Want to know

Hey /sec/ How can I get into Security? What are the prerequisites? What should I do first? pic unrelated
The Phantom Phreak · 2018-03-14 11:32
What kind of security are you looking for? Do you want to secure your own computer, or do you want to get a job in securing others' computers? Are you securing systems from attacks over the network, or physically securing something from keyloggers, etc.? You can't jump into everything all at once. I recommend that you look into securing your own computer at first.

If you're a minor, because let's be honest, we can't keep them out, try Cyberpatriot next year. MIT puts all its courses out for free, use their website. Same for Stanford. Also, buy a book on a cert like the A+ or something.
Hacker · 2018-03-17 22:49
Well, what do you want to do? You could try your hand at some CTF's: http://captf.com/practice-ctf "Security" is too broad of a term, narrow down what exactly you think is cool and learn how to go about that.

>>4152 If you mean pentesting I would suggest: -CTFs -crack mes -online services like pentesterlab -mentorship from another hacker -make a hacking tool and promote it on github -hacking conferences -local defcon group -Get OSCP cert Don't bother with compTIA certs. If you have a more specific interest, tell us about it and I will fill you in.

No one else who can't decide where to specialize ? Malware are cool, reversing is cool, pentesting is cool, cracking is cool... how the fuarrrk can you do it all, if even possible at all ? Assuming one already got most of the prerequisite done...

>>5673 take some intro courses, I use to recommend Cybrary.it, but know I honestly recommend samsclass.info more he's starting a new semester now.

Get root access to NSA servers.
Technician · 2018-08-27 09:54
I feel like you should have done a lot more research before asking that question here.
Ender · 2018-08-27 22:45
Assuming you mean professionally: of course you have to know your soykaf, but you also have to know someone to really get in. But I guess that applies to all jobs.

>>5684 If you want to be "a hacker" in a general sense, just..hack away. There isn't a clear cut path unless you're being mentored by someone who has already found your path. For example, if you want to learn programming you will always start at variables, loops, if cases, functions, etc.. That path doesn't exist for hacking in general, because hacking is a popular term for a wide range of abilities. You can start at crypto, security (as in securing a machine), offense...it's too wide a net. My recommendation is browse around /sec/, do your research, you will find a lot of material and probably get lost in it then give up after a few months. If you do, that's life, if you don't, you'll find your path some day. I know it's the most effective method, but i can't think of anything more straightfoward. I could recommend you to pirate some courses, but will you give a soykaf about 2 hour lectures about ethics? And then enumeration? You don't even know what enumeration will be used for, it will be a boring ass course. So do your research, doing that you will find some advanced material that will motivate you to continue. There are a billion books, courses and video classes on this board, just go ahead with the mindset that you will likely have to sit through a lot of stuff you don't care about before you find what you care for.
