Any other lainons do photography for fun/profit? What 'genre' do you love to photograph the most.
Just another Random Lainon · 2017-04-19 16:28
I do it for profit.
I like experimental mostly, but industry of course don't adopt this kind of thing. But I also like landscape and documentary.
We could do a thread with anons photos... no? That would be interesting. I could take some pictures just to post here (I also already have to test some HDRMerge stuff and Rawtherapee, so...).

I can't because people will use reverse image search and deanonymize me... but I could do something exclusive to this thread some time.

I do nature photography and nudes. Both are fun, but I wish I had a MILC or DSLR.

So I did something fast, more abstract... not really good, but you get it.
Setup was a 600D with Cosina 100mm f/3.5, plus ND filter. The camera was with Magic Lantern firmware, so I set it to auto-bracket. Then I merged with HDRMerge. Then Rawtherapee (with Cinelog-C DCP). Then I got on photoshop to use some ImpulZ luts and the final touches. The classical glitches is from gimp/audacity workflow. I could have done it 100% on open source actually, idk why I didn't (I guess gimp is just boring for dodge/burn effects).
I may do some more elaborated ones.
ps. although probably no one will want to use it, licence is CC0, btw

You have a canon camera? If you have, see the CHDK page for your model. It may unlock RAW photos and auto-bracket. With these two features, plus a tripod, you can do really fuarrrking great images using HDRMerge.
But you could also get an old used canon camera, such as the 550D. Tip: buy only the body. The lens you should buy manual lenses. I recommend Helios 44 + an M42-to-EOS adapter.
If you're on USA, you probably can get this kid for about $300.

looks like a tad too high of a range on it.
If you're combining photos try just 1/3 stop up and down and see how it comes out. HDR needs to be subtle to work really well.

I have a Kodak Z990 I'm only just starting to use. Reading about f-stops and film speed for lighting conditions, or whether to use RAW or JPG formats turns my head, it's confusing.
Yu-ichi · 2017-06-28 01:22
>>701
It's not complex, it's actually pretty simple.
Analog photography work by burning silver on the film. Digital photography works by receiving electric signals on the sensor.
You have 3 forms of light control on photography:
1- Lens Aperture
2- Shutter Speed
3- Sensibility (ISO)
That means:
1- How many light will pass through your lens to reach your sensor or film. The more you open your lens (diaphragm), more light will come, but also less depth of field (this "bokeh" effect, search for this keyword and you'll understand what I'm saying). It is controlled by a number, called f-stop. Most normal lenses have average of 3.0 of aperture (that is, how much light your less pass). To get the background without focus, you need a "faster lens", about 1.8 or less of f-stop.
I suggest you keep always the lens wide-open, unless you're doing landscape.
2- How many time your photo will expose your sensor or film to light. The more time you let it expose, the more your photo will have light. But it also generates motion blur. It's measured by divisions of one second, for example, 1/50. I suggest you always (except on landscape or artistic effects) use the same size of your lens, so, if you're using a 50mm lens, you should use at least 1/50 to achieve an still photo. If you're using an 200mm lens, you should use at least 1/200 of shutter speed.
3- The sensibility is how capable your media is in capturing light. For example, on film it's the sensibility of the silver. Now, you have to understand a concept called SNR (Signal to Noise ratio). Every signal has an noise. The more you amplify the sensibility, the more you'll get interference (noise). On photography is the same: the more ISO (sensibility), the more noise you'll, but it will also get you more light. I suggest you set your lens to maximum aperture, the shutter speed to the size of your lens, and then (the last config), set the ISO. This way you'll get you the best image, with the least noise as possible.
You don't have to worry too much. The suggestions I did above is the same I use for at least 5 years working (professionally) with photography. When you get this 'triangle' of configurations, you'll do it automatically, you'll see.
>RAW or JPG?
Aways use RAW. I suggest you use a software called Rawtherapee to process it.
Wintermute · 2017-06-28 23:34
Yes, all analogue photography. I usually do landscape stuff, but because where I live is generally uninteresting, I don't actually do photography all that much. It's very on/off. It keeps me from getting better, but not much you can do living where I do.

I can see why you think that, when it comes to understanding the nature of our lives, in my experience, it always falls one of two ways "we can't do anything about it because they'd never let us" or "you are the change you want to see in the world".
This essay was put together in the midst of my own crisis when I managed to understand the western world as a simulation. Keep in mind, I'm not referring to the universe simulation theory, but rather that the western world is a bubble, with illusory walls, that keep us from truly understanding the damage that our quality of life inflicts on the quality of life of the majority of the rest of the world - the simulation describes the neo-liberal global-capitalist system that victimizes the many, for the benefit of the few, while keeping the few distracted and suggestible. All of us here are accomplices to these injustices so long as we live in North America and are not actively resisting it. Which is why resistance occurs with vegans or anarchists and etc. It's why I make work that directly supports local and national business, because I can't ethically (or according to my own moral code) condone practices that victimize people for my personal comfort, but I also acknowledge that the system is so far reachingly abused and ubiquitous, that to try and avoid it would be fruitless. So I do what I can, to show that a global capitalist system does not have to be extortionary and victimizing. I don't have a problem with capitalism - I have a problem with zero regulation and the harm being done to others.

Unlike many others lainon, my photography is essentially news/reporting. Which means that I often work in conditions where you rarely have time to try many configurations and angles before taking a picture. Which is good because I'm far from knowledgeable in this domain, and even worst in postprod. My aim is to get informational pictures, compared to the more "aesthetic" ones. I use this comparison, even though I'm sure we'll agree that both are important and there aren't any real opposition. But I try from time to time to take some funnier pictures and experiment around.
