should i apply for NSA, Interpol, etc. jobs?
why ? · 2025-09-10 10:22
i am 19yo anon, worked in big-tech companies as a rust developer, now studying in uni.
for a long time i mastered my skills in osint/csint, internet stalking, i do have experience in red-team web/networks/systems security.
before summer, my (now) ex acknowledged that i hacked into her accounts, hacked into cctv, hacked into dorm's database, that i had dossiers on everyone i've ever met and more.
after that i contacted a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with schizotypal disorder.
i don't want to hurt anyone, but i want to apply my skills for good. ideal option for me would've been part-time detective or something similar. any advice?

Funny.
Why the fuarrrk are you asking what to do of your life on an imageboard ? And from what you wrote, you probably already hurt someone, so just embrace it and go full evil mode.

full evil mode would most probably end up with me being in jail or smth.
looking from the other side, working as a private investigator could give me opportunities, knowledge, and most importantly some money for my capital.
Nanashi No Gombe · 2025-09-10 11:32
Sure, give it a shot. They might just need another janitor.
But the real cool hackerman or james bond jobs that you see in movies, as I understand, they call you.
And if you're really that desperate then use all your skills on doing some major e-bucks heist and then you get to negotiate a deal with the fed boys to become an indentured codermonkey for the next 20 years or so.

not sure being a lapdog for authoritarians would better the world but you do you

once you do bad things, there is no back. even if you manage to apply your skill for good. do whatever you want.

I can partially agree with it, all summer I stopped myself from further stalking, knowing it's not really worth it
On the other side, i applied my knowledge of systems programming and developed a process-specific proxy mechanism, the customer paid really good and i was happy for a moment
I think making money is the thing that fulfills me every time i get results, more than anything else

if you have serious reversing and hacking skills you should consider applying somewhere like trail of bits, codex, or similar. they pay better than fed jobs and have more flexibility, as well as less larp. if your thing is OSINT then you should look into private investigation work instead. not sure whos hiring for purely redteam but thats also something you should look into. basically, pick a domain and start networking / applying for jobs in it.

>they call you
it's no secret that they recruit off CTF leaderboards. if you want that phone call then do as many of those seem reputed and challenging.

Check out what wikileaks, project veritas, antiwar.com are putting out. Exposing the government is the actual, true journalism.
There are so many corrupt politicians, corporate lobbyists, law enforcers, grantmaking foundations, shady investment bankers etc. You'll have plenty of work as a real journalist.

What does your illness have to do with anything? If anything, a schizo-adjacent person is the last thing they need, because they need psychologically and emotionally stable people for their operations. I doubt you will get far with your illness. Assuming you're not LARPing, which I doubt, because you hit almost every red flag for a LARP in your post, but for the thin chance you're honest, then how do you want to work with your illness? I'm diagnosed with schizophrenic psychosis and I have been hospitalized multiple times, had to go to rehab, and still am not able to work a normal job due to the stress and the inconsitencies of my illness. I know multiple people with schizotypal disorder in real life and they're total trainwrecks and far from being able to work a normal job. Those people don't want to work for the CIA or Interpol, they want to live a normal life with a normal office job. You've got to consider that the jobs at the originisations are extremely demanding jobs in nature and if you actually suffer from this illness you said, you can be lucky if you can work part-time some ordinary job, and that's already very demanding for people with such a disorder like you supposedly have. Hell, even working in IT at all is already a very demanding domain. if you have want to make the world a better place you should become a gardening or flower shop assistant. Working in a flower shop makes the people that buy there happier people, unlike working for the NSA/Interpol which only aids just mass surveillance and the expansion of the police state. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this to say that you have no skills with computers or that, all I'm saying is that you cannot expect to work such an extremely demanding job with your disability.

What I really want is adrenaline, money, interesting cases, technologies that are not accessible to a mere human (e.g. russian digital surveillance, israeli technologies, pegasus, etc.)
I don't care about corruption, exposing government, etc.
I'm not trying to save the world or bring truth to it
My own wealth is the only thing that matters for me

Little correction: I wrote
>then how do you want to work with your illness?
But I meant "Why would you want to work with your illness in such a demanding job?". Obviously you should work if you can and shouldn't use your illness as an excuse, but of course that's up to you.

