>>11705 Fallen Angel by Cabanel I find picrel hilarious and profound at the same time

>>11709 I like how the sheep Jesus saves here is a black one, instead of typically portrayed white. It gives the painting another degree of depth for me.

"What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said to him, "Let him be crucified!" Then the governor said, "Why what evil has he done?" But they cried out all the more, saying, "Let him be crucified"

>>11705 You mean repackaged pagan imagery under the Christboi label? Here is an illustration of the divine justice inflicted upon that asswipe who chopped down the landmark tree associated with Donar AKA Thor.

>>11726 what are you even talking about? How are paintings of events associated with religion exclusively "pagan imagery". Even if they are, its only because pretty much every pagan chose to become christian neo-pagan wannabees are annoying as hell
Wintermute · 2024-08-25 22:33
>>11737 The iconography is reappropriate pagan imagery. No that isn't quite the case. It is thought there was some willing converts early on though it is kind of unclear but a lot of this was due to manipulative threats within Christian beliefs of damnation for not following their god and by the 4th century pagan religions were illegal to practice which really isn't a choice. Then you also have things like the witch trials where people primarily women were killed for their folk medicine practices because of a misogyny brought into society and a scapegoat sought out for the diseases going on like the plague. For example look at this video on Norwegian churches design it is full of pagan imagery. Obviously these converts didnt abandon their pagan beliefs entirely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJm86fzxG8s

>>11726 >>11738 >calls a painting made by a russian in the 19th century "repackaged pagan imagery". >unironically uses "Christboi" and the Thor meme. >"reveals" to us that pagans kept some of their traditions post-conversion, as if that's some truth nuke, and not widely know for centuries. >says that the witch trials mainly targeted folk healers because of misogyny, a myth literally made up by second-wave feminists. Go back to r/atheism. Better yet, since your appreciation for paganism totally isn't just a way for you to be a troll contrarian, why don't you create your own thread? I'm sure it'd do well.

Don't know the official names of these but the first two are Patriarch Nikon of the Russian Orthodox Church and the latter is a boyarina being arrested for being part of the 'Russian Old Believer' schismatic group that rejected Patriarch Nikon's ecclesiastical reforms which were enforced by the state. I love Russian art. It's often sort of sadly ethereal to me.

I think the Renaissance era's fascination with elaborately posed drama and tragedy was a bad influence on our common image of Christ. I tire of seeing him depicted as a doe-eyed victim in pain. Christ is the one who defeated Satan, spread goodness fearlessly, endured hell, and overcame death. He's a hero. That's what I want my sons to see.

>>11706 Abram telling Sarai to pretend to be his sister, so that the Egyptians don't kill him when they inevitably kidnap her. https://thejewishmuseum.org/collection/26685 This website complains about the inaccuracy of the garb, but I think that's an unfair accusation to levy at a 19th century Frenchman. What do you like about this painting?

This painting is by Nicholas Roerich and is titled "Repentance."

Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery Polenov He sold this painting for 50,000 silver pieces to Alexander III and built himself a cottage in Polenovo. Swag dude if you ask me.

>>12481 I kinda like it, but I can't resist to say it looks like AI slop. The way those lines are smoothed/blurred nowadays is a sign of soykaftier prev-generation AI. I actually noticed a lot of older painters have AI-like artifacts in their works. Not sure if it's just a consequence of those AI being trained on their works, or maybe our whole history is fake and the narrative of humankind is entirely AI generated, but whatever.
