Avoiding the 14 eyes

Bobby Newmark · 2019-01-16 10:42
Hey Lain, I could use some help, I am looking to make a privacy-focused service and am hoping to find a reliable place to host dedicated servers and a website outside of the jurisdiction of the 14 eyes (and similarly South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India, Israel, Japan, and the British Overseas Territories.) The problem is that I have been having a hard time finding anywhere reputable or well-reviewed unfortunately. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Why not just start up a tor server?

Don't OP. If you want to make a privacy-focused service make sure you have physical access to the servers. If you ask this I bet you will not have access to the servers, so why using your future service if anyone can achieve the same level of privacy by buying a VPS? Make sure your service is free, else it gonna be bad as alternatives are cheaper (buying a VPS in the same country with cryptocurrencies like monero)

Whatever you do, use a greek domain name.

>>6912 >Make sure your service is free What a deranged fuark! Granted i'd be the first to offer you some gratis service, especially when it's mostly computers doing the work, but 'make sure'?! Didn't you get enough free soykaf from Abc/F*Book? Re subject matter - it'd perhaps be more shrewd to find a reliable hosting provider in just not the most fuarked up country, rather than searching for safe haven of your dream.

>>7352 At first I thought he meant it should be made of freely licensed parts (to which I would have added: open source), but yeah, the price isn't the point. It's not only perfectly reasonable to charge for the service, but it's better (given vigilant customers that care about privacy) because you'd have an incentive to maintain the integrity of the service (sadly, not many people customers care, given that they still pay for and use services that have lost their integrity, so the current stage is still that of education, where you teach a few acquaintences of the need and ease of maintaining privacy, security,, and they do the same, making the rate of public education exponential)

From my experience, the location is not that important if your host is complicit with what you are doing. For instance, Anon-IB was hosted in the Netherlands and Maxided had their physical servers in the NL as well. McColo was an US company. Anyway, any preferred locations? Be aware that the problem with picking a hosting company from a third-world country is that internet access is not cheap. A $75 100Mbps link in the USA would cost $700 in a place like Seychelles. >>7348 Probably because a certain imageboard that is highly illegal uses the .gr TLD and it still hasn't been taken down.

>>7384 I don’t know about the illegal one, just that Greece does not publish the names of domain name owners. Literally someone has to get a warrant on the Greek government in order to seize information regarding the owner of the domain name. Although domain names aren’t everything, it’s definitely the most privacy oriented TLD.

Does Sealand still host a data haven??
Agent Richard Gill · 2019-03-17 14:33
> I am looking to make a privacy-focused service Then you'll want to research "Passive Radar" and "CELLDAR" then realize you have no privacy and can offer none to anyone else.
Yet Another Lainon · 2019-03-18 04:22
>>6884 I don't think you've thought out your threat model very well.
Ein · 2019-03-23 15:01
Do NOT buy hosting for your service, get physical access. Get an RPi to start, it's not too strong, but it's enough.
