VR chatting network used to communicate with each other.
What does everyone think?
What are some other good VR chatting games out there?

I'm thinking that a VR UI to an IRC client would be the good perhaps
H.R. Giger · 2017-11-28 18:36
It just seems like an MMO without the game. The point of instant messaging and voip is that it can be done without actively being somewhere. VR chatting requires you to actively be looking at a client (and have the client open) to participate.
Also no Linux client lol

A VR MUD/MOO/MUX/MUSH client would be spectacular. Bonus points if you play a Cyberpunk game with it. It'd be the genre coming full circle.

If I get a VR set, I was hoping I could make a cyberpunk place for lainon's to get together and hangout!

I'll never be interested in any communication medium I can't use while fapping/listenig to music, period.

I am a fan of this idea. I believe VR chat features a YouTube theatre, which could make for a great stream room

I'm curious about the effects of going from 2D-and-text to 3D-and-sound, when it comes to online discussions. The fact that most interaction on the net happens "inside the head of the viewer" (to the extent that you just read others' writing) is I think one of those unexamined axioms of online interaction. When it gets removed, or at least destabilised, who knows how things will change?
No matter how distinctive the tone of thread, the way its participants communicate, it will always be flattened in the process of being read. My interpretation of your point is bound to be different if it comes with a whole load of intonations, gestures, pauses, &c. attached to it.

it would be cool to figure out how to do this while keeping >>1414 and >>1416 in mind. i don't like voice chat or video calling for a number of reasons. mainly because i find it easier to multitask with text chat, but also the flow of conversation is different when you aren't "live". just a personal preference but the result is i'd probably never use vr chat even though it seems like it would be cool in theory.

Have you guys checked out JanusVR? I went exploring (no headset, just mousewise) in it a while ago and it's pretty fuarrrking sick, even for something so immature. At one point they were even working on integrating IPFS but I dunno how that's progressing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7TVj7_rBH4

I definitely agree re: voicechat, but to a certain extent you can never escape the importance of realtime. Even here, being in a thread as the conversation grows is a kind of "live", albeit a slow-moving one. I'm sure we've all had that experience of opening a 70-reply thread, and after reading the third or fourth comment really wanting to dive in to the conversation then and there!
But even if this temporal issue, or whatever you want to call it, can't be fixed, we can definitely do better than what we currently have. I think the linearity of a text thread (whether in a chatroom or imageboard) kind of reduplicates, hard-codes, the irreversibility of "live time". VR space has very few hard limits on it though, except that it be three dimensional, so it doesn't necessarily have to do this. (Of course, 2D cyberspace also has way fewer limits on it that the ones we impose ourselves ...)

This would be interesting in terms of communication when VR becomes more advanced, i can see something akin to the use of avatars to represent you as a character. think of it like second life, but with full immersion and VOIP capabilities that are integrated with something like the xbox kinect to replicate human interaction. You could have teleconferences or meetings in virtual worlds, akin to the way that people interact over the net in GitS, voices and characters could be changed at will, imagine going for a virtual job interview with your avatar set to generic chad #15 and the interviewer wants to be a spider with a loli riding it

it would be really neat if the vr world could be altered by users. i want to go around graffiti-ing basilisk images on things to crash people's clients.

would garrys mod be a good way to possibly integrate VR into chat, also how would one go about that?
Im wonddering now if i could fins a way to integrate my eye tracker into something like that pic related, its more just a novelty right now, but it has potential to be a semi VR, it tracks the IR reflections off of your retinas or something

>garry's mod
isn't that just basically the source engine with an entity spawner? i never played with it so idk. unity supports vr natively now, you could just use that with less effort than hacking around with hl2.

i'm keeping an eye on them. i like that they're focusing more on creating a standard than just a single vr "game". that being said.. what i've seen of this standard seems absurd to me. isn't it XML based? why would they do that? maybe i'm just misunderstanding things.
come to think of it.. things like this have applications beyond vr. an open standard for vr chat would have to include functionality for things like uploading player/world mesh and updating your position in-world. it would be something like the pseudo-open standard doom multiplayer has become at this point.

It's a custom markup language, and I think it's because they want to be able to write a whole 3D world within a html file, which can then refer to arbitrary external objects or call javascript or whatever. Maybe that reasoning's wrong, or there are better ways of accomplishing this, that was just the impression I got from looking into it a while back.
The thing that continues to get me about JanusVR, even though it's such a simple gimmick, is that hyperlinks are portals. I dunno, it really feels like you're traversing a big unexplored network as you go link to link through various worlds. Sites that link to each other are then connected in a way more tangible way.
Also I hope they pursue the IPFS thing, since a big 3D world (especially one with lots of nice ornamentation) is going to be a big file, and everyone will need to help each other out for it to be fast. If there was e.g. a lainspace, I for one would certainly be willing to put up some hdd and bandwidth for it.

anyone know how to find the ipfs hashes that are supposed to be in their eth tokens? I've found some data but none of the when converted to base56 looks like an ipfs hash.

Do you know of any places in JanusVR that usually has people? The few places I've looked haven't had anyone.
Agent Jones · 2018-04-07 01:15
VR can be better than reality in some areas to me. I enjoy chatting. When you can see peoples movements it gives me a social feeling. VR is a dream of mine come true. Can't wait for it to get more immersive. I don't care for "real life" as much after getting into VR.
https://bigscreenvr.com/
I can recommend BIGSCREEN(pic related). It's a chill place. Its based on the idea of being in a virtual space with your pc desktop in from of you. You can share everything that's on your desktop. Put it on a theater screen. Play a game kinda like a LAN party. Watch a movie. Share interests by browsing the internet with others. Its imo the best social VR experience you can have. I host a room called "The WIRED" sometimes. You can feel free to join.
VRChat is also good but in no way serious. It's a place to be autistic and act like a caveman. You can really feel what a virtual world really looks like. It's in no way like the perfect virtual world we want. Anime, traps, dead memes, furries, autism. Is what that place looks like. Run around talk to people. Do weird stuff you wouldn't do in real life. That's it. But it is still fun if that is what you're into.
If anyone has a lain model avatar ready for export let me know. thanks.

I was iffy about VR (never getting into full dive, frequently using topi eye tracker system) what is the best headset that is not google spyware the VR experience and what kind of set up is the most versatile (like no proprietary apps or specialized app stores)
it seems like microsoft made one that is pretty sketchy (hardware is soykaf, but the interoperability with software seems alright), but overall easy to use and shows promise
it seems like most people use the vive or the oculus, are those worth looking into or not at all?
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2018-07-20 17:00
>>2237
both the oculus and vive aren't (to my knowledge) usable from a quick glance at their architecture, the whole platform is locked down and controllable by their respective controlling entities, the oculus one for instance had a problem where they shipped the wrong crypto certificates with one of their updates, resulting in many users being locked out for more than a day [0]. I wouldn't trust any of these providers for their lack of openness in their platforms. To my reasoning, no, it's not worth getting into any of these popular VR platforms. I would keep an eye out for less proprietary projects, but they all seems too be too far behind, so I don't bother at all. VR is too immature anyways.
