Monero

Morpheus · 2024-03-26 22:59
Can we get a Monero thread going? I'm just getting into it finally, and I think I want to try buying some anonymously. Turns out it's not as simple as I thought. WHAT IS MONERO? Monero (XMR) is a private, decentralized cryptocurrency whose transactions cannot be traced. The anonymization aspect is what makes it one of the top coins - it offers something none of the others do. It also uses the Randomx algorithm for mining, which is geared toward CPUs instead of Bitcoin's algorithm which can be gamed by a few rich users with hundreds of GPUs geared toward mining, or ASICs. https://www.getmonero.org/ How to get started You can simply download the GUI wallet from Monero's official website. You can make as many wallets as you want, for free. It's not hard but I'll include a short tutorial video as well. https://www.getmonero.org/downloads/ https://youtu.be/qPNxca_KMww Where can I buy Monero? That's why I'm here. You can easily buy Monero from sellers with things like Cashapp or bank transfers, but I want to go the completely anonymous route, if possible. The most prominent XMR trading site that's recommended by the Monero website is Localmonero. But there are many other sites as well as P2P options https://localmonero.co/ How to mine XMR The most common, easy way to mine Monero is to use xmrig. It's a cross platform application that runs in the command line. You simply choose a pool, enter that and your wallet address in the config file, and start mining. You can exit whenever you need to as well. It's not too hard to set up, but I'll include another tutorial as well. You can have as many PCs mining to your wallet address as you want. Although I will say that you either need a super powerful CPU or a ton of computers working simultaneously to actually make any money https://xmrig.com/ https://youtu.be/lu0k59y5z3E

