VIS - Visual Arts Media

The Oracle · 2024-05-12 17:39
Does anyone here do the Visual Arts Media major at UCSD (University of California San Diego)? I think it is a very underrated Visual Arts program and there are some very good professors. What do you guys think?
Neuromancer · 2024-05-12 21:30
idk i didnt really go to college but good luck in art school though

Is this where you get handed some crayons and psychology basics so you can make weird ads and banners with mixed couples and atrocious art?
Y.T · 2024-05-20 12:55
>>11533 No it is not. This is a program mostly for filmmaking and photography

>>11531 i spent quite a bit of time near mandeville while there. i think if you're interested in it, you should major in some engineering discipline and minor in vis arts
Unknown · 2024-05-30 01:03
>>11556 why is that preferable? I don't understand
Arisu Mizuki · 2024-05-30 04:40
>>11570 Because vis is gay. By majoring in engineering you will be very autistic but more employable. By only having vis as a side specialization you don't put all your eggs into that highly flammable basket while offsetting some of the engineering autismo with the little bit of vis instead of going full glitterboyry, Most art and design can be self taught anyway and you don't need to be around for long to network which is what you need to have a career in arts. Additionally opening the path to get into practical effects and possibly landing you a gig at L&M.

>>11531 Art school in general is fuarrrking stupid. It made more sense before the internet was really widespread and finding resources to learn how to become an artist was a lot more difficult, but these days, especially with our culture, art school basically just daycare for rich kids. In the industry, from what I've heard, people care more about what's in your portfolio and how you are to work with than what magic piece of paper you have.
Unnamed · 2024-05-30 20:10
>>11574 Yes, that's pretty much the situation. The state of art schools in the west is abysmal right now. There's of course some exceptions like Goebelins and some other tiny unknown academies that will teach you how to hold a pencil and how to layout soykaf properly but generally, even if you go into something more illustration and animation focused you'd be lucky to get an old school teacher for a couple lectures who'll mention fundamentals. This goes even or especially for the expensive places. They're now run by cunts who're hellbent on "decolonializing" those disciplines and other dance your name nonsense and the only reason to go there it to build connections with people who are or will end up working at the companies you want to get hired by. Just be cautious of not getting sucked into their silly ideologies if you've got a brain of yourself. The artists I've met who are good were good before even going to any school. They were just posting their stuff on deviantart back when it wasn't flooded by inflation fetish porn and artstation wasn't a thing then and just kept working on it. Also read loomis and that dinotopia guy. And you're correct on the portfolio thing. Nobody gives a soykaf any more about your degree. Even those big stuck up places are now only about what you've done so far, what you can show for, whether you can deliver and who you know and maybe if you aren't a straight white male or can pretend not to be one. That said, the industry is fuarrrked and your goal in it should be to find a way to bullshit people into giving you hundreds of thousands of $ for a logo that looks like a preschooler made it. Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3DbamlP3Tk

>>11574 I teach film/video and I've been telling my students that since I started. They get passionate and want to go to college for it, but I can't in good conscience encourage them to spend 4+ years rubbing elbows with glitterboys in a low-consequence environment while blowing a fortune on knowledge they can now get for free online. Your portfolio and experience will be better if you spend those years working full time, spending all your spare time and money on your craft. I look back and everything truly impactful I learned was picked up making personal projects outside of class, not because of class. College kids also tend to get railroaded into internalizing the "professional" way to do things without fuarrrking around enough to develop an intuition about how to break the mold, or even how to apply beaten path sensibilities off the beaten path. They're perfectly equipped for mediocrity and not much else.

Everyone should attend a visual arts class at some point. Create something!

>>12167 As an art school graduate I agree, especially the bit about internalizing business more than art; self-expression is seen as "public masturbation" and people are taught to put the audience's needs above their own. The business of art is dominated by soul-less and money driven con-men. I think that it's really only worth your time if you have the option of graduating with 0 debt, and you want to have an in-person mentor to teach you a specific concentration that may be hard to find information about online due to ideas of obsolescence or otherwise pure gate-keeping [*cough*oil-painting*cough*].
Nemissa · 2025-06-05 05:57
How's being an art graduate today? Is it any different than before?
Cutter · 2025-06-07 07:13
>>12609 the issue with 3dcg now for me is that it's overblown and out of proportion in terms of detail a lot of the time. its not subtle at all, similar to CG effect heavy movies. very much oversaturated. i'm not saying theyre bad, just wrong/too much. it's like final fantasy designs sometimes used to be, where theyre just overdesigned
Lord Nikon · 2025-07-04 18:40
>>11531 I'm applying there for a master's degree this year. Wish me luck!
