Aw that's nice. I wish there was some Lain art around my city aswell. I can't do graffiti so I might use up some of my Lainchan stickers instead.

That makes me wonder about the possibility of the guy not browsing lainchan and that even so he still praises Lain in meatspace.
Jim Hilger · 2017-09-04 05:13
Nice. Already into graffiti and stickers, but I guess I'll be making Lain stencils for my city as well now.

i've always wanted to get into graffiti, but my artistic capabilities and a fear of getting caught have kept me out. any general tips?

Don't overcomplicate stuff early on. Just come up with a name and tag soykaf up to get comfortable with feeling noided on the street, later you can get into simple throw ups and 2-3 color pieces.
And don't procastrinate. just go out with cans, even if you'r not planning on tagging. You'll get to doing it anyway. first few times I got friends to keep me company/look out. That helped too
But I'm very much still a toy so you will probably find better tips on the net.
>>969
Haven't done stencils yet, but will post some stickers
Junichi Fujiwara · 2017-09-05 02:08
I was going to paste a bunch of homemade lain stickers around /cyb/ locations like deep woods, abandoned buildings and sumps etc. Places where people explore. I made a thread about it some months ago.
But I only put up a couple and then I got really high on ketamine and lost them one day - in my room - where the fuarrrk are they i have looked everywhere I honestly think they entered a time warp because I looked everywhere. And photo paper is expensive.
Anyways, I still really like the idea of advertising in obscure meatspaces. Once I get more photo paper I'm going to repring those..

Holy soykaf this actually made it onto the wired... never expected it up so soon.
Did you see the blue ones too? I know I put up more than just the one color, but I can't remember what other ones I used.
>>696
Guess I'll have to put up some more?
>>698
Thanks, I made the stencil in about five minutes using some construction paper, a pencil, and an exacto knife.
>>867
Yeah I'm still mostly new to the freehand tagging thing...
>>915
Sadly the stencil was trashed along with others and about half of my paints. I was interrupted by some guy who didn't see me right away and I thought he was local police, so I ditched most of the disposable gear before going over to chat him up, and I left just as I remembered that I had abandoned about $30 worth of paint... Turns out he was just a motorcycle guy who was fascinated by the graffiti. Oh well.
Tomorrow though I will post a remake along with the source image for everyone to see. It was fun to do.
>>916
Nah mostly I just lurk
>>966
Let's all love lain!
>>968
Bring tape, stencils, only the colors of paint you'll need, and a buddy. Gloves if you don't like paint all over your hands, and snacks are optional but recommended for a good time.
Stenciling is super easy. If you can pick out hard lines and trace them, you'll do fine. Remember you'll only have a one-color contrast.
Also earn to fast-talk, come up with a good excuse beforehand that isn't necessarily legal but isn't as bad as vandalization. Most people won't like you sticking around their property but as long as it seems innocent, like having a smoke somewhere private or getting lost, they won't mind too much. Further, admitting to something you probably weren't supposed to deflects attention away form what you were actually doing. People trying to hide everything they do are more suspicious than people who give up a little bit of guilt.
>>969
You weren't addressing me but if I can find any old stencils I've left lying around, I'll post those too
>>970
This lain has solid advice. Stickers are pretty neat too.
Any other questions I'm happy to answer, I'm just glad the community found my tags.

what are some good materials for making stencils? i bought a bunch of paint for 1$ a can, but I don't have a stencil and I suck at freehand, I thought cardboard might be good, because you can fold it, but how does it hold up? is there something you would recommend as a good stencil material?

Empty pizza box, if you're somewhere where it'd make sense to be carrying one. Just make sure you hold it upright and remember to pretend there's pizza in it.
Apoc · 2017-09-11 06:56
>>989
The paper ist called "Avery Zweckform Etiketten".
The quality is pretty meh.. but ok for random sticker tagging.
>>992
I made a portfolio with 2 pieces of cardboard and some tape. Works pretty good, but the ink sticks to the cardboard after spraying, which is a bit anoying.
Acid Burn · 2017-09-11 06:59
My first stecil, I actually sprayed on something. Pretty happy with it.
I felt extremly good after spraying it. It's fuarking addictive

Generally, you want to use very light and extra sticky paper stickers if you print at home. If you use glossy paper or such things they come off more easily, don't rip when someone pulls on them, the colors fade quicker and with all those downsides they are more expensive. The Print itself looks better of course but if you plan to spread them outside your goal should be longevity.
If you absolutely need glossy stickers order offset printed ones online. Again choose the lightest paper as it is harder to remove and annoys whoever has to do this.
I started with streetart around 15 years ago (no kidding) and some of those paper stickers are up for 10+ years. However all the glossy and offset soykaf is gone after a year without a trace. Your decision.
If you really want it to last there are other means as well, but it'll be expensive and high volume only (like 1000+). Look up "egg shell stickers" then, unless someone demolishes the whole fuarrrking building these will easily outlive you.
Jean Dupont · 2017-09-16 08:30

I made these, IDK if the qr code works, but it is supposed to link to the lainchan homepage, also a stencil
Shogun · 2017-09-17 20:01
Made another sticker/stencil design you can use. Also got myself some 80cm * 120cm cartboard so I can put this up pretty big if i get such a big stencil on location. Thinking of repeating the stencil through a tunnel, alternating my writername and LAIN above each one

For small stencils like the one in the OP, which is not much bigger than a hand, I use sheets from a book of stocky construction paper. They're durable enough for a couple uses, can easily be drawn on and cut out with an exacto knife, and the book they come in keeps things looking innocuous. I find cardboard difficult to work with because of how bulky it is, but it's not as limited by size.
Also I fuarrrking love all these stencil and sticker designs, I didn't think so many people would be into lain streetart but in hindsight it's so obvious...
Maybe I'll see some of you out on the streets!
Jens Hansen · 2017-09-22 00:34
Holy soykaf, I should have come back and checked this thread sooner. Didn't think it would have garnered such a response. I stumbled across this place on my way home from a trip to the pacific northwest, recommended to me by a guy in Seattle. Just a massive abandoned plant of some kind that's pretty much fallen apart. I wish I had tagged this, but at the same time it just makes it that much cooler that I didn't. Made me feel connected to something more than myself....

This guy >>1046 knows his soykaf.
Any thin stiff plastic will get you the most durable stencils without sacrificing precision.
Great for small soykaf you want to get a lot of mileage out of.
If you prefer working with card I recommend manila file folders.
Decent paper and they are easy to carry around.
