Project: watch all of 90s anime.
Naomi Nascimento · 2023-05-22 21:52
So yeah, I have a pet project to watch all anime from the 90s
To be specific it has to come out between 1st of January of 1990 and 31 of December 1999. So I luckily just have to watch a little bit of one piece but have a big chunk of detective Conan and a lot of Dragonball z (I'll probably start that one from the 1st ep when I get to it because I respect it's legacy)
I'm starting with TV anime to get the biggest chunk out of the way, I'll be going both chronologically and supplement it with extra anime from later to keep me sane if the shows are too bad to stomach alone.
So far pic related are the best shows I'm seeing, I was familiar with ninja cats die to the Famicom game and watched some ova for Ramune before so that's fun

That's an interesting fact.
It's very much a formulaic kids show, but it has it's charm so it's kinda nice to have in background (I realised that many of the shows were obviously made for young children and/or to be in background in the living room so I'm fighting my habit of paying 100% attention to them. Even though I don't know Japanese I've seen enough anime that I can generally follow the plot by ear and sometimes checking the screen.
When there's actually an interesting part I'll pay attention.
Bob Arctor · 2023-05-23 06:46
any estimate on the total number of series or hours of content? sounds like a huge undertaking full of many hours of soykafty anime and bad translation once you get past the most popular series.
Fred Nurk · 2023-05-23 15:54
>>10697
I try not to think about it.
The project has no limits other than I die or I don't care anymore so I feel that there's no rush.
The whole idea is because I love the aesthetic of 90s anime so the longer it goes the better in some sense.
There are about 330 anime TV series, but obviously some are 26 ep and some are detective Conan, so it's hard to tell.
Myanimelist can measure it so I could start a fresh account and add all of 90s anime but I'm not really In the mood to do tedious things to measure how tedious the other thing would be

You are undoubtedly going to be missing out on a lot of untranslated shows and short anime that were only ever broadcasted next to certain obscure variety shows. Also cant forget anime that got split into two 50-episode shows, where the latter half always never gets subs, or even RAWs uploaded to any site.

Also and most importantly, he would be missing the OVAs.

It's a flexible project that can go on as long and as far as I want at my pace.
I do plan on getting to OVAs when I'm mostly done with the TV series.
I Also wont lose sleep if I miss some shows, saying I watched all available ones or 90% of them is pretty good already
The reason for the project is that I love the 90s aesthetic in anime the most and wanted to get more of it.
Plus it's actually a boon in some way that this is an endless quest and if I really want to I can go full kenny lauderdale and start learning Japanese and buying the VHS tapes with lost media.
I doubt I will go that far, but I can be very anal about my hobbies so in 10 years or so who knows what I'll be up to.
I also already have some big ones in terms of length under my belt since I watched them before:
Legend of the Galactic Heroesb 110 ep+ extra stuff
Sailor moon 200 ep
all TV, OVA and movies for Slayers + Lost Universe, I even read some of the novels
The Saber Marionette series including the Saber Marionette R OVA
That's all the big ones I can remember, there's probably more.
I'm more of a scholar of 90s anime than a guy with OCD who want to watch everything.
I'd rather read a book on the production or reception of some historical events in anime than watch an obscure show that was created to advertise some candy or something... That said I'm not against watching that either.
I'm also open to discussion of something from them, like for example the episode from the pic related of Nadesico. I sometimes rewatch it. It's a shame what happened to the franchise afterwards.
John Titor · 2023-05-31 22:19
I'm starting to realize that the thing I actually liked in regards to aethetics, animation and stories was more like 1994 to 2002ish than a clean decade.
Well, figures that this boundary was arbitrary. I guess I'll brave through the early 90s to the evangelion season to experience how much of a breath of fresh air it really was at that time
Obviously there are exceptions like Nadia and Sailor moon that are great, but generally it seems a bit meh so far.
Do you know any other good shows from 1990 to 1994?
Just another Random Lainon · 2023-06-01 02:15
>>10731
If you ask me then Irresponsible Captain Tylor is the best anime from that period. Thinking something comparable to Nadia and Sailor Moon it would be Yu Yu Hakusho
Agent Richard Gill · 2023-06-01 02:26
You could run into problems with this, especially with long running series like Hajime no Ippo or Detective Conan. And what about shows that technically started in the 80s and ran into the 90s, like Ranma 1/2?
Fred Nurk · 2023-06-01 02:39
>>10733
For those I'll decide case by case. Good ones I'll watch in full on r I'm done with other stuff. Bad ones I'll only watch the episodes that came after the beginning of 1990. They usually have recaps so I'll catch up like that or slim through the manga if there is one to get a general idea
I don't grudge difficulties, thatakes a challenge fun
>>10732
Already watched most of Tylor, but there's some OVA's left
You Yu Hakusho will definitely be a beacon of light during these times.
Zhora · 2023-06-20 05:36
OP here. Slayers movies and OVAs are a great palette cleanser in this task.

I like Ninja Scroll (1993).
Ninja Scroll's story and style was influenced by the works of novelist Futaro Yamada and Western spy fiction, with Jubei's character being loosely based on the historical figure Yagyū Jūbei Mitsuyoshi.[4][5] Kawajiri considered it difficult to adapt Yamada's works into animation, and opted for a simple depiction. He stated that he found simplifying the storyline to be the most challenging aspect. The choice to contain lots of expository dialogue was considered necessary, due to younger audiences not being familiar with the culture of historical dramas.
The film was originally meant to consist of two films, being 45 minutes each. The storyboard was written this way, which is why there are climax scenes in the first and second half of the film.

and for what? to feel a fun stimulation? pathetic.
i am geniunly bemused why u devote yourself to an effort that would grow yourself at a ridiculously slow rate compared to actual work.