If you want to buy XMR without having to prove your identity, KYCnot dot me has a list of places to buy (including localmonero like OP said) you're welcome
Junichi Fujiwara · 2024-03-26 23:09
>>23686 Yes, and this brings me to the reason for creating this thread... Has anyone tried buying with cash by mail? The sellers on Localmonero are selling it at pretty much 1:1 value, which is great, but I have basically zero recourse if they decide not to pay me back, or my mail gets lost or something. The other option I was thinking of was using prepaid giftcards. But even the most charitable seller wants a 25% cut. And what the hell does pic related mean? "Must have card and receipt with you in hands." It's just a general USA seller, I'm not planning on meeting in person. Why do they want the receipt anyways? That kind of fuarrrks things up for me. It basically gives away where I live as well as the date and time I went in to buy the card.
Nemissa · 2024-03-27 00:44
>>23687 Prepaid cards can be a nightmare, i wouldnt recommend it If youre in a country where you can use cash and there are reputable cash-by-mail traders, then it cant be beat. Very convenient and effective. You do have recourse if it werent sent because your coins will be in escrow until you receive it, and you can record yourself opening the package. If it's a reputable seller then it is very unlikely that they will try to scam you anyway
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2024-03-27 02:25
>>23688 Have you personally used cash by mail? I'm just nervous to try it. Do you just mail it in like any other letter? I obviously wouldn't put in a return address.
Zero Cool · 2024-03-27 18:49
>>23687 Yeah that's the price of real anonymity Either you take risk or you pay a "fee". I did cash by mail a few times, never had any problem myself, but I heard people losing money this way. Most trusted seller will not scam you, they know it's best for them as a lot of small criminals (darknet sellers etc) need them and will come back to them. I'm pretty sure most of the time it's postal services employees stealing the money as it's not legal to send cash by mail in many countries and they know no one will complain. Can't recommend prepaid either as I never tried myself. Try cash by mail with small amounts if you can handle losing that money. Or go buy some BTC with your real name, send them to a new wallet not linked to your identity and swap them for XMR. (I'm >>23686 not >>23687 & >>23688)
藤原純一 · 2024-03-28 12:43
>>23691 >Or go buy some BTC with your real name, send them to a new wallet not linked to your identity and swap them for XMR. This does nothing, as sending Bitcoin from a non-anonymous wallet to a new one will immediately connect the two. In general, if you trust Monero's anonymity guarantees (which do not necessarily hold up), it does not matter how you buy it, as the rx and tx transactions shouldn't be connectable to each other. So, in theory, it *should* be safe to buy Monero directly in your own name, as long as you send it to a self hosted wallet. If you do not trust Monero's protocol to be fully secure, you could first buy Bitcoin in whatever way that's convenient to you, use Bitcoin mixers to launder it and then swap the newly anonymous Bitcoin to Monero.
Just another Random Lainon · 2024-03-28 16:45
God damn it, guys. I'm at a standstill again. So I can either spend $100 on a gift card and lose $25 from it, mail in $50 and worry the whole time about if it's going to get there (I also haven't mailed anything in years), or I can just buy some with Paypal in my real name which also makes me nervous. The gift card option sound the most secure but 25% is STEEP. I have the perfect thing I want to buy with it too. I want to buy a month on Hexload, but they only take Bitcoin and Litecoin. I'll have to figure out the best way to swap some XMR for BTC without getting scammed as well. I definitely want XMR, and this seems like a good way to get BTC anonymously anyway. But God damn. I'm procrastinating because I'm not keen on potentially losing money.
Hagbard Celine · 2024-03-28 22:20
>>23692 >This does nothing, as sending Bitcoin from a non-anonymous wallet to a new one will immediately connect the two. Plausible deniability If you swap your BTC to XMR from your wallet linked to your legal exchange where you provided KYC data, it can be traced back to you. If you use an automated process to swap and delays are not random, authorities can see, for example, $20 of BTC coming in and $20 of XMR going out. Or maybe the mixer is misconfigured, idk. Or you swap from a human seller who kept logs in customers.txt, etc. But if you send to a second wallet beforehand, you can say you gave your BTC to a random person on the Internet.
Cowboy · 2024-03-28 23:33
>>23695 you have better options. but if you really can't see them and are feeling so lazy, just >buy with paypal -> buy xmr on a no kyc exchange -> buy bitcoin to a clean wallet accessed via tor "but it still shows that i bought n amount of bitcoin" if you're feeling that paranoid, buy lesser amounts over time continuously adding up over the amount you need, or buy more than you need. but I promise you nobody is looking that hard for it. P.S. paypal is awful and screws people over on bitcoin withdrawals so don't actually use them if you can help it

I genuinely don't see what I'm missing here, either the gift card, cash by mail, or Paypal options seem the most legitimate. >>23701 >sure. you're using a VPN to ask about this stuff, right? Yes, but I can already tell there's no way I'm going to find an email that Cashapp will let me use. It sends you a confirmation code, so it makes you log into your email, check the code, and then enter it, only for the app to tell you the email can't be used. That is so fuarrrking infuriating. What is the reason for that?

I'm going to try creating some new emails right now, but I can already tell you they are probably going to force me to enter a phone number, which I will not do.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2024-03-29 02:01
Yep, just as I thought. It's genuinely difficult to do anything anonymously these days. Unskippable phone verification (AOL and Yahoo), Proton email didn't work anyway. I think I might have to take the 25% cut and then start looking for residential proxies for next time (if it even is my VPN)

I bit the bullet and bought XMR via gift card for a 25% surcharge. I'm not thrilled about that but I'm happy to finally get started with this. Now I'm looking into the best way to buy some BTC with it. I'm thinking of going with the Wasabi wallet, the privacy features look nice but they may be overkill, hopefully there's not any downsides. Electrum wallet looks good too. Does there exist wallets that hold multiple different coins?

