GrapheneOS

Finally there is a new private and secure mobile OS after all the CopperheadOS drama. Which is a shame since even Snowden was using it. Now the developer of that project is coming with a new one called GrapheneOS.

Looks a bit too alpha for me, but I look forward to switching from Lineage once it becomes more mature.

It mentions but doesn't list supported devices.

Let's hope it works out

No reason to think it won't.

Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL
It lists them at the bottom of the page under "stable channel" and "beta channel".

Thanks. It doesn't show without JS. That's why I missed.
Not devices that I have unfortunately.

We don't really have any kind of secure android implementation after several attempts and years of effort so actually there is plenty of reason to think it won't work out.

What happened to copperheadOS?
Meddler · 2019-04-09 23:08
Looks interesting. Has anyone actually tried it? How'd it go?

I myself could jump ship to this OS. It looks neat!

Copperhead had some good defaults like Silence as the SMS app and F-droid shipped by default. It still used Chrome when it should use Firefox though.

I remember reading the reason they didnt use firefox was due to security issues that came from gecko browser engine and if firefox switched to new servo engine they would consider including it.

Why not Bromite then?

A 1 1/2 year old project with 2 contributors. That's a good idea.

Firefox Klar would be a good option in that case (I think it uses Blink). Check the required permissions: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mozilla.klar/
Cf. https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid/
As a side note, Tor Browser is available in F-Droid as well, you just have to enable the Guardian repo in the settings.

It should switch from Signal to a Matrix client like miniVector as well. The Librem phone is going to use Matrix too.

This is the deal-breaker for me, only support for Google devices. Mostly just because I don't own a Google device since the glory that was the Nexus 5.
From a development standpoint it makes complete sense, but from my perspective it's just annoying.
To use it I have to go and buy a device from the very people I'm trying to avoid.
The reason I probably won't just buy a Pixel when my phone finally dies? Because they're removing the headphone jack, they're overpriced, their product's design is soykaf and most of all because I'm giving money Google - the big brother of the tech world.
Don't get me wrong, GrapheneOS looks like a fine project and I'll be following along with it's development - hopefully they'll support other devices in the future.
