Modern and secure cpu

intel has the ME feature, amd installs the PSP in all their last products. what x86_64 platforms are powerfull enough and free ? amd fx(am3+)? fm2+? fm2? am3?

Someone might correct me, but I think C2D is slightly faster than any PSP-less AMD hardware. There was some talk a few years ago about official support for disabling PSP, but I don't think anything came of it.

I guess the ARM based stuff, eg Pine64, is worth a look.

>>9993 ARM has TrustZone. PSP is based on TZ. The expensive alternative to all this stuff is PowerPC. The cheap alternative is used hardware.
Neuromancer · 2020-01-24 17:51
Do you know if it's present on all ARM hardware?
Dujour · 2020-01-29 09:40
Pinebook can be ran on 100% free software including all firmware.

Please explain to me what is so important about the CPU? Sorry, Im the FNG.

>>9977 FX chips should be the last decent chips (as long as you aren't chasing triple A games) with no known ME/PSP type vulnerability, namely the 8300+ series You can see benchmarks on YT where it actually performs quite well despite being so old, meaning if you aren't planning to play triple A games, it should last you up to 5 years if you bought it today. Some will call me retarded, but I also decided to go with it for my very first build this year(never built one before) based on advice from my friend

this thread is wrong all modern CPU have microcode. If you don't TRUST AMD. why would you trust AMD CPUs even it has no PSP when there could be a back door in the Microcode or in Silicon. <irony> I Trust an Chinese company because they use ARM instruction-set </irony> https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-9058-everything_you_want_to_know_about_x86_microcode_but_might_have_been_afraid_to_ask#t=262 You need to trust the whole chain. each comprised element will kill your security. THE NSA is running fake businesses to infiltrate high value targets. They don't care about crypto nerds and anarchist. Old hardware might be safe because they have ended the programs to hack them. its not like they have inherent more secure design. A simple Webbrowser and web request has more then ten million lines of code involved. we are reaching a complexity level where i can be sure that there is vulnerability. Complexity is the real issue. we should preserve a web/1.0 for information and basic communication.

>what x86_64 platforms are powerfull enough and free ? None. But there's a libre processor that is under development. https://libre-riscv.org/ A processor featuring OpenPOWER ISA (they recently switched from Risc-V, because it is fake "open source"). Full source code for the processor is and will be available, same for GPU drivers. Funding comes from EU horizon programme for research and innovation.

>>10216 Here's a brief explanation. http://bike-zine.org:70/release/1/hardware-drm.txt Further reading. https://www.devever.net/~hl/intelme TL;DR The most popular ISAs all include subsystems that subvert the OS.

>>10234 >this thread is wrong all modern CPU have microcode. This isn't related to microcode. It's well documented that the most popular processors include subsystems explicitly designed to subvert users. Intel Management Engine is one example.

>>10234 >>They don't care about crypto nerds and anarchist Yet. It's in their dna to witch hunt. They can't stop. Once they get who they're currently after they'll come after the lesser problems.

>>10065 Does it worth? I am looking for a cheap notebook between 100 and 200 dollars. I find out that it has low resolution, only 2gib ram. Had anyone have expierence with pinebooks? Is it good choice for coding on c/rust? (without bloat ide?)

>>9978 That seems to be the case in terms of single-core speeds at the very least. There is also Core 2 Quad to consider, remember that FX-8350 has only 4 FPUs for its 8 cores. >>10448 You'll probably be better off in terms of performance and freedom if you buy a used ThinkPad and Libreboot it. Pinebook has specs comparable with Raspberry Pi 3 and there are a lot of benchmarks on the web that show how even basic web browsing is like kicking dead whales down the beach on it (RPi 3 that is). The SoC is made by Allwinner, a company that repeatedly violated GNU GPL. The GPU required binary drivers up until recently and I'm still not sure how good the free software Lima graphics driver is. It's possible that 3D acceleration could suffer, which would be devastating considering how weak Mali-400 with binary drivers already is. The notice about how dead pixels are "nothing unusual on LCD screens" on their store page is really discouraging too. In general, I don't recommend trusting hardware that brands itself as "open source," check out ryf.fsf.org and h-node.org instead. Further reading on ARM SBCs: https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/single-board-computers Pinebook is technically not an SBC, but it uses the same components.