Oh - if you just want power and don't mind evil, you'll fit right in. Join CIA, help Palantir cage us all and our children in a perpetual nightmare surveillance police cyberstate. Stalk assassination targets, journalists, non-israeli congressmen. Build AI systems that would fully control our existence. You'll get guaranteed pay, retirement benefits, you'll get to play with interesting toys - help kill people, control them, change them.
Of course, from a moral perspective, this is the worst choice you could possibly make. You'll have to completely drop any false pretense of "applying your skills for good". Building a tyrannical system will hurt the absolute maximum amount of people. The State is pure violence, applied systematically. You'd be doing far less harm to society if you personally stabbed a hundred people to death. I'll just ask you to not be a hypocrite. Please don't lie to yourself (or people around you) about what you're doing.

there was a really good investigative journalism resource someone posted on /r/ a while back. you should look at https://exposingtheinvisible.org/ and https://gijn.org/ . truthout and propublica are good too, albeit a little more partisan.

>a schizo-adjacent person is the last thing they need,
you'd be surprised, or not surprised maybe. the CIA is filled with LARPy paranoiacs. what they're looking for is life stability, but if you are a good american with a psychotic hatred of china, for instance, you'd fit right in.
>I've been hospitalized multiple times
oh, I'm sorry to hear lain. i didn't realize you were talking about actually life-detrimental cluster A personality disorder and not the way larpers on x, the everything app refer to people as schizo. I am also not being paid by the federal government with some adjacency to a coverup of its baby raping operations due to my cognitive differences, which is like kicking dead whales down the beach because i have a few certifications under my belt and experience in the industry - I work commission as an independent consultant.

feds don't pay well compared to the rest of industry, thats why they hire patriots.

you will be sorely disappointed at what three letter agencies are doing and how they are catching people. most of the interesting stuff is contracted out anyways.
anyways, you seem to have changed your goalposts, seeing as the OP states that they want to apply their skills for good. i think the unfortunate reality is that what's interesting and what's profitable are often very different.
>>27078
>guaranteed pay, retirement benefits
true
>build evil scifi surveillance apparati merely because they make toys that are interesting
unfortunately this is not remotely the situation you would be walking in to. what you might instead find is a circus of nepo babies who laud incompetence and engage in underhanded office politics while pretending to work. you will work with PTSD-riddled obsessives who will flip their soykaf at you for the suggestion that manually filling out a spreadsheet is wasteful, useless meetings for the sake of "military discipline" and similar wastes of your time and my own.
we all know black hat is what you really want to do anyway. then you can be the interesting problem

Isn't that like 99% of white collar work?

I should also mention you will be at least 10 years, probably closer to 20 years younger than everyone else. unless you are with a previously-mentioned contractor, you will find the primary difficulty of your job is fitting in with the ageing millenials who work there, observing the same sleep/wake/lunch cycles of them (for the aforementioned meetings), talking like one of them including presentations of basic, banal security information in a format they will understand and take seriously. this is how they run the world. not through dystopian technology, but through selfish incompetence.
Sabo Engle · 2025-09-11 20:28

it is, but there are characteristics of work in the National Security apparatus that make the otherwise boring desk soykaf all the more insufferable. besides, OP doesn't want to do 99% of white collar work, OP wants to do something interesting and meaningful that fulfills their hacker fantasies. you will not achieve this at a 3 letter agency, you will also not achieve this at palantir. at least not at first, it may take a decade of wading through corporate soykaf to actually be on the cutting edge of what they're looking for.
or you can find a contractor that's immediately concerned with the hard problems, and apply to them instead. IOActive comes to mind.

If you have ever had such thoughts, if you don't already have inherent feeling what is acceptable and what is not, you are already a traitor of all your co-citizens, friends and relatives. Do what you want. No matter what you do, you will pay for that. Everyone will pay for everything done and not done. Let's see if traitor's payoff makes you happy...

You don't understand, he's an mentally ill psychopathic (like the Death note character!!) 1337 hacker who couldn't care less about normal person NPC things like morality! If you don't arrive at this level of enlightenment like he did, you're basically sheeple just waiting to be pushed around by the big NSA super-hackers like him.

not schizophrenia? good. also, bad, as you may be threatened to get you disorder upgraded to full-blown cant-werk-anywhere schizophrenic "as a part of the deal" and throw you away in a year or two
