Foilhead thread (Opsec and internet privacy& anonymity)
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-09-29 04:57
Welcome fellow foilheads, this thread is about discussing and sharing experiences, ways of accessing the internet.
>How do yall access the internet?
I access it thru i2p outproxies and some built by my self
> How do you change hard cash to some sweet XMR?
i have some people i know who do hand2hand
> Why even bother?
I just enjoy serving the I2P community, and care about my privacy & anonymity. I have a few nodes up and running 24/7 with highspeed connections

I feel like many people really overestimate how easy it is to crack WiFi access points.
All you need is a suitable WiFi card and a Linux machine.
Combine that with a 2.4GHz directional antenna and you can be online basically anywhere within ~1km of civilization.
Using someone else's internet connection serves a dual purpose: you can hide your internet activity by making it appear as someone else's and you don't need to pay an ISP every month.
Also, here is an idea I had recently:
One could infect a large amount of IoT devices, as they are very insecure and then use them as VPNs, rendezvous servers, seedboxes and anything else you can imagine. From what I gathered, this is already the case with so called "residential VPNs", but I think these botnets could be used for far better purposes.

I habitually use anonymisers but I'm not afraid to just go through a proxy and noscript for many sites. My main adversary is commercial surveillance rather than national signals agencies, so I'm less strict than OP seems to be.

Are there commonly-available attacks that don't require weeks of hash-cracking? My country's ISPs all have reasonably strong Wi-Fi passwords by default on routers nowadays. That said, one of my friend's dumbass neighbours still has a no-password functional wireless network that we still us..

Why do you call him a dumbass? that's some based attitude, we should all do the same

No, thanks.

I do that, but I SSL strip and Mitm attack the traffic to steal passwords :P

lmao nice.
what can I use to protect myself from that kind of attack, tho?
(tbf, it's not like I'll ever a public wifi for private stuff. you can have my reddit account.)

VPN, HTTPS everywhere addon
that oughta help, but if attacker is smarter then he would do some DNS poisoning and just fake the websites, with a self signed certificate cuz nobody is fuarrrking noticing

Will any 2.4ghz antenna work or do I need to buy a old model?

i feel bad about it

Not the lain you replied but I could recommend WPS attacks using Reaver. It nearly takes 2 hours, mostly the maximum you can get is 12 hours as far as I know.

Try Pixie Dust WPS attack before Reaver.

After trying several times, these didn't work. Any other recommendations?

I'm not sure what you mean by this exactly. An antenna, at the end of the day, is just an object that makes electromagnetic waves travel in an organized fashion. Old or new, if an antenna is not broken, it will do its job. Of course, do make sure that the antenna is indeed 2.4ghz.
Do note that you will need a WiFi adapter to make the antenna useful. Pretty much all you need from the adapter is to be compatible with your computer (have drivers) and have removable antennas. You will also need a cable to connect the antenna with the adapter.
Do keep in mind that while antennas, adapters and even combo kits are sold online, they are often intentionally crippled to comply with regulations and blah blah blah whatever other reason they have to do it.
Also, if you're the paranoid type, do note that such a purchase could be tracked, especially if made online.
In light of these reasons, I recommend buying a cheapo adapter and some cables, and then DIYing your own antenna. It's not that difficult, you could just follow a guide on the internet.