Rurouni Kenshin (yes, this is from the '90s even if the first time many of us saw it was on Toonami in the 2000s)

OP here
Thanks for reminding me of this thread and the project. I got a bit sidetracked with the other project and changing jobs. If did get some OVAs under my belt but serialised TV anime was a bit much.
I'm still at work but i probably could squeeze an episode in during the last hour when there's not much to do.
As for my reasons it is because I want to do this and nothing more. I seek no other benefit other than the one contained in the tast itself.
From your statement It feels like the idea of "growing yourself" is generally hijacked by the concepts of maximizing social and monetary capital. This is something I do for myself specifically because there is no particular force moving me towards this destination.
Masami Eiri · 2023-12-05 19:51
Hey.
It's been a while.
As far as the project goes, it's continuing on. I've decided instead of a strict chronological order to stick to a similar genre for the time being. The way I see it it can provide the similar feel of evolution of tropes and aesthetics, perhaps even more clearly.
Right now I was feeling like the magical girl genre was just the right thing to cheer me up a bit.
I've finished Mysterious thief Saint Tail and am going through Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (I also checked out the manga for this one).
Saint Tail is great, But it's best to know before hand that this is essentially a love story built in the backbone of the formulaic magical girl problem of the week show. There's not that many canned animations to pad out the runtime and they change and improve as the series goes on. There is only one transformation sequence and it doesn't evolve so if that's something you care about be warned.
All in all most of her abilities are just very intricate magical tricks so it's easy to forget that there is any supernatural things happening at all instead of exaggerated reality.
It kinda drags on in the middle (the relationship stuff takes a break for like 5 episodes after getting somewhere great which felt kinda frustrating) and the last villain is only a two-parter story which feels kinda rushed which is not helped by the time skip at the end having a 5 minute runtime instead of a full epilogue episode.
Still, the aesthetic, score and atmosphere makes the show really great.
I'll put off my thoughts on KKJ until I finish it.
The main reason I bothered to make an update is actually because of Gundam Wing.
Am I insane or is this show's plot absolutely terrible?
Like melting my brain terrible. Like nothing happens for 2 episodes and then 3 episodes worth of things happen in one episode.
I really like the 90s Gundam aesthetic (Gundam X is my favourite Gundam) but it's actually painful to watch for me without turning my brain off.
Bobby Newmark · 2023-12-06 20:32
>>11198
No, Gundam Wing is hilariously dumb. Let's not pretend that most Gundams are masterly written though (especially if we're talking about Tomino's crap). Best watched in English dub for the entertaining overacting.

Ranma 1/2 is fun. The first 10-15 episodes are kind of slow with shonen fights for a romantic interest, but when it's at its best it's like a witty, perverted kung fu looney tunes

Yeah, that's probably gonna be a great one when I get to it.
Me and my gf are currently in love with the 2022 version of Urusei Yatsura and are watching it weekly.
I'm currently going through the Ramune & 40 franchise.
It's certainly an interesting direction to gradually go from a simple children oriented original series (thought it does become significantly better in the second half after they gather all of the guardian knights) to an 18+ raunchy OVA with soykaf like having naked women driving mechs submerged in water to "absorb the impact" and naked priestess because it clothes would "constrict their magic" and a young girl named Lemon in a romantic subplot. Oh and the OP is explicitly a sex song. A very catchy one at that.
I actually first discovered the franchise by finding thus song on YouTube

sometimes i'm not sure if japan even has moral standards for kids. it seems everything short of literal pornography is acceptable in content targeting young boys
fsociety · 2024-03-03 22:33
The common argument would be that it's the same in "the West" when it comes to violence but not the same when it comes to sexual stuff.
The reason for it is cultural. Pee pee poo poo and juvenile sex humour is more acceptable in Japan (crayon Shin-chan for example). I'm not sure that the opposite where Japan rejected certain stuff that was prevalent in western media of the 80s and 90s is true though, but I'm open to changing my mind on the topic.
The OVA is 18+ so I'm assuming you technically wouldn't be able to buy it if you were a kid in Japan the 90s. It came out in the 1997 and the original anime came out in the 1990 so it was targeted towards kids who grew up on it... Then again it's actually a direct sequel to a TV anime level raunchy R&40 FIRE that came out in 1996...
On the topic of kids and media I remember that I once wanted to buy a 18+ (I think it was Fallout 2) game CD in the 00s and the guy at the counter asked if I had my parents permission so I bought a different one instead.

I wanted to make a separate therad for this, but this website is so broken that it won't let me create a new therad, so I'll post it here instead.
Recommend me an anime romance movie (or series, but preferably a movie) that...
A. Is not homo,
B. Doesn't require you to watch a prequel series to get it.
I have alerady seen: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Your Name, A Silent Voice, Josee The Tiger And The Fish, Weathering With You, 5 Centimeters Per Second (the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life, don't recommend stuff that has no pay off).(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST ,Do not whine and cry about 8chan, lainchan.jp, "quality", "invasions", "newfags", mods, bans, or kalyx outside of /q/.)