Is the Wasabi wallet worth it? The wallet tumbling seems like a nice feature, but I read somewhere on the site that they take a small percentage each time. I'm a little bit confused on the frequency and actual percentage they take. If I let BTC sit in a Wasabi wallet, does that mean that every day I'm going to lose a small percentage of my coins?

started using xmr to pay for my vpn subscription. i guess that gives me some peace of mind for privacys sake, and it also helps the monero economy. granted, they can still see what ip im connecting with in the first place, but its cool that they accept crypto. also bought a few months' subscription to a debrid site, but that was with BTC. i like using crypto, its very straightforward and feels secure. i have the data synced on my system and i especially like that i dont have to sign in to any globohomo services on javascript-infected web pages with all of my personal info to get to it. the only problem is that i have basically no recourse for vendors/traders if they dont follow through on their end, plus im always afraid im going to mistype an address or press a wrong button and lose my funds

so many of you are taking such convoluted measures to acquire XMR. Use a KYC exchange to buy BTC, deposit this bitcoin to a site such as TradeOgre. Swap it for XMR and move it to your XMR wallet. So, so far if there was an investigation on your account, feds would see: >person bought BTC >person sent BTC to TradeOgre >from here, they need proof that you have an account associated with TradeOgre to confirm that you did swap for XMR. >person sent XMR to wallet From here, they don't really have any leads, sure, they have the XMR wallet you sent your coins to, but if you just move your coins to a different wallet from there you've already covered your tracks pretty well. Local monero is decent if you want to get ripped off.

>>23983 I think the main thing is that if you are traceably the sole provider of funds to an account even one or two steps removed, on BTC thats discernable and possibly fishy looking. Technically you could do sufficient transactions to obscure what is going on, and ultimately get fairly deniable wallets, but it takes time, and significantly, transaction fees. If you can just avoid the problem, as systems like monero supposedly do, I think thats a better option.

I was originally going to ask before coming to this thread and seeing the news how bad/private it would be to buy XMR directly with Paypal before sending it to another wallet(s)? I still have my user and password, so I'm considering doing this now, but seeing the way non-KYC crypto is being treated by the US I wonder if it would put me on some watchlist. To my understanding, with XMR, you can still monitor what transactions are being made to what address, just not the amounts, right? So if I simply bought some XMR with my real identity then transferred all of the funds to a new wallet, it would be pretty obvious what I just did, right? So would be preferable to send bits of the funds to several different wallets? Should I do this before Localmonero shuts down? Seems like it's going to be my last chance for a while. Then at least I can use Bisq or some P2P service in the future if I want BTC or LTC. I wonder if Wasabi will still work if I simply change my VPN address to the EU? My funds still show in the wallet, everything appears the same. Going to try and send them to an Electrum wallet, I guess. Bitcoins can be accepted as a payment for goods and services or bought directly from an exchange with a bank account. They therefore function as pecuniary resources and are used as a medium of exchange and a means of payment."[38] It sounds like in the USA at least, depending on the cryptocurrency, it may not be money but property. So using it would be the same as buying things with pokemon cards or foreskins instead of government sanctioned cash. The thing that complicates crypto is that banks have started accepting it as currency, which puts it into a category of legal money only if you 1. Associate your identity with it 2. use a reputable bank with good record keeping, which goes against the whole point of recordless transactions. Americans have no rights to privacy.

Support open sourced and security focused technology and companies that have better privacy respecting to outcompete the worst of the worst, not that there is any guarantees but it still weakens bigger companies surveillance abilities by cutting into their profits if anyone competes against them enough. Most companies fail and a lot of tech is vaporware but at least it doesnt go to nothing but wasting electricity and internet bandwidth like crypto does.
H.R. Giger · 2024-11-23 14:28
>>25270 The answer is very simple: people want to get more money, not spend it. What you describe is spending money, >Most companies fail and a lot of tech is vaporware, as you said. People do the very same with traditional currencies too, that's why quick and high peaks and lows can happen to them despite no such quick peaks or lows in the productivity of the country. I understand your feelings too, btw, i would really like it if crypto would be more stable and therefore a more useful and widespread currency.

