Feeling old yet?

Churi · 2023-01-16 18:20
This year the PlayStation 2 will be as old as the Atari 2600 was when the PlayStation 2 first released. The Playstation 2 released in 2000, when the Atari 2600 was 23 years old. This year, the Playstation 2 will be 23 years old. Share your experiences you've had with the Playstation 2, if you have any, Lainon!

I actually still have my Playstation 2 hooked up to a old CRT and play it help myself go to sleep on sleepless nights. I have some very dedicated gaming achievements I did with it like beating racing games without upgrading my car or 100% completing expansive JRPGs. I’ve considered doing the hardware modification where it reads from a hard drive instead of discs but never felt the need to.

>>10290 Some of my earliest and fondest gaming memories involve the PS2. My cousin owned one and whenever I'd visit we'd play whatever games he'd have laying around, which were mostly fighting games and GTA. >>10291 Which games are your favourites?

>>10291 >I’ve considered doing the hardware modification where it reads from a hard drive instead of discs but never felt the need to. Considering the laser is eventually going to burn out, you might need to do this soon unless you're confident you can replace it. Idk about the slim model, but fat ps2 don't need any internal modifications to do this anymore. Just make/buy yourself a fmcb card with opl and a sata hard drive adapter.

Some of the games I grew up with on the PlayStation 2 would include Kingdom Hearts, Crash Twinsanity, some Rollercoaster Tycoon game released in 2000 I think, Digimon World 4. I had more but it was so long ago that I can't think of more off the top of my head. I greatly appreciated the PS2's backwards compatibility with PS1 games, of which I also had a few, mainly Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, and Spyro the Dragon. Hard to believe that it's been 23 years since the PS2 first released.

Have very beautiful memories with the ps2. Playing soulcalibur with my family, going to the store and being greeted with a catalogue of nearly endless games for very very cheap. Games at that time seemed to break the barrier of "just games". I remember being amazed at how big the world was in Tony Hawk American Wasteland, seemed even bigger than what i could percieve in the real world being a child in a not so safe neighborhood. Every game was a new world, with its own rules, aesthetic, stories. I feel videogames sort of become more homogeneous than before but it may be because of the huge amount of new releases.

ps2 slims were dogshit. the fat ps2 was the last decent console made, everything afterward was designed obsolescence jacked up to retarded levels personal experience: found a working fat ps2 that had been dropped and apparently dragged(scuff marks) in an abandoned house. plugged that fukker in and threw in some old game and it works like nothing. still use it watch dvds whenever im feeling a hunger for past. compare that to the ps2 slims which i got as a kid which unable to read discs probably around the the better parts of the same year i got em.

>>10290 When I was a child and my father dumped us we were briefly homeless and lost all our possessions, except my PS2 and that console is what made life bearable. Kingdom Hearts, Persona 3, Jaws Unleashed, Ratchet and Clank, Crash Twinsanity etc. I have so many memories of being sat in front of a CRT playing all day. We could barely afford to get any games, especially new releases, so I ended up buying a lot of PS1 titles and playing them too, like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2 etc. PS1 was my first console, but PS2 is where I really matured and got interested in more sophisticated content like MGS3, Persona etc. But the game that really left a massive impression on me was Silent Hill 2. That game was on another level and totally blew me away. I still replay it about once every year.

Apparently like a lot of you Lainons, PlayStation 2 was my first exposure to console gaming. It was way more graphically impressive than anything my dad's computer could perform. I have fond memories of playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted (not even racing, just messing around and running from police), Simpsons Hit & Run and Kao the Kangaroo 2--among other titles. I actually still have that same PS2, and it's in surprisingly good condition even after all these years of use. I've also purchased a thing or two to spice up the experience. A BlueRetro controller adapter from RetroScaler. FMCB memory card. SATA network adapter (no more discs yay) Component cable from HD Retrovision. Best component cable you can currently buy. That's about it. I'm looking forward to buying the digital video mod from PixelFx when it comes out. My wallet weeps for the future. >>10307 I mean, the community has made the Slim--at the very least--bearable. MX4SIO for example restore certain functionality like internal storage, but does it with SD cards. >>10290 You meant to post this to /inter/ right?

To this day I still don't understand the hype over the PS2. The PS1 had a lot more good games to me. In fact I feel generally let down by every console from the sixth console generation. In retrospect, it feels like everything fundamentally wrong with the games industry today actually metastasized in that generation. After the experimentation of 3D gameplay in the previous generation, but instead of learning good lessons from it and refining ideas to a sharp edge in the next generation, developers went all in on explosive development budgets and the end result was an endless torrent of unfinished products, poorly-realized 3D gameplay concepts, and shallow cinematic games.

