What's the best way to encrypt your external harddrive, so that it's still more or less convenient for you to use it?
Turner · 2018-06-25 10:56
LUKS is pretty straightforward. Alternatively you can use TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt.
Dujour · 2018-06-25 11:07
LUKS if you're on Linux. VeraCrypt if you are a pathetic windows pleb

LUKS is probably a little better but i like the speed that VeraCrypt provides. Speed of usage, and not necessarily operation.

I don't want to encrypt and external hard drive, but just a local folder.
Basically I just want a local folder to be password protected.
How would I do this?
Shell or GUI both are fine.

Is "chown -R root:root /folder/" sufficient? If not then VeraCrypt.

chown isn't encryption. It's changing the permissions.
if on BSD crypt/enigma seems to be the simplest way

Changing the permissions is password protecting a folder in the traditional sense. If you want encryption and real security, create an encrypted container and mount it.

Use tar to make an archive, then gpg -c that?

https://github.com/dyne/Tomb is the easiest I believe. I've also used encfs before and it worked well. This link has a lot of info on encryption methods:
