2002 UNIX Developer's Desktops

Anonymous · 2015-10-29 01:39
Desktop thread! Well, not really our shitty arch+i3 stuff, but some of the best and brightest's. Article is https://anders.unix.se/2015/10/28/screenshots-from-developers--unix-people-2002/ Here's Dennis Ritchie's for example.

very cool article, the desktops with prominent GUIs really bring back memories of the cheesiest of photoshop filters and effects to create desktop icons and wallpapers

>>13149 I am really into CDE, which I would really like to use more, but unfortunately, I cannot get it working with my FreeBSD install.
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 02:55
I've been using a Silicon Graphics workstation from 1999 as my desktop lately. I was still in middle school when this thing was doing real work for a bio company.

>>13149 Funny, I have seen this on Facebook yesterday.
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 11:10
yes i saw it already would be more interested in a 2015 version
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 12:05
>>13151 >>13153 Good stuff, from back when unix GUIs were intended to be fully-featured rather than bare-bones.
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 13:55
More screenshots from the same era, except they're from everyday-users instead of prominent figures: http://www.linux.org.ru/gallery/archive/

>>13149 Could you please tell me how to make Windows 7 look like that?
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 16:49
>>13182 I don't really think it's possible unless you're switching to Windows 98.
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 16:55
>>13182 You could switch it to Windows Classic shell, replace the icons and desktop background, and modify start button file etc.
Anonymous · 2015-10-29 17:01
I bet Rob “CmdrTaco” Malda participates in desktop threads.

>>13169 Fully-featured? Compared to what? I can see they have more stuff than tiling window managers and such, but they seem comparable enough to XFCE4 and similar Just curious.

>>13213 It's not so much about what they could do compared to new GUIs, it's what they were trying to be. Consistent, with integrated applications, and rigid structure. Proprietary systems targeting expensive hardware. These days, discounting Apple, unix GUI development is universally open source, and carries with it all the design philosophies of open source. Customizable, single function, "lightweight". Everybody is supposed to put together their own system, and so there's no standard complete system. KDE is sort of trying to be that, but it's soykaf .
Anonymous · 2015-10-31 11:59
>>13222 >gnome >customisable >single function >lightweight what the fuck?

>>13184 Thanks!
Anonymous · 2015-10-31 14:02
>>13254 GNOME is really extensible through plugins. Sadly they break compatiblity all the time and will continue until GNOME 4 comes out. KDE project is trying to make KDE more modular and lightweight.

I really like the fact that Ritchie’s file has been slightly corrupted, and the historical feel that this gives.

What are some good old-school Desktop Environments that still work on modern distros?
Anonymous · 2015-10-31 18:01
>>13265 CDE, enlightenment, iceWM, and fluxbox.
Anonymous · 2015-11-01 01:47
>>13265 Window Maker is also cool.

I spent today setting up a graphical xorg environment on my P3 box. Gonna try OpenArena on it at some point https://p.teknik.io/2306 full specs for the box. It's dual-socket, but I haven't gotten around to putting in a second processor yet.

>>13149 I love that most of the responder's replies include "my desktop is pretty boring"
Anonymous · 2015-11-02 06:04
>>13321 It'd be a hell of a lot easier to use lainchan if there wasn't a HUGE POINTLESS SPORT THING NO-ONE CARES ABOUT at the top, it sorta loads the P3 all the way.(NEW YORK HASN'T FALLEN THIS FAR SINCE 9/11)

Anonymous · 2015-11-06 00:22
>>13257 They don't break compatibility all the time. Certain API elements change from time to time, so plugin developers need to whitelist compatible plugins. For one reason or another, they never do the changes, adding a string in a json file in 98% of the cases, on time (seriously, there is a freeze window where they have more than enough time for that)

>>13559 I would have used luakit, but building it is a pain on debian. Oh well, qutebrowser works too.

>>13151 I can't help you with *BSD, as I don't have a functioning system anywhere here, but I found a copy of Solaris 10 in a magazine if you want it. It comes with CDE and GNOME 2

Digging this thread up. What DEs are they using? Old versions of KDE and GNOME and something, right? They look cozy as fuarrrk and are probably lightweight. 8/10 would install on a laptop.
Anonymous · 2015-11-20 10:05
footprint = gnome cog and/or "K"s = KDE