>>10290 My sister had a PS2 and I got to play on it too, the console wasn't mine, but I bought some games for it, which I owned. In no particular order those were: Age of Empires, Heatseeker, GTA Vice City, Mafia, Some obscure racing games, some obscure ski/snowboard game and a few other's I can't remember anymore.
Junichi Fujiwara · 2023-05-16 01:20
found a PS2 while dumpster diving dropped it at my friends house because mine was too far and I had to go work. I should really pick it up... the TV and PC that I found in the same haul work so I hope the PS2 will work aswell
Wintermute · 2023-05-16 14:58
>>10290 I find an object being old as something to be proud of, it's still a fantastic system to play even today and now we have easier access to the games as ever before thanks to emulation. I still have the one from back in the day in my closet, even if it didn't work I couldn't bring myself to throw it away, too many memories on that thing.
Ivan Petrov · 2023-10-07 01:37
>>10290 What about Xbox then? Of course, the question is now which Xbox? Original, 360, One, S/X? Hmmm... at least, the naming of Playstation makes sense compared to Microsoft's attempts at a naming scheme.
Cat Mother · 2023-11-22 01:21
No Nintnedo console? You are missing out, man. Can't go wrong with Mario and Zelda....
Spike Spiegel · 2023-11-22 01:24
I loved the PS2 so much, really enjoyed playing Ace Combat Zero on it. Loved the PS3 too, for Armored Core 4A

>>10290 I'm 34 years old. Here is something that will make many feel old and nostalgic. It will also anger people when they remember how it got scrapped for that crappier dashboard.

do you guys think the 7th gen will ever be retro? even the 6th gen is having controversy on being called retro
William Holtzer · 2023-12-20 22:46
i suppose companies will use retro as a marketing gimmcik in the future to raelease newer soykafty rereleases of classic games on the 7th gen
Morpheus · 2023-12-20 23:13
>>11196 RRRRREEEEEEEE The blades system UI was so much fuarrrking better and responsive. I don't remeber the same of the current system US but it's not as good.

>>11228 >do you guys think the 7th gen will ever be retro? Absolutely NOT! It completely changed the landscape of gaming and was the step into modernizing it to what standards and practices have become staples that has shaped gaming today. Such as having them always connected to the internet, game updates, DLC, purchasing digital copies through an online store on the console, and online play being more accessible than ever just to use some examples. >even the 6th gen is having controversy on being called retro Yes, because a few things such as online play was starting to see a lot more use including the massive jump from the very experimental 5th generation of video games. You also started to see more games that focused on being an earlier cinematic based experience through their storylines than before as well. I like to think of the 6th generation as the bridge between retro and modern gaming. The reality does remain that it's the only possible final "retro game generation" that could exist. At least in the way that we think and consider retro games to be as of now. In the future things could very much change in the way that people look back to define what exactly makes a video game, "retro". Now try to take things into the perspective of someone in their 30s who got their start on a NES, then getting a Game Boy, SNES, and Sega Genesis all brand new while they were the current generation. Being immersed into the culture through gaming magazines, VHS tapes, and game stores throughout the 90s. I remember thinking how crazy it was with the Sega CD that games were on CDs instead of carts. Despite all of that hype, I also was glued to reading all about the next generation at that time waiting for the "Ultra 64" to come out. Also interested in the Sega Saturn as I'd get promotional magazines and VHS tapes in the mail back then. Then out of nowhere out came the PlayStation. Which ended up being my first 5th generation console which was bought for me for Christmas that year as the Saturn's price was higher and what ended up being the N64 wasn't out until the next year. Anyways, at this point I had experienced the difference from the NES to the PlayStation. That was so HUGE for me during the mid 90s. With games only getting better throughout the generation towards the end of the 90s. Then getting to see footage from the upcoming Dreamcast absolutely blew me away from a graphical standpoint. Games were getting as impressive as the top games in arcades. Then you know the rest with PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox eventually coming out right after. I ended up getting all four of these consoles all one year apart from each other. Dreamcast in '99, PS2 in '00, and GameCube in '01, and Xbox in '02. Something else about the sixth generation of games. This was my final generation of peak interest in gaming. Something lost me going into the 7th generation. That excitement I used to have each year was fading and pretty much gone around 2005. I'm not saying I was getting tired of video games, I still played my games all the time. I just wasn't caring anymore about getting anything new. Thinking that I just didn't need anything else new. The 6th generation was that step up graphically that was honestly enough for me. I didn't care about the realism of the next gen in comparison. I was someone who didn't only care about graphics anyways, I loved any 2D powerhouse that came out in the 5th generation. I still even was playing my NES games along with other older consoles in the 2000s before even knowing that there was a "retro craze" that was happening and about to get bigger during the next decade. I wasn't even aware that people collected retro games and went fuarrrking crazy over them until around 2014. I simply just played the soykaf out of what I had and would sometimes pick something up for cheap that would look interesting or something I remember wanting to try out when I was younger. I'm also very appreciating over how far emulation has become as well. Allowing people to go back and play so many good games without being destroyed financially by resellers. Ironically I have tried out some PS3 games in more recent years through an emulator. Want to talk about the PS2, I definitely enjoyed the Devil May Cry games. Thought Dante was a bad ass character. So, I played DMC4. Still need to make my way to play DMCV.
The Fin · 2023-12-22 14:26
I will never consider anything younger than the NES to be "retro".