>>25272 >People do the very same with traditional currencies too, that's why quick and high peaks and lows can happen to them despite no such quick peaks or lows in the productivity of the country. The difference is that central banks can create as much dollars/euros/yen as they want. The whole point of using precious metals and crypto as currency and store of wealth is that they can't be arbitrarily inflated by political authorities. >>23991 >Americans have no rights to privacy. Financial privacy doesn't exist because of the income tax. The government need to track all your transactions to figure out how much tax you owe. And when you try to hide that information it's "money laundering".

reminder to mine XMR to defend the network from the recent threat actor who's attempting to reach 51%. every hash matters. start mining today, use p2pool or any other pool as long as you're not mining for the threat actor.
Boris Grishenko · 2025-08-10 07:12
>>26857 Does the attack have potential for serious long term damage to the project? As a normal user could I just ignore the 51% thing and use haveno and xmrbazaar like normal?
353cloud · 2025-08-13 08:51
>>26862 big issue with the attack is the FUD that is spreading, as paid bots and the guy behind this aggression, are trying to pass the narrative that pubic really did succeed in this 51% attack but chose not to dominate the network (as they previously said they would do) out of good will. This caused severe drop in price. Lower price means lower rewards for miners, i.e. lower overall hashrate, i.e.much easier to do a real 51% against the network and censor transaction, do doublespends, and so on. But as of now, it is still fairly safe to use.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2025-08-14 20:54
>>26881 so wait, they didn't actually 51%? I heard the other day they did. however I also heard that due to the nature of newbics structure / mining technique it doesn't deanonymise people, as their ostensibly superior network would then have to be exploited too. since most of monero's value comes from it being private I can't see this hurting it seriously.. I'm honestly optimistic it will correct upwards again later in the cycle as ethereum users consolidate their gains. https://qubic.org/blog-detail/historic-takeover-complete-qubic-miners-now-secure-monero-network
353cloud · 2025-08-15 10:15
>>26885 They quite openly stated before that if they ever hit 51% they'd start rejecting all blocks mined by other pools thereby forcing miners to join them or make no profit at all. that didn't happen. they're now trying to claim that it didn't happen, not because they failed to reach 51%, but because they were trying to protect monero all along (and yes, there are people retarded enough who fall for this soykaf). The re-orgs they did, don't prove soykaf. you don't need anywhere close 51% of hashrate to do a few reorgs here and there. But it succeeded in convincing the cryptobro "experts" and news sites. In the previous 24 hours period of their attack, their blockshare has been estimated by reliable sources to be around 36% at most. Also remember that due to selfish mining they're getting more blocks, so their hashrate share should be even lower than that. Yesterday a large mining farm (400MH's) even switched to qubic and that still wasn't enough to get them to 51% (but it did get them to 40%) essentially proving that they were making soykaf up. But that was enough to generate FUD. Lower price due to FUD -> mining xmr is unprofitable -> less honest miners -> pubic's hashrate share increase -> easier for them to generate FUD -> lower price -> mining xmr is unprofitable so their biggest victory so far has been in controlling the narrative.

>>26857 Came here to say this
Hacker · 2025-08-16 11:41
>>26857 Not to be defeatist, but considering how much the threat actor already has, it's clear that it's some kind of government agency or big corporation, or both. If they have the raw processing power to get say 20% of the hashrate, and considering such agencies have unlimited resources, why even bother then? The solution has to be implemented in the Monero code and not fought as a battle of who has the most resources, because it's clear that some random cypherpunks certainly don't have enough resources compared to a government agency. If there is no way to fight this by implementing some code, XMR is done for, maybe you're able to push it back a few weeks, but it's an uphill battle realistically.
BloodCat · 2025-08-18 14:52
>>26900 Yeah. The network would be secure if the price would be hovering around 5x or more than what it is currently at this point, which would be the optimal solution. But until then there may have to be some compromise on consensus mechanism with PoS element or something.

