Tearjerkers / emotionally appealing shows

Dox · 2023-07-11 20:05
What do you guys think of tearjerkers or shows that have the main goal of causing certain kinds of emotions in the viewer? I have been watching some shows lately that do this really well but have a somewhat lackluster story. Would you consider this kind of show to be good if it made you feel something, even if the story is somewhat lackluster? Do you believe emotional appeal to be a good thing in general or do you dislike it?

If it treats those emotions objectively, yes. It's worth.

>>10800 If it makes you feel things, it means that it's well written, in a way. The story doesn't need to be super intricate or complex

>>10803 is it noble and Good to make a movie the sole point of which is to make you feel X emotion ? If you hate porn, I think you could still accept that there can be skillfully made porn, well shot and scripted and put together. That doesn't make it Good. I think OP's question is whether the goal of causing emotions is a noble one. Personally idk, not sure I'd like that kinda moobie.

>>10808 I'm the op, and I didn't really mean it that way. It's just that many shows have a few incredibly emotionally appealing scenes, but that's kind of pretty much what the show is about, the rest of it is buildup. If you removed all the 'oh soykaf' scenes, you would probably consider the show to be average at best, but with those they are often hailed as immaculate masterpieces. I'm asking more on how much value you guys give for these scenes and these kinds of shows. A couple examples of this would be that one scene from Oshi no Ko with Akane (no need for spoiler tag, if you watched it you know), and the Code Geass R2 finale.

I never watch an anime or read a manga (or even play a game) just to cry. There has to be something that grabs me first, mostly a cute girl with black hair, or a theme I like. Then I would really enjoy any emotional moments and it does make me cry. I hope my post makes sense. I don't know how to phrase this better.

>>10800 Girls und Panzer uses the dual combo of bishoujo & mecha to get to me. That Sakkijarven Polka soundtrack with the BT-42 chase is beautiful.

>>10800 What shows? Ideally there's a good balance of story and emotion, but a lot of the time I'd watch either. Steins gate and welcome to the NHK are some that I thought did both pretty well. Steins gate especially. NHK didn't have as good of a story, but it was really good at making you feel things.

>>10803 There is a type of storytelling that I consider cheap and not good art at all which relies on predictable Pavlovian triggers to induce an emotional response. I don't respond to this type of story because it's just a retread of stories that have been repeated forever and I don't care about the characters or the situation. It's not only that it's unoriginal, it's also that the audience is signing up for a certain experience and are expecting this payoff of a catharsis as if it's something you can schedule like going to the dentist. The shows or movies that get me have to do it in a way I wasn't expecting. Not necessarily as in plot twists but when I find myself feeling something for a character I wasn't expecting to feel for (more often it's two or more characters connecting in some way) then it gets me and then it's satisfying in whatever way. Pic related.
