internet cams

The images that you can find from random exposed internet cameras are very interesting do me. Do you agree that they create almost an accidental artform? Something very liminal and strange... I especially like the ones you find on japanese IPs, a lot of my favourites seem to be japanese ip cams

>>11909 How do you go about finding these?

Whenever there are cameras, humans shouldn’t be there. Or conform to non human behavior, automatic, inorganic, orderly. I guess this human unfriendly environment makes it look like something else lives there. A cold symmetry, inhabitable refinery, aggressively imposing itself, agree of the sentiment of that being art.

Very cool thread. I'm taken back to the early aughts where I'd pore over Encyclopedia Dramatica articles and read up on how to remotely view camera IPs. Most people I knew did it out of morbid curiosity (or voyeurism,) but I never indulged because of the lack of scruple involved. I agree in that these images seem liminal, almost paranormal from how they're framed as well as what they're pointed at. I wonder if anyone would ever set up an IP camera just to have it viewed by some enterprising user. I think this premise would also be an intriguing concept for art installations or similar projects that involve computer networks.

>>11972 Hey mate, I was thinking about USB sticks embedded in mortar when I wrote about art installations earlier. These were fairly primitive means of filesharing that carried risk and intrigue, allowing curious members of the public to interact with such devices. I would find a parking lot, factory, train station, heavily wooded area or anywhere else that is usually industrious but also visited by periods of eerie silence or a lack of activity. This would work seamlessly with my urbex aspirations, because I would collect intermittently captured frames and use them in a sort of scrapbook or catalogue. Personally I'd use the evoked sentiments of such jarring perspectives to inspire my other works, like novels or screenplays. As for a proper installation, you could use a similar approach but pipe live (or archived) feeds into randomly Bluetoothed displays you'd find without a password. I'd think of it like guerilla art but with a cybernetic twist, something I'd find rogues doing in a William Gibson book. If I were a web developer, I'd embed links to obscure websites or logic puzzles so others could participate in an ARG. Alternatively, I'd also use feeds and interpret them with various AI models, generating even more spooky and disparate images. A good YouTube channel you might like is BaphometKun, as he is the one I think of most when I ponder users that apply such imagery to their creative prowess. Apparently he survived abuse at the hands of a cult, so it would make sense that he'd use haunting imagery to illustrate how he felt.

Is there a good way to watch multiple cams of your choosing at once? >>11973 You would have to make it read only so no one can install malware on it or just set up a wifi hotspot that goes to a site hosted on the device that people can download off of.

Most of the cameras you find give you the sense you should be whispering.

>>11909 I went searching through these. There was one cam I would check now and then, which was set up in some old couple's bedroom, out of morbid curiosity. One day I went on and saw the old guy splayed out masturbating. That was the end of my days checking random IP cams.

I'm a big fan of traffic camera maps like this one: https://cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/iframemap.htm All the cameras with a + symbol are live, while the - symbol cameras take a picture every 5 minutes.