Tequila · 2025-09-11 14:39
>>26900 >it must be the big other its not, its a public mining pool that rewards people with their own currency (qubic) in addition to monero giving marginally better returns for miners to join their pool instead of a different one. they also claim to use an algorithm called "useful proof of work" that mines more efficiently than the proof-of-work algorithm that monero uses. https://qubic.org/pr/qubic-mines-monero https://qubic.org/pr/qubic-overtakes-monero-s-hash-rate-in-live-51-takeover-demo

353cloud · 2025-09-14 05:35

Fred Nurk · 2025-12-28 09:48
>>27588 It's not a matter of enforcement but rather promoting good practices. Usually someone on the darknet acquires and spends Monero like this: - buys bitcoin on kyc market (links his identity to bitcoins) - cashes out the coins to self custodial wallet (looks kinda sus) - swaps it for monero on decentralized market (visible on the blockchain) now he is on record swapping his bitcoin for monero linked straight to his passport but there is more - switches to tails and sends monero to vendor with feather wallet (remote monero node adds 15 prespent decoys to his transaction) - monero exchange is immediately deanonymized and linked to his passport (see previous steps) - gets busted now or in the future if he did something illegal

>>27756 > https://coinproven.com/eu-to-ban-monero-and-zcash-by-2027-what-privacy-coin-holders-need-to-know Interesting read. A few points: > Zcash derezzed in the EU Why? I was under the impression that criminals preferred to work with Monero, no? And the CEO/main developer has stated multiple that he's fine cooperating with law enforcement. I suppose there are enough criminals who use Zcash that the EU is making it a priority, but still. https://moneroinfodump.neocities.org/#ZcashBlackpill > Monero to be delisted from *EU-regulated* crypto exchanges There may be a price dip as people start panic selling/swapping for Bitcoin or something else. That's fine, it means Monero can be bought for cheap. The article explains the issue with cashing out into euros: > if you want to cash out your Monero into euros, you’ll need to move it to a non-EU exchange first. Then convert it to Bitcoin or Ethereum. Then send it to an EU-based exchange. Then sell. That’s three steps, extra fees, and more risk. It’s not impossible - but it’s not easy either. So I wager platforms such as Haveno and Bisq the like will become more utilized as time goes on, at least in the EU. Only time will tell. >>27752 You can use a different address within your wallet to receive the transaction, no? I understand having a convoluted system of hot and cold wallets if you have an excessive amount of crypto, but for smaller amounts a single wallet should be more than fine. >>23936 > but then can't they just see that i sent it to that wallet? how private exactly is the blockchain? Monero uses ring signatures and stealth addresses to obfuscate transactions. > what if i just bought some xmr on localmonero with paypal, then sent the funds to another wallet after the transaction was complete? Well at this point in time the transaction would look more like "buy some XMR on Haveno with cash, then have it be sent to a newly created receiving address in your wallet." > i don't want to "sign up" for anything, so i'm not sure how i'd get BTC in the first place, in your scenario. You could use Bisq to buy BTC with cash, or you could exchange your XMR for BTC. My contribution to the thread: You can use Gupax to (more easily) mine XMR if you have a laptop/desktop. It handles everything, including (optionally) setting up your own local Monero node. Website: https://gupax.io/ GitHub page: https://github.com/gupax-io/gupax There is also a daemon mode if you don't care for the GUI (run with --daemon flag).

While the ability for me to do this may get fuarrrked within the coming years, as long as there are regulated platforms for me to dump for USD, like Kracken, I can offer e-commerce services. I plan to have a significantly larger offering of products than based.win, along with a structure that doesn't have me just forwarding your address to a different vendor. To do this legally, I need platforms like Kracken to exist, however, and also Kracken may cut me off anyways if I am moving lots of monero onto the platform for dollars, even though my business will be 100% legal.
