Private Alternatives to Common Tools

Trinity · 2019-02-14 07:31
Wanted to make a thread for privacy alternatives for common tools such as file transfer, image hosting, paste services, git services etc that you found and use. Note that they have to qualify as being open source as well for obvious reasons.

>>7137 OP here. I can suggest using PrivateBin (https://privatebin.net/) or ZeroBin (https://zerobin.net/) for paste services. The latter even has an onion for those of you who are interested. I generally tend to use something like magic wormhole (https://github.com/warner/magic-wormhole) for file transfer.

>>7137 >>7138 I wish there was a paste service like zerobin that didn't require js. I recall finding one a while back that would still let you use ther service without js but wouldn't encrypt pastes for you. I think this is smarter because then you can use pgp or something else to encrypt text locally and then paste the output to the site. Then you don't need to trust the site to not be backdoored or have old/improperly configured encryption. >>7137 I am a huge proponent of running your own services. For file transfers torrent is king but something like XDCC or just a plain s/ftp server maybe with a http file share would work too. for image hosting you could use https://github.com/hydrusnetwork/hydrus to host a booru or https://github.com/Vim-cn/elimage to make an image paste service. you can even run your own paste service: https://github.com/dyne/binnit for git you can make your own git server with a web frontend a la github and the like using https://git.2f30.org/stagit/log.html I do not trust other peoples computers, any service you don't run yourself is by it's very nature not private, even if it's encrypted there is no way to know if it is configured correctly or not backdoored. Run the services yourself and you can know there isn't any fooling around

>>7137 For local transfer netcat. For internet transfer netcat over Tor. As a search engine host your own local searx instance with results over Tor, usually would need to press two times the search button for results to be shown.

>>7149 netcat over i2p is also an option.
