Miss kobayashi's dragon maid is the first moe anime i've watched and it surprised me in a positive way, it's really relaxing to watch.
Could you point me towards other good moe anime, Lain?
By "good" i mean honest anime, if they want ecchi they show ecchi, if they want sex they show sex, and the focus of the show is in no way about edging or the fabled episode where people will finally kiss. I just want to watch adorable people chilling.
Wintermute · 2017-05-03 14:24
I'm not sure if it qualifies as moe, but New Game! is pretty nice and relaxing to watch.

If you liked Dragon Maid, you will probably enjoy Gabriel Dropout. It's relaxing in a very similar way. I loved it.
Another animuh I strongly recommend is Kino No Tabi (Kinos Journey). Then again, that one's probably not so moe.
Both are great!

You are looking for iyashikei anime, 癒し系. Type it into your favorite search angine and you will find a lot of results. Try Hidamari Sketch, Aria, Flying Witch, Non Non Biyori (especially Repeat,) Kokoro Toshokan, Aiuro, Morita-san wo mukuchi, Yokohama kaidashi kikou
Sipho Nkosi · 2017-05-04 14:22
Non Non Biyori is very relaxing. I would also recommend Kiniro Mosaic which is very moe and fun.

There's something about 80s' anime that really seems grounded. There's plenty of slapstick and silly moments, but the characters have a depth and realness that most moe shows outside of the era completely miss.
Rumiko's shows of the time have plenty of tropes (arguably pioneers the tropes of today), but Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku have such a good vibe to them, while staying grounded enough to give the many ridiculous moments more punch. Yawara and Igano Kabamaru are also highly recommended. Maybe this will miss the mark of the 'moe' you're talking about, but seriously, check this soykaf out.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Aria, Azumanga Daioh, Flying Witch and Eve no Jikan. Some of them are no necessarily moe, but they're still in the same line of comfy slice of life.
Or just go with >>241

"I can't understand what my husband is saying" is top chill. Each episode is around 3 minutes each, though, so if you're going to download it don't be put away by the small files.
It's about a really normal couple just chilling.
Linda Lee · 2017-06-01 20:16
Azumanga Daioh is my all time favourite and Non Non Biyori is just lovely.
If you're still wanting more after that then Is The Order A Rabbit? is full of cute characters doing nothing.
Neuromancer · 2017-06-05 10:48
Tamayura and Amanchu! are both good iyashikei shows similar to Aria.
Tamayura shares a director with Aria; it started with a 4 episode OVA and later got a full 12 episode show (I've only watched the OVA so far). Amanchu! focuses on the friendship between members of a scuba-diving club, and it's manga has the same author as Aria. Amanchu!'s soundtrack is by GONTITI, who also worked on Yokohama Kaidasishi Kikou. All of these shows take place near or on/in the ocean, which helps to make them even more relaxing.
Anamika · 2017-08-25 06:18
>>594
Tamayura technically takes place by the Seto Inland Sea, not an ocean. I was also just a bit off on the number of episodes: the OVA has 2 sequel seasons with 12 episodes each, a couple specials, and 4 short (~50min.) movies.

I've tried to watch Nichijou, it's really "comfy" but the lack of plot and the sketches made me drop it, I might take it back again some day, it's just that I have more "important" shows on my backlog.
>>223
I think you might be the same anon that recommended it to me while you were watching it on a X200 during a train trip. I loved it, looking forward to the new season and hoping they don't ruin it.

The manga is superb. 14 volumes total whereas the anime is only like 4 episodes not bashing the anime, just saying that there is so much more to the manga. Maybe not that moe but very comfy nonetheless. Perfect for reading in the bed before falling asleep.
Plus, IIRC, I didn't find it boring at any point, more like felt sad that there were no more chapters to read. Rare for a manga like this.
Hououin Kyouma · 2017-09-11 08:12

They aren't missing anything. They aren't trying to be realistic any more than Airplane! is trying to be a serious disaster movie. This constant blanket expectation of strict realism (or what people think is realistic) is something I can't stand about Western anime viewers.
Jet Black · 2017-11-11 20:43
as others have recommended K-on is fantastic, ive watched it at least once a year for at least 5. its so relaxing and therapeutic to me.
Dox · 2017-11-11 21:32
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou / Girls Last Tour, currently airing, is super comfy, in a depressing kind of way.
Two girls traveling through a ruined city in a distant future filled with WWII-era technology, scavenging for fuel, food and water, occasionally meeting another person/being.
The manga is even better if you can read moonrunes (it's only half scanlated).
The last chapters took a turn for the worse so don't expect a happy ending.

Switch · 2017-11-12 08:16
The Castle of Cagliostro. That practically created moe.

