ever seen as an adult was "Megan is Missing". I was expecting it to be some mediocre B-movie (in terms of production value, it was), but I was shocked about how jarring and realistic the whole scenario was. I had a hard time sleeping that night, which is almost unheard of.

Not in the slightest, just the most popular. If that's your thing though there's Megan is Missing which is a compilation of Skype chats, TV news and the obligatory "tape found in trash can" or whatever.
For a more humorous take on the genre with stunning visuals and some sound effects that should have won a lot of awards, check out a Norwegian film called The Troll Hunter... great fun.

at least you're not the one going around trying to convince people Jennifer's Body was good, even though it is by modern horror standards.

"Les documents interdits"/The Forbidden Files came out in 1989.

I highly recommend this series, it's a bit like The Twilight Zone meets Blair Witch and Marble Hornets, as all found-footage and documentary-style.
Judge Fang · 2019-03-13 12:12
uhhh i might come back to this post to elaborate on these films later, but to make a quick list of the ones that haven't been mentioned:
creep
sinister
the descent
all three are pretty mainstream but i enjoyed them
