Nanashi No Gombe · 2019-02-20 03:31
Any lainons going to DEF CON this year?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, Rule 4 Please elaborate in your future posts as to whether you are going to DEFCON and what aspects of DEFCON you are interested in getting into and why.)
Yet Another Lainon · 2019-02-21 14:46
probably not, travel and tickets make it expensive as fuarrrk I go to a few local cons that are only a few hours away for about 20-50$
Unknown · 2019-06-01 10:56

Which team? :3
Leto Atreides I · 2019-06-15 03:40
This is a reasonable thread. Mods need to go outside or something.
See you there lains, I'll have a lainchan sticker on my badge. :)(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, Rule 6 Do not whine and cry about 8chan, lainchan.jp, "quality", "invasions", "newfags", mods, bans, or kalyx outside of /q/.)

I went once a few years ago, and the experience was exhausting.
0. hype. half of this conference is vendors and the other half is parties hosted by security companies trying to hire. after-hours is loud.
1. so. many. talks. You will never have time to see everything, and its all getting posted online anyhow, so why not stay home.
2. Ticket prices keep going up but hey, thats life so not much of a real gripe here. if you can get your workplace to pay for it, go for it.
3. the casual paranoia of being around this many..."security professionals" Seriously. you'll never touch an ATM, youll never publicly charge your phone, and you will treat every single curious acquaintance as a member of a 3-letter American security agency.
4. The conference hotel once casually, without warrant, searched every single attendees room. https://www.secjuice.com/defcon-hotel-security-fiasco/

Why wouldn't they straight up tell them to go fuarrrk themselves and go to another hotel?

Oh yeah. I've always thought that the people most deserving of being at DEFCON are precisely the ones who wouldn't go within fifty miles of it. I don't know personally, but I've kind of assumed that people who do go are either g-men doing field work, infosec hiring and vending, or plebs LARPing as hackers and imagining themselves as baccarat-playing international men of mystery.
I love mods by the way. Especially when they dom me. Spank me daddy.
Unknown · 2019-06-22 02:11
I'm gonna bug my boss to pay for me, but if i can't get it like that i'll just stay home and watch the talks.
John Doe · 2019-06-22 02:50
i'd also like to say that i think defcon and it's associated cons is the best place to learn techniques for discovering hidden users accessing your system, and it's also possible to just pick up on techniques that the three letter agencies don't want you to know about.
on the other hand it could all be a huge honeypot with a thin verneer of security though the cash only defense - remember the atm skimmer?
i digress. i suppose defending and attacking a network is the only way to build skill at remote work

Using an ATM anywhere near DEFCON would be a serious lapse in judgement. While you're at it, might as well pick up that USB drive you found on the ground and plug it in to your work computer, wcgw?
Being there at all is kind of a bad idea for the paranoid now that facial recognition is mature. You know for a fact there are several orgs just making an exhaustive list of everyone who goes near and cross-checking them with ML or w/e at this point in the game.
Ender · 2019-06-22 05:50
No. I despise social activities.

i was thinking of going because I am now a security intern and defcon is kinda like black hat-lite
if i have no fuarrrko soykaf going on, is it still a bad idea to go?
Tyrell Wellick · 2019-06-25 21:12
Just got my room booked. In my opinion all the good action at DC is in the hands-on at the villages or the networking you do. Parties are really good for this. All the talks and whatnot you can just get on YouTube later.

Hope the word enhancers don't change the end of the url, in case it does, it's just the f word with an o at the end.

I'm not the person you're replying to, but what does this have to do with going to defcon?
Are you saying you have opsec concerns with going to defcon?
>defcon is kinda like black hat-lite
Don't know many people that go to dc to actually attend it to be honest.
Lots of us just use it as a yearly meetup and tinker fest.
I just buy the shirt, get the badge, fuarrrk with villages for about a day, and end up just hanging out with my friends I don't get to see often for the rest of the time.

Idk, your take is kinda cringe. If you just work in security and don't take yourself too seriously, it's pretty fun. Vendor parties == fuarrrk the vendors, free socializing and a place to hang out. Paranoia == that's all you dude. Just don't carry sensitive info and bring a new phone. Sure, you meet some weird people, but if you don't like them you can just walk away lol.

DEFCON isn't supposed to be some insanely l33t hax0r con or something. It's just a fun convention for people who like hacking to come hang out and share fun/interesting hacks. It's never been anything more than that, I think you're letting it's reputation proceed it.

I think these two are the most level-headed/experienced opinions here. This will be my fifth DEFCON and I have to say - I had extremely high expectations my first year, but DC is honestly just a place to hang out, network, and tinker around with fun stuff.
On Blackhat: that is 110% an industry convention. It exists solely to sell your company products and network you with vendors. There is very little "hacker spirit" at Blackhat.