Lain didn't say "realistic" but rather "realness". Something can be campy, absurdist, fantastic, anything but realistic and still have realness that one can relate to.
Look at Squidbillies. An absurdist, ultraviolent cartoon about rednecks evolved from cephalapods who were landlocked as the ocean retreated from their land millions of years ago. Time and again I've read posts from people who grew up in rural Georgia or other equally enlightened parts of the American south and they say every time, that show really hits the mark.
Jet Black · 2017-11-14 19:20
Sora No Woto... it's like an apocalyptic K-On. While it has that comfy moe feeling, there is a lot more to this show for you to sink your teeth into.
Plot takes a bit of a nosedive by the end, though folks don't tend to watch this sort of thing for the plot regardless.

I have seen the first and the third ones you posted, may need to check out the second one.
if you have not watched it yet, planetes is a great show too, its about a bunch of astronauts who haul junk in orbit
Anamika · 2018-01-27 23:38
>>1688
Is Planetes "moe?" (that's what OP specified). It's got some intentionally naive idealism as expressed by that girl astronaut but I didn't think that's what "moe" was.
Planetes is one of the most realistic space series ever written for TV and it's an office comedy... what the hell.
Crazy Jake · 2018-01-28 01:38

its on the edge, could also lean towards slice of life i guess?
similarly to the subject of gabriel dropout, uppote is about a bunch of guns (schoolgirls) who have silly adventures. its one of those "cute girls doing cute things" although it is a little more on the sexual side (like the questionably rapey finish elf girl and almost forced sexual innuendo for comedy)
I also just watched squid girl which is a comedy, but still seems like a good anime about a squid-girl trying to take over the world but ends up having to live with humans and has an addiction to shrimp
i also don't know if they would be considered MOE, but definitely cyberpunk, but Shangri-la which is where a girl tries to take on a mega city from her jungle hideout with a band of people who live in post disaster japan, along with another main character who is a tranny, and the parallel story lines of a child hacker and a few other key member's of world politics
fsociety · 2018-02-04 07:38
flying Witch, hands down.

second "girls last tour" and "made in abyss". here's a weird one:
>"humanity has declined"
it might not be explicitly moe, but something about it reminds me of girls last tour in particular. it has one of those post-apocalypse settings that's so far removed from the present that ancient tech becomes magic and mutated creatures become monsters (see: fallout, girls last tour, adventure time, etc.).
the main girl is some kind of diplomat that brokers human/fairy interactions. she's funny in a cynical kind of way, and she basically just plays the straight man until she gets some characterization towards the end.
the plot jumps around a lot in structure and tone. you get some episodes that are just resolving fairy hijinks, some slice-of-life stuff in the human town, some more "quest" type episodes where they go out and explore the wasteland for loot or whatever, and it ends with two unusually serious flashback episodes about main girl's life in fairy-diplomat school. unfortunately it only had one season, so even though a lot of these mini-arcs and vignettes would make interesting spin-offs in their own right, there isn't much time to explore it all. still, my impression was "i want more of this" rather than "why did i waste my time watching a bunch of random bullsoykaf", so it at least worked for me. ymmv of course.
i should mention: the episode order is a bit screwy. idk if this was intentional or a broadcasting fuarrrk up. you could watch it in release order like i did, but i'm sure some thread on some forum out there has figured out a better way.

I remember really enjoying the art style and the moment-to-moment interactions of the characters ; but I have precisely zero memories of the actual story.
This was definitely a missed opportunity, but it's still good enough that I would recommend at least giving it a try.
Tequila · 2018-02-07 03:00
>>1717
I liked some of the episodes and the cynical humor and really dark and serious undertone of the episodes. but then there were those that were just so absurd that it was not even really entertaining (like the fairy shenanigans episodes) still would recommend this series.
I would also recommend pic related:
>In a post-apocalyptic future, where the world has turned into a desert and the remains of humanity live under the rule of the Third – beings with a third eye on their foreheads. Accompanied only by her tank's AI, Bogie, Honoka tries to make a living as a handyman on the edge of civilization, and she tries to avoid resorting to violence as much as possible; but when situations demand it, she and her sword become a force to be reckoned with.
its the story of a girl and her tank who travel the world and have post apocalyptic adventures
Junichi Fujiwara · 2018-02-07 05:56

My thoughts exactly. I mostly liked it while I was watching. In retrospect it has a ton of flaws but for whatever reason it's stuck with me.

If you want iyashikei (癒し系) healing anime, I can recommend some classical. There isn't much anyway:
ARIA
Flying Witch
Hidamari Sketch
Mushishi
Non Non Biyori
Sketchbook ~full color'S~
Tamayura
If you know want what I call "exatanded" iyashikey, kind of close to Kobayashi-san :
Aiura
Amanchu!
Azumanga Daioh
Usagi Drop : for the father part
Haibane Renmei
Hanayamata
Gochūmon Usagi desu ka?
Kiniro Mosaic
K-ON!
Yama no Susume
Arakawa under the bridge
I think you won't like all of this, just pick what looks nice to you.
