Mamoru Oshii's interpretation of Ghost in the Shell is great and all, but you weren't supposed to take GITS so seriously. It's kind of a heavy story, but it has light moments too. In the Tachikoma's case, they're used in the narrative to contrast their viewpoints from being purely robotic, AI powered mechs against part-mech cyborgs and non-augmented humans. They aren't cutesy, they're child-like and naive, and decide to maintain their good spirits even when confronted with the worst that humanity has to offer because of the bond they experience with the cyborg characters in the show, who treat them like any other person working in there, even picking favorites. I think they're closer to a vulcan child rather than jar jar binks. Maybe pay more attention to the show, the tachikomas really explore a dimension of AI technology that most sci fi shows never get to.

>>10937 (this may all true but they are also cute and silly)

They are physically modeled after jumping spiders with the personalities of jumping spiders: intelligent, inquisitive, alert, and almost childlike.

I would LOVE to know how many posters ITT are on the artistic spectrum. My problem with the tachikomas isn't their childlike nature--that's a cool if slightly cliche idea--my problem is they take it up to 11, and then some. it's also exactly the kind of thing that poe faced, risk averse military people would want to tamp down on. the filler ep where they explore the base? so many ways something like that could go wrong. >>10939 love jumping spiders don't love tachikomas

>>10933 The major wanted them to be that way

>>10940 Not that artistic myself, but my autism knows no bounds... What I got from them was that they were not just military hardware, but also an advanced AI research program. The episode where they explore the base, help the girl find her dead lost dog and the episode where they argue about who experienced what all provide background on them. Especially when they trick the robot told to guard the sniper AI so they can jack into it and see what it does for fun. They have an arguement about use and practicality and purpose and then start to develop a sense of mortality even though they don't "die." In the plot intro of one of the SAC episodes, the text reads that bato questions them about a song they are singing and they tell him about how the song is about a calf being taken to be slaughtered (Dos Kelbl also known as "Dona Dona"), which is not different from them being taken to be de-armed and taken out of action. For more context, this song is a yiddish song about a bound calf contrasted with a swallow that flies through the sky, the doomed calf vs the free bird that it could never be. The major even talks to bato about how they are advancing too quickly, and they treat gaining XP like a game. They have advanced weapons capabilities and the ability to adapt to situations, which makes them practical, but like well trained child soldiers they might become unpredictable which is a risk for a law enforcement entity.

I loved fuchikoma but tachikoma was just annoying to me. I thought logicoma were really good, they had awesome designs and were cute without being over the top/annoying

they are awesome, they are the best character of the show on all imaginable metrics and whatnot and their personality makes sense in the setting they are in (why would you EVER make your weaponized AIs be anything but "childlike"? why would AI in general ever be anything BUT "childlike"?) and jar jar binks is awesome too you mr.edgy serious realism loving snob

>>10933 I used to think so in my teens and early 20's. Now at 30 I thoroughly "get it", or lost the barriers causing me to need to reject them.
