thread to talk about movies not made in Hollywood's 24/7/365 constant churn of cynical soykafty cash grabs and soulless slop

Liked The Bad Sleeps Well by Akira Kurosawa.
The ending was unique IMO.
Will probably watch Rashomon.

Some resources to find foreign movies :
* https://www.youtube.com/@MosfilmRuOfficial/videos : For russian movies, if you sort by most popular you'll find plenty of movies with english subtitles. Particularly recommend Operation Y (Shurik)
* https://35mm.online/en : For polish movies
* http://rarefilmm.com/browse/ : Plenty of countries
I think polish and czech movies deserve more attention than they get. A lot of the movies from the past century take a uniquely dark and twisted approach to the story they tell, even mainstream movies. It really shows in the posters of the movies, there are countless examples. Even western movies' poster get a darker twist in Poland.
I particularly Panna a Netvor, which is like a dark surreal take on Beauty and the Beast. It's the kind of movie that leave you with a funny feeling when you finish it.

Just rewatched Battle of Algiers. It's about a lowlife who joins a Muslim ghetto rebelling against French rule. It's pretty good overall but has some annoying pro-FLN propaganda in it. The shots of the Casbah are really nice and sometimes it feels like your watching actual combat footage or a war report rather than a staged film. You feel like your following these people in their jihad against the occupiers, like seeing women dressing up sexy so they can plant bombs in cafes and kill n ormies. There isn't a lot of character development though and you never get a good sense of these people beyond their activities as guerrillas and terrorists.
Anyone know of other movies about a bunch of people fighting a dirty war in a sprawling urban mega city?

There's anime like Code Geass, Terror in Resonance etc. but yeah nothing like Battle of Algiers. There's no way you could even make a film like this now. I read this article by a college professor who screens it in his film class. He said in the past students were almost always sympathetic to the Algerian and Ali but nowadays more and more of his students are more sympathetic to Colonel Mathieu or feel the Algerians and the French are as bad as each other. Islamic guerrillas aren't the good guys anymore that's for sure but maybe youth culture has changed too? Gen Z tends to put faith in authority and prefer order to chaos.
Munich feels like an anti-Battle of Algiers where Spielberg takes the opposite view to Pontecorvo but its not really an international movie.

The Brothers Sun on Netflix. It's the American-Chinese triad family drama & experience that's entertaining for all.

Can recommend Bicycle Thieves (1948, Italian), The Cranes Are Flying (1957, Russian), Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven (1975, Russian), Sans Soleil (1983, French).

Recently watched Sanjuro. Loved it despite the short runtime.

I'm not like a film buff or an intellectual, but I really liked this movie for some reason. The cinematography, the calming atmosphere despite it's subject matter, and the almost improv-like quality to the acting... it's a good movie to watch multiple times and still notice new things.

Someone invited me to watch this because I was in the military at the time. Afterwards they asked me how accurate it was (I have nothing to do with the IDF so idk) but some of the stuff in the movie hit too close to home.
The whole movie is a dark joke about the military, told through the eyes of a bunch of IDF troops who are in a human resources and pay office at a remote base. The characters are pretty much archetypes of the typical people you might find in the military.

Does it cover the IDF murdering Palestinian civilians or is it a Zionist film?

Does it cover the unprovoked Palestinian terrorist attack that murdered 1,200 Jews, mostly civilians, and the taking of 200 hostages, including elderly, children, and women who were susequently raped in captivity? The Palestinians deserve everything they're now getting.

The sad thing is there are people in liberal media echo chambers who actually believe this.

There, I corrected that for you.

look its a war people die big deal why anyone who doesn't live there cares this much is a little beyond me.
IDK theres a lot of good movies. Das Boot was pretty fun. Wolf Warrior. The Russians bang out bangers too, Andrei Rubelev was top notch. Alexander Nevsky, too.

You might be thinking of the other IDF themed comedy Foxtrot, which I thought was not as good as zero motivation. Foxtrot got derezzed in Israel, because of a scene where they kill a bunch of civilians they thought were terrorists.
Zero Motivation is less about the politics of Israel, and more about the "boring" lives of troops and their hopes and dreams, which is more universal in its message.
